Group Support Roles Update!

ASilentObserver August 18th, 2023

Hello everyone,

I hope you're all doing well! Today, I wanted to talk to you about a couple of updates we have for our group support roles in terms of training. We've also created a new moderator guide to help moderators navigate their responsibilities effectively.

Update I) Group Support roles: Addition of Training Guides

Firstly, let's discuss the introduction of additional training in group roles. We understand that as our community grows, it becomes crucial to ensure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to their roles and responsibilities. By implementing specific training guide completion, we aim to provide a better understanding of the topic.

Completion of training guides will be a mandatory process for all applicants who wish to take up a group role. We want to equip our group leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their roles and contribute positively to our community. The information is now available in both the room supporter and moderator guides.

Update II) New Moderator Guide

Now, let's move on to the new moderator guide. This guide is updated to assist our moderators in effectively carrying out their responsibilities. Moderators play a crucial role in maintaining the harmony and integrity of our community, and we believe that providing them with a clear set of guidelines will enhance their effectiveness.

We believe that these updates will not only streamline our group roles but also foster a stronger sense of community and collaboration.

We are committed to continuous improvement and growth. Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication. If you all have any suggestions or ideas to strengthen and support our leaders better, please do share them with us.

@ASilentObserver

The addition of the Training Guides requirements is a wise decision, I think. Anyone in a community team serving a specific group should know the best possible about the issues in that group, and the best ways to approach them.

Another resource I think is useful to learn how to handle situations about specific issues are the "Listener Guides" and "Mock Chats" for different conditions, which can be found in the Listener Learning and Journey Community:

https://www.7cups.com/forum/listenerjourney/ListenerResourcesMockChatGuides_2381/

Some of the many posts there, on so many subjects, have very valuable tips about how to handle chats with people with the specific mental health conditions we will support, and how to handle different situations that we might face in chats. They are more practical than the Training Guides, more "How to" for Listeners than scientific explanations or self-help guides.

Though they were written for one-on-one chats, Room Supporters and Chatroom Moderators might benefit from reading the guides and mock chats relevant to their specific subcommunities.

Anyway...

Congratulations on the wise and useful improvements, which will translate into better support for Members in group chats!

And thank you so much for your continuous efforts to make things better, not only in Group Support but all around 7 Cups!

You are a powerhouse of support and improvement of this Community!

Thanks for the update @ASilentObserver a new moderator guide sounds great! - should it be linked on this post or can you explain where the guide can be found please?

One suggestion about the guides to be completed for Personality Disorders team - OCD and Schizophrenia aren't Personality Disorders so I don't think these are the best guides for this community. Perhaps it could be changed to Managing Emotions and ACT as they are more relevant? And keep Traumatic Experiences. Tagging @MeaningfulSilence for their thoughts on this.

Hi Lou, my bad... using cellphone i didn't check the list that has a very small view šŸ”Ž

OCPD isn't OCD and Schizophrenia is in "Bipolar, Schizophrenia and Psychosis Support Community ".

Tbh I was thinking the same. I also think that adding trainings specific to actual personality disorders should be created. Itā€™s honestly gotten to a point where everyone hears ā€œpersonality disorderā€ and thinks one stereotypical thing. There are several personality disorders and all have different symptoms and effects on people. Even two people with the same diagnosis will have different experiences. Maybe I notice it more than others since I struggle with BPD so Iā€™m kind of paying attention to it more than others but there is such a lack of understanding of personality disorders as a whole on 7cups. I really do thing trainings specific to individuals personality disorders would be extremely helpful, though Iā€™m sure my words here mean nothing since Iā€™ve been trying to find ways to bring awareness and legitimate information about them to this platform for quite a while and have so far gotten nowhere.

@Mack

I definitely agree with you on this Mack. I hope that there is scope to put together a self-help guide(s) for Personality Disorders, particularly BPD as there is a lack of understanding and knowledge.

In the meantime, there is a brilliant collection of posts which break down DBT skills here: https://www.7cups.com/forum/personalitydisorders/DBTuesday_2147/DBTuesdayMasterpost_274756/

@Mack Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Bringing awareness to personality disorders is an important step. I can understand the frustration of wanting to help educate others but feeling your words don't make an impact but please know each step counts. I think we can work on creating a self help guide on BPD. You have the passion to helping people understand the complex realities of different disorders.
