There is a lot to unpack in Chapter 2 and 3. Denial and distraction keep us unaware and stuck in patterns that are not particularly good for us as individuals or communities. In this discussion and others, I'm mostly interested in what you think and the type of ideas that we collectively surface as a group. And a quick note that there are no bad or wrong answers here - the important thing is to share ideas and learn together. ÃÂ

Please read chapters 2 and 3 and then answer the following questions:

1. How would you define denial in your own words? ÃÂ

2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?

3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?

Please add the following message to the button of all discussion posts

After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

This post is brought to you by the Leadership Development Program Team, find out more information about the program here.

1. How would you define denial in your own words?

Denial is the feeling we get when we don't want to accept anything. Perhaps ,it could be a defense mechanism to prevent us from hurting more.

2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?

I often have no control or power over these things. Sometimes it's better to accept things than just struggle with something not in my control.

3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?

3 top distraction systems for me is academic competition, social media and video games.

The most powerful is academic competition because you really get sucked in for the race but health keeps on getting neglected and every other factor as well.

1. How would you define denial in your own words?

I would define denial as when someone refuses to accept or acknowledge a truth, a problem, or something else. The key point being in that they cannot identify or admit to it unconsciously (as stated in the book) or sometimes even consciously. The person is not able to address it because they do not think it is something worth noting or because they would rather ignore it or wish it away.

2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?

I think this chapter was very interesting because I had not before considered that there is parts of me that make me who I am that I unconsciously put in "my bag" or was taught to keep out of my identity because it is not wanted. I think what is important to know is that we often are attracted to our "shadow" or the things that are subconsciously kept away and these rejected parts of us are often the source of anxiety. It is a cycle because these repressed feelings cause anxiety and then we turn to denial as a way to cope or get rid of the anxiety. This is not a good mechanism to heal as it distances ourselves away from tackling the feelings of anxiety, which should be addressed.

3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?

Social Media, Wealth, and Celebrity News are to me the biggest distraction systems in this day and age and within my age group (20s). Out of these I definitely think social media is the most powerful. It serves as a distraction from "real life" and any problems we may have there, but it also gives us a sense of autonomy over how people might view us and can be used as a self-esteem boost a lot. I used to use it a lot for this very reason. It was highly addicting and frankly exhausting to have to worry about every little thing about a picture before posting it, having anxiety posting it, and then being obsessed with the results afterwards (attention, engagement, etc.). It allowed me to edit the photos and show the world what I thought was my best life (looks/activities/social life/accomplishments), but in reality it was more damaging than it was good for my self-esteem as I relied on this so much. Moreover, seeing everyone else's posts/social media content made me feel bad about myself because I would often compare others to what I was doing, how I looked, etc. when in reality its easy to forget that everyone else is also posting the best parts of their lives and might be altering their content as well. It is high addictive, damaging, and a huge distraction to compensate for insecurities/low self-worth.

@GlenM

1. How would you define denial in your own words? ÃÂ

Denial can be something that a person is unable to accept their mistakes or doings. Agnorant towards it.

2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?

That they are certain things we don't have a control over and it's completely okay. Sometimes, having nothing in control is what is right and healthy for you. Imagine, everything is upto you. How much of a burn out it will cause?

3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?

Internet- It's not only destroying adults but kids too. Though Internet is not just destroying but helping too. The highlighted is what a negative era shows us.

Mobile Phone/electronics- Same as internet. Either playing games for hours or getting addicted. Soley losing the meaning of calls and texts for what it was invented at the first place.

Food- Not having a control over. And losing the important of right diet

@GlenM

1. How would you define denial in your own words? ÃÂ

Denial is where an individual denies to recognise or to acknowledge something that is happening or experiences.

2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?

We are still working out what operate outside of awareness and the unconscious, but it is all about what we have learned as a child and still what we are currently learning today.

3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?

(1) Food

(2) Social media – Think social media is the most powerful distraction system because it can control who you are, through fashion adverts, celebrities, etc. It makes you want to be like other people rather than your own individual.

(3) Family/friends/others around you

@GlenM 1. How would you define denial in your own words?

Disagreeing or not willing to accept something.

2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?

Relating to others is also a process we learn consciously that eventually becomes unconscious.

3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?

Food, Online distractions, and Social Media

Social Media is the most powerful. Even though we try to make something out of it, such as reconnecting with a friend, growing a channel, or using it for productivity, it takes us back to the square where it likes us to be. I think they are the most powerful because they know everything about us and as it is custom designed for us, it becomes harder to disconnect.

