There is a lot to unpack in Chapter 2 and 3. Denial and distraction keep us unaware and stuck in patterns that are not particularly good for us as individuals or communities. In this discussion and others, I'm mostly interested in what you think and the type of ideas that we collectively surface as a group. And a quick note that there are no bad or wrong answers here - the important thing is to share ideas and learn together. ÃÂ
Please read chapters 2 and 3 and then answer the following questions:
1. How would you define denial in your own words? ÃÂ
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Please add the following message to the button of all discussion posts
After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

@GlenM
- Denial is something that we don't want to accept it because we don't want to address the problem and ignore it for a while
2. Things that occur outside our awareness are things which could be a learned behavior.
3. I think the top three distractions are
Internet not only distracts from doing our studies and work and all it also distracts us from emotional pain
Any extra hobbies; Because they make you forget everything
Strong emotions like extreme happinesscan make you feel like your on top of the world and extreme sadness can take your concerns away from everything
@nessa104
for me internet is the biggest issue because it has many things on it and people use it for wrong purpose rather than learning something new
@GlenM
1. How would you define denial in your own words? ÃÂ
Sometimes to feel better, one denies a problem that might exist. Sometime, to feel comfortable one denies that a situation exists. Sometimes it can be good, and sometimes it can be bad.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
Things that operate outside of unconscious needs a lot of focus, learning and practice.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Social Media: It keeps one engaged with a lot of content. Droomscrolling and looking at people profiles is a distraction. Triggers and notifications keeps one distracted all the time.
Celebrity Sites: People tend to get attached with the celebrities and love following them on day to day basis. It allows people to walk and get familiarise with the lives and sometimes their dreamlife.
Video games: They are engaging and addictive. A sense of achievements after wining each level is thrilling for people.
I think it depends on person to person. Each of these can be powerful given a context. For me video games are highly distractive, as I need to concentrate fully to win and hence I don’t think anything else even for a second.
@AliveandAlive
That is true, sometimes denial can be good. And sometimes not, so yes, I fully agree! 💚
1. How would you define denial in your own words?
Denial is when we try to minimize pain and uncomfortable feelings because of past experiences in our unconscious mind. It is replacing what is real, what we don't want, what people have discouraged and told is wrong, and replacing it with what others have praised and acknowledged that it's good.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
The most important thing I learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious is that we are not aware of everything. There are things about us that we have stored away in our unconscious because they are not deemed acceptable. I really like how they showed this concept by comparing it to carrying around a bag. I also learned that learning a behavior requires us to consciously learn something, like driving the car but once mastered it moves to the unconscious side making space for other important things in the conscious mind.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Internet, accomplishments, and food are in my opinion the top three. I think that the internet is one of the most powerful. It is very easily accessible to everyone and due to marketing techniques and how we make connections becomes really addicting. It's an easy escape from reality and enables us to put off/avoid our problems. I also think that when we are living our life for something else other than ourselves, we kinda lose who we are while we are chasing a photo and likes and comments. It damages our mental health and self-esteem so it also impacts us negatively too.
Denial to me is when you don’t want to see the truth of it being wrong. Denial is a tricky thing because you don’t want to believe it but to be honest it is correct. We are not aware of everything that is happening and they can catch us off-guard but if we focus on our awareness, it won’t catch us so off-guard. Internet/social media, food, and cell phone are the top 3 distraction systems. I believe the most powerful one is the internet/social media in today’s society everything is depending on the internet from work at home jobs to memes to watch videos. We use social media to connect with the outside world.
1. How would you
define denial in your own words? ÃÂ
i think it is coping mechanism to enviromental inputs. You deny part of
yourself to find peace.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside
of awareness or the unconscious?
It is part of ourself that defines us and if neglected and not explored it can
be problematic.
3. What do you
believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most
powerful and why?
I think in different generations, different distraction systems are more seen
but most powerful of them is marriage and having a kids. Being a couple can be
distraction system from self-problems. Some couples are having kid to be
distracted from their problems.
