Member Chatroom Rules Guide

ASilentObserver June 18th, 2021

Hi everyone, I hope you are doing well.

A couple of weeks ago it was brought to my attention that we as a community are not well aligned and synced on our chatroom guidelines and it is still confusing what is acceptable and what is not.

It is understandable because the Chatroom Guidelines tab in the room covers only broad outlines of the guidelines and not the detailed version of it. That is why to ensure all members, listeners, and leaders are on the same page related to chatroom guidelines, we redrafted and updated the chatroom guidelines guide in alignment with the current protocols and rules related to chat room participation.

To check it out, please click here: https://tinyurl.com/2abpppuy

Please review and let us know if we are missing anything that needs to be covered and explained.

I am grateful to you for all your support and cooperation in keeping the chat room safe, supportive and respectful for all.

Table of Contents (7 numbered on right) - ", or anyone's username"
That is a little extreme. There are special events where we bring up usernames, we tell users who to contact, and there are situations with 'regulars' where a bit of information is fine. Ie. A normal cohost is sick.

Intro - mentioned this in another forum thread. This link seems to have nothing to do with a Zero Tolerance Policy

Pro Tip: A good scanning question for messages is: is this supportive? Is this kind? If it is not, it is breaking rule
No, people can say things that aren't supportive without being mean. Ie. I'm tired. Nothing wrong with that message.

  • Overly graphic descriptions of sex, violence, bodily functions (including bodily fluids) especially when geared towards talking about the subject rather than seeking support → A rule of thumb here is: If you have no trouble imagining what happened because the description is detailed enough, it is inappropriate

I think we need to be careful here about what we are exxluding. It seems like we're adding onto stigma about bodily functions and fluids.

Additionally, we do not provide support to those who need medical attention right away. For more, please read our Crisis Policy

Our Crisis Policy actually says nothing about medical attention.

As you may notice, a lot of these questions can be triggering in their own right,
What questions?

it’s extremely important to thread carefully.
Tread carefully, not thread.

No use of CAPS.
The group rules don't at all make this sound like it would be against guidelines. I suggest including this in the rules themselves.

, giving advice on how to obtain medications,
Telling someone to use something is very different then helping someone obtain something. Helping with resources should be allowed!

Talks about religion and politics are not permitted.
There used to be a line about it being ok when seeking support. This should be added back in IMO.

Ideally, to issue the warning, a user has to say something very clearly indicating they have been removed from the rooms, for example “hey it’s (name), I’m back” “okay finally back here guys, those mutes are ridiculous”
Most mutes are not permanent. Someone stating they are back shouldn't be a problem.

It applies to situations such as calling every moderator “mod”
I don't think this is inappropriate when it's not in conjunction with other problems.

@7Cups community, in addition to the above suggestions, I think that the way this rule is written:

  1. Be Considerate: Don't SPAM the room, please do not give medical advice, and let's keep religion and politics out of our support areas.
Is combing things that aren't necessarily related. Giving medicatl advice can be considerate. For example.
Also, I think the religion and politics in the document could use more clarification. My understanding is that the Current Events Room is there for those who want to be supported regarding things like current political events for example (it went from a COVID topic room to Current Events when BLM was big in the news). Also, in the past we have been told that these topics can be brought up in terms of getting support, it would be good to have clarification on that.

More broadly, I think we need to make all the guidelines more clear and consistent to find. Currently, this thread isn't pinned. There are threads in the group support area that are pinned with outdated rules. I would suggest pinning this and unpinning/moving to the archived thread guidelines that are not current. There are guidelines that I don't see covered here, ie. roleplay, this should include things like that too. The community guideline page should have a link to the expanded chatroom information, just as it has for the forums. The behaviour report information should also be linked there. One should be able to find all the guidelines in the support & feedback area ie. Overall, Forums and Chatrooms, not just the forums like I see currently.

Guidelines are important and making sure that everyone is able to accessible is important as well. What is a way do you think we can make it easier to accessible for to find the guidelines?

@7CupsCommunity As mentioned above, have a place where they are all together. Stop requiring a forum hunt to find everything. Why does support and feedback only have some? Why are ones that are out of date pinned and new ones not?

@AffyAvo

Accesible to resources is important and the Community Ambassador Asher is currently in the works of putting them in one Subforum with all the domain information about there guidelines so it's easier to find them. We will look into the issue about the support and update information in the forum being in one area so it's easier to find the information.

@7CupsCommunity @ASilentObserver

We were asked to review this document. I feel like I laid out some great feedback on June 18, being very detailed and quoting what is in the document. Even as something as simple as a typo still hasn't been adjusted in the document though.

I feel like a lot of the time and effort I spend here on giving detailed feedback doesn't actually get used. I do not mean I think every single suggestion I give should result in that change being made. I see feedback and suggestions from others too that does not get acted upon (this is not a generalization of what others think, it is what I directly observe). There are a fair number problems and inconsistencies on 7cups and progress on dealing with these is extremely slow.

At times, it does feel like there is more effort being put into things like icebreakers than solving problems, despite the effort being put in by volunteers to help with the troubleshooting.

Why ask us to review a document such as this if nothing is going to be done with it?

@7CupsCommunity are there any plans to improve the document? Were my specific suggestions about the document not useful feedback?