@GlenM

1. How would you define denial in your own words?

Trying to convince yourself of something that otherwise isn't true

2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?

I think the most important things I learned about things that operate outside of our unconscious is that they can be completely out of our control.

3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?

a.) Social Media

b.) Friends

c.) Family

I believe social media is the most powerful because it can be completely addicting.

1. How would you define denial in your own words? ÃÂ

Denial is the act of rejecting facts, often due to cognitive dissonance or not being able to accept them.

2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?

It automates and controls much of our everyday actions, streamlining the process of judgment and decision making.

3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?

  1. Food: eating food is a maladaptive way of coping with emotions. I think most people have done the activity of “stress-eating,” where food serves as a temporary distraction to strong emotions. Nowadays, it is very easy to obtain pre-packaged food, and it is consumed in large amounts in wealthier countries. Also, junk food can become addicting as it alters the gut microbiome so that one craves it more, starting a vicious cycle.

  2. Social media: social media platforms have millions of creators constantly putting out new content. Paired with engagement-tracking algorithms, it is designed to keep viewers engaged and consuming as much content is possible. Using social media decreases attention span as people want more. It also may give the illusion of interconnectedness where there is none. It is ultimately not rewarding in the long-term, as scrolling on social media is time spent consuming rather than creating, which does not give a sense of fulfillment.

  3. Accomplishments: many people are socialized to base their sense of self on their accomplishments. They also use accomplishments as a way to gain others’ approval and thus a sense of connection. Connection, however, is built rather through genuine interactions. “I wish I had worked less hard” is on the top five regrets of the dying. People spend their time waiting for their lives to start (e.g. “after this project!” “after this promotion!”), not realizing that it’s already passing by them. The most meaningful accomplishments are accomplishments that leave people fulfilled, not just for the status and perceived identity.

The most powerful distraction system is accomplishments. As a society, we already condemn social media and stress-eating as negative, and their detrimental impacts are widely acknowledged. There are many guides and systems to counter these two distractions. However, we are socialized from a young age to base our sense of self on accomplishments that are meaningless in the long-term. This widespread mindset, as well as the competitive nature of the job market and a lack of social welfare, keeps people working towards accomplishments that are draining to them.

@anjellyna stress-eating-- that's a great one and i do agree with you that many people use it as a distraction system ! it can also be very, very hard to control for some once they get started <3

MelodyoftheOcean June 13th, 2022

@anjellyna

1. How would you define denial in your own words? While denial is a coping method that allows you time to adjust to painful conditions, it can obstruct therapy and your ability to overcome obstacles.

2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that run outside of awareness or the unconscious? unconscious information processing has been equated with subliminal information processing, unconscious mentation, and its potential to impact judgments and behavior are unnoticed because we are in denial.

3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why? Online, wealth, and school because we are obsessed with them, focusing so closely on them rather than what is in front of us.

@MinisterMichelle i do agree that we should focus on what's in front of us instead of things that don't have to matter so much to us <3 we can live freely without so much of it but we sometimes think we can't live without it because it makes us think we're happy !

Hello there!

  1. Denial is a negative response to a request. Take the case of a club that wants to hold a concert to raise funds. When he expects the attendance of many people and his facilities are reduced, he plans to install a stage on the street. However, you must ask the government for a permit to do this, because you need to stop the road and stop the traffic. The club places an order but is rejected. Authorities justify refusing to have cars on this street.Another similar situation can occur within a company. The employee wants to have vacation without paying for the trip. To this end, he sends a report to the chairman of the company and explains his will. The manager responds to the denial and relies on the fact that his presence is currently indispensable as he does not have a suitable replacement for his position.
  2. That we dont even have to perceive them even tho The shave been already learnt.
  3. 1.Studying=The most powerful because it can make me feel like i havent done anything in my life yet 2.Sleeping 3.Phone

@Livingtohelplive i do agree that sleeping and phones are some good examples of distraction systems ! when people want to not feel the things they are feeling, a lot of them do tend to try sleeping it off or going on their phone to feel something else.

@GlenM

1. denial is the refusal to accept things as they are <3 you may show denial for your own needs and health. you may be feeling bad about something, but refuse to accept or believe that. you may feel a certain way but not want to and deny that as well.

2. things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious can be learned and practiced behaviors. that is how you do them automatically without feeling like you think about it <3

3. the top three distraction systems are social media, spending time with animals, and reading. i believe social media is the most powerful out of all of these. if you go on social media when you're not feeling too great, it can sort of become a habit and you could end up going online everytime you don't feel too good. it can be a pretty toxic distraction, in my opinion. that's why it's so powerful and so hard to stop for many people.