Secondly video gaming as seen in younger generations.
Third one is being a die-hard sport fan about some team.
1-How would you define denial in your own words? ÂÂ?
Basically all people experience denial. Denial can be a good thing. When it comes to a crisis or a problem you are going through, we want to deny these things because they help us survive. Denial can also be a problem because it can prevent you from making changes. In your life, that will help you and your loved ones to overcome many crises, and denial also occurs at the societal level and is called cultural denial to deny things in our society that we do not love or find threatened, for example we tend to collective denial of the spread of sexual assault and abuse! Therefore, denial is considered to have two sides, negative and sometimes positive.
2-what is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
The most important thing I’ve learned is that we work on both the conscious and unconscious levels. The conscious mind represents a small part of our thinking, while the unconscious controls the greater part of us. We like to think we are fully aware, but a lot of what we think, feel, and do actually happens beneath the surface outside of our consciousness! I also learned that relating to others is a process that we learn consciously and eventually become unconscious!
3-What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
We find ourselves in a new era in which there are many distractions and distraction systems, including (food), (social networking sites) and (distractions without connecting to the Internet). Today, 30% of the world's population is obese. This is due to the fact that they consider food to be a drug that is difficult to resist. The reason is that most foods are designed to hit the taste buds and light up certain parts of your brain while at the same time leaving you with as little benefit as possible Money!
@GlenM
1. How would you define denial in your own words?
I would define denial as being unwilling to accept reality and choosing to believe what you want to believe.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
The most important thing that I learned about things that operate outside of awareness/the unconscious is that these things can quite possibly be a learned behavior. A learned behavior is one that an individual develops as the result of an experience(s).
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Food, social media, and Online Distractions
I would say that of the three, food is the most powerful. I have watched several shows where individuals use food as a way to distract themselves from what is happening around them, and this is a very unhealthy way to distract, especially as overeating can lead to a number of health concerns.
@magicmango26
Who would have thought, of food being an enemy? Usually in this case, people eat food to avoid the underlying emotions that they are feeling
@GlenM
1. How would you define denial in your own words? ÃÂ
- I believe denial is being stuck in the past and being unable to move on and not believing in whatever is going on because it is not the result that you want.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
- The most important thing I learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious is what happens outside our awareness is possibly a learned behavior.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
- The first is Social Media: It is a hole that leads you diving deeper and deeper and it leaves you feeling upset and unfulfilled.
- The second is food: Food is too often used as a coping mechanism that takes your mind off your problems momentarily but doesn’t solve it.
- The last is the people around you: The people around you can either bring you up or put you down.
@NoelleListens
The last one, the people around you is the most powerful because they are the ones that you depend on and can hurt you the most.
@NoelleListens
Agree with social media, it is the leading distractor of this time
@GlenM
1. How would you define denial in your own words? ÃÂ
Not willing to accept, or face reality .
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
You cannot be sure, its completely out of your control
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Food, Addictions (Smokes), and social media
Addictions are most powerful as we are not able to keep away and addictions like smoking or tobacco have been in the culture and so much accepted that they become a knee jerk reaction to many things
1. How would you define denial in your own words? Sometimes it's so hard to accept some situations that happen... For instance, some people can't accept the fact that a 'for example some close friends of their broke up'. Denying means that we can't control our feelings. It means that we are not ready to accept something and we need some time to heal.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious? I learned that when we repeat an activity a lot, it moves from our conscious memory to our unconscious memory.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Social Media, Food and acommoplishments. Sometimes we get addicted to social media. We don't really care about our real lives but we keep getting stuck in our 'social media lives. We build a fake life and we start not taking care of ourselves. It's like we are in a much different world. Many people need someone's appreciation and opinion. It's totally okay to ask for feedback but when you get addicted and you start depending on people's comments and likes then that means you are starting to live in that much different world we talked about.
@ASilentBunny
A good point with social media
