Learning foreign languages

User Profile: Huseen
Huseen Sunday

Hello everyone! I wish you all doing alright and hope you always have great day(s) ahead  of all of you in this community or whoever sees this post.

I would like to start a thread about learning new languages and would like to meet people who also do the same and if possible we could even practice sometimes!

Personally, I think that, working on something new which helps you to improve yourself such as learning languages and new cultures is one of the best things ever you can do in this life which if full of knowledge.

I also think that working on a new language could be helpful to distract yourself from the life problems and sometimes it also could help to cure your boredom and feel like a therapy.

(For me it makes me feel better whenever I learn new words and other stuff. :D )

So, If someone is down for learning a current language together or practicing it, feel free to join here or just text me as you wish.

Thank you everyone! Love to see y’all here!

(Oh and it is good to have you here as well! @MiskyMagic)

@MistyMagic Thank you for coming in again!

Well, sometimes I am working on to improve my English language skills (yes, I am not a native speaker sadly, but I am currently at level C1)

And I am currently focused on Spanish and French.

Hi there! @Grackl3

Of course it is! Is that even a question? lol

You are doing an absolute good job, keep going!

And may I know in which level of German are you in currently, (CEFFR Levels such as: A,B,C)  and how is your progress going so far?

@Huseen still just high A1. Im about a third of the way through section 3. I emphasize consistancy in my learning more than learning new things. and so far this has worked for me way better. I think it doesnt matter so much if it takes me years to learn, the time will pass anyway! but when Im really hard on myself to constantly improve, I burn out.

when I have low energy or really busy days Im allowed to just redo a story or some simple review. this keeps me regular, and keeping the habit has been much more fulfilling for me than the times I have spent a bunch of energy learning a lot in a week just to drop it the second Im too tired. its also really helped with my retention of older vocabulary and skills.

I do have weeks where I have extra time and energy to really go at it, and then I'll spend a few weeks kinda idley absorbing all the new info in review.

it feels really nice this way, and I feel like its been really good for my mental health too to see such a consistent lovely number. Im building it day by day!

it will probably be a bit more time before Im properly fluent, but thats okay. I think this is the most realistic approach for myself and Im really happy with it. consistancy is key for me!

Hi again! It is good to see your process and thank you for sharing it with all of us here.

Know that you are doing a great job and I wish one day you could be better at it and even become a native speaker :D

Also, İt is really good to see we do have the same mindset about learning new stuff and we do it when we got free time or just when bored, it is all good for yourself tho!

Again, you are doing great and I wish you achieve all of your goals in this life no matter what they are.

Never, ever give up! Keep going! You git this 🙏

Hey there @pinkKite8784

It is really cool to see you are interested in German and Chinese.

How do you manage to remember them after tho? Is it really that hard to learn those as some people say?

I wish you all the best on your journey and would like to give to German a try.

@Huseen

Honestly my friends tell me that i have a good memory so i don't really have a problem remembering new German vocabulary. It's also similar to English, which helps quite a lot. Although i do need to repeat the words around 4-5 times before i remember it.

Whereas for Chinese, i've only started learning Chinese, so i don't really know how to memorize Chinese characters effectively. And yes, Chinese is as difficult as people say. Because it's very different from English and Chinese has tones and characters, which most languages don't have. But i think that "difficult" is a subjective word, and what may be difficult for one person may be quite easy for another. For example, i have a Chinese friend and he said that English is harder than Chinese 😭

Hi again, and thank you for sharing all of your experiences and your helpful answers!

I am really glad to see you got a good memory here! People who has the strong memory are the most likely be the most intelligent also 😁

Also you said that German is like English, but you already might know that, there is a lot of “kinda weird sounding” and complex words and pronounciations in there and it always seemed hard to me as well I am not gonna lie.

Also one more thing that I agree with the last thing you said about chinese language and what that one friend thinks about. It is really interesting for me that how people things their own language is easy for everyone and they believe that they can also learn it as well since because they know it very well (because they are the native speakers) but in fact, it requires a lot of effort to do so.

@Huseen

Yes, i agree with you. I struggle with German umlauts especially because it doesn't exist in my native language or in English. And also, you can combine words in German and you can make really really long words as well, like Kraftfahrzeug-Haftpflichtversicherung. But the most difficult part of learning German for me is German cases, articles, and just German grammar in general. But honestly i feel like German is nothing compared to Chinese. And because i'm learning both of the same time, i don't really feel frustrated when i'm learning German.

@Huseen

I don't really have a lot of memorization tips, but here are some (for learning German):

- use flashcards

- make a sentence using the new word that you've just learned, instead of just memorizing a list of words and its meanings

- if you love music, it's a good idea to listen to songs, as you can learn new vocabulary from songs

Also, does anyone have any tips for memorizing Chinese characters?

@Huseen I totally agree with you—learning new languages is such an amazing way to grow and connect with others. It’s not just about the words but also understanding new cultures and perspectives, which makes the process so rewarding. I also find that it’s a great escape from daily stress, and it’s so satisfying to see your progress, even with small things like learning a new phrase or understanding a sentence. I’m currently learning French and would love to practice with others too! Let’s keep this thread going—it’s great to meet like-minded people.

I also enjoy learning languages. I recently found that it helps take my mind off stuff while working my brain, also I find it fun. I've been learning French, Arabic, and Korean.

I also love to learn languages! One of my majors in college was Linguistics and I loved every single class! Learning languages is one of the coolest hobbies to have! It's challenging enough to keep the brain occupied, but still fun to keep me motivated to continue to learn.
