Course 1, Discussion 5: 7 Cups Culture

Hope December 5th, 2022

Hello Leadership Crew!

I hope you have been benefitting from this course. This is the last discussion of our course 1.

We take culture seriously on 7 Cups because it is the heart of how we operate. A wise person once said: You teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are. We can have all of the best training content we want, but if our culture is not strong, then we will not be successful in growing a thriving, compassionate, community that will make a global impact.

Every organization has a culture whether by design or by default. When culture (including values and mission are not called out or made explicit, the organization defaults to an implicit or unstated culture. The unnamed culture is not always great for the end users or the community. An example of a common and implicit cultural rule or norm is that the person that makes the most money or the organization is the most important. People that work in this organization then, naturally, because it is the culture, start organizing themselves around ways to make more and more money. The ones at the top of the hierarchy are the ones that make the most money. 7 Cups cares less about money and more about compassion. We call out compassion and celebrate compassionate people because that is central to the work we do.

Please read our guide here to deeply understand our culture. We have made it explicit because we believe it is important to help us all be accountable to what we stand for and believe in. As leaders on 7 Cups, you will be models that emulate our culture and values.

@Hope Hey there!

3 things I've learnt are:

  1. The vision of 7 cups of tea. How it aims to provide free and premium mental health care all over the world and simultaneous foster more compassion, warmth and acceptance among people of the world, starting from this community.
  2. The values it holds. Which are very similar to mine and I love how this company sees us as human being and our potential. High expectations and high warmth is truly the best approach to take.
  3. How it helps to make us understand ourselves better and provides us opportunity to apply our strength to make the world a better place.

I found the slogan "High Expectations & High Warmth" to be thought-provoking, it captures a blend of ambition and empathy that could shape a well-rounded culture. Having been a listener for nearly five years, I would consider myself to be experienced, but the section on failure was reassuring and motivating. The section "Skin In The Game" reminded me of the saying "put your money where your mouth is". It takes genuine effort to be a listener, but it's immensely rewarding.

To help make it more real, in this post, please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you.

The 3 most important things I have learned from the guide are:

1. Trust: Trust is foundational in any relationship—personal, professional, or with oneself. Building trust means being reliable, transparent, and showing integrity, all of which foster respect and open communication. Trust in oneself is also crucial; it builds self-confidence, enabling you to take risks and embrace challenges, which are necessary for growth.

2. Solving the Problem that Matters: Focusing on the problems that have the most meaningful impact helps to direct energy toward what truly drives progress and success. This highlights the importance of prioritizing effectively and avoiding distractions. It’s about choosing tasks and goals that bring lasting value rather than simply staying busy.

3. Take Care of Yourself: Self-care is essential for sustained productivity and well-being. Physical health, mental wellness, and emotional resilience all contribute to your ability to handle challenges and pursue your goals. Taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity to avoid burnout, stay focused, and keep your motivation strong.

After reading the guide, I connected with three key aspects of the 7 Cups culture. First, compassion being at the core of everything we do is such an important reminder of why I joined this platform—to create a safe, supportive space for others. Leading with compassion builds trust and fosters genuine connections. Second, the focus on inclusivity and respect stands out. It’s so meaningful to create a space where everyone feels valued and heard, regardless of background. Lastly, the emphasis on growth and learning is inspiring. It pushes me to keep improving as a listener and a leader, so I can better serve the community. These values align with my own, and I’m excited to keep modeling them in my role here!

✒️To help make it more real, in this post, please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you. 1. Putting importance on finding a persons strengths to find the right work 'fit" for them is amazing! I really wish this was equally prioritized in all organizations. 2. Taking care of self aides a person to be at an optimal state in order to help others safely and responsibly. 3. Failure is expected is a reality for everyone it gives opportunity for growth!
