Announcement: Group Mod Challenge
Hello Moderator Team
I’ve got a challenge for you! Are you ready?
- Take a look at the communication styles as shown in the image above. Which four of the styles fit your communication style best? Let us know that in the comments below!
- Find a mod to partner up with to go mod and foster healthy conversation in the chat rooms for half an hour at least 6 times in a two-week span.
- Observe and take notes on the communication approach of your mod partner and the mod partner will be doing the same for you. (Please note that communication styles and approaches can and will vary and that’s alright!)
- Participate in the Group Mod Zone Room and compare your notes and share with fellow mods to learn about each others’ communication styles. Also, share the vibe of the room you both were modding to share in the Mod Room. The vibe of the room here means how was the room environment at the start of joining and when you left. You could share it on a scale of 1-10 where 1 would be “Meh” and 10 as “Awesome”.
Your mod partner can be:
- Any community moderator on shift (just let them know 1-1 before you join as a partner with them on their shift).
- A fellow community-centered chat room moderator of the same community who could be present at the same time as you will be able to participate in the room.
- A global moderator who could be present at the same time as you will be able to participate in the room.
To complete the challenge of visiting and moderating the rooms at least six times in a two-week span, your mod partner can be different if the same mod partner can’t be present. If you have more than one partner, you will simply take notes of different mods' communication styles and approaches and share them with them and fellow moderators in the group mod zone.
Every time you complete one session, drop it in the comments of this thread to log your active participation.
The goal of this challenge:
- Identify your own communication approach in the group dynamics and how it changed/evolved as the situation in the room changed.
- Identify how having a partner with you changed/ helped to foster a supportive and compassionate environment in the chatroom.
- What were the challenges? What surprised you? What type of communication approach works best for you?
At the end of this two-week challenge, you will receive information for the next one! And at the end of the quarter, the top 3 chat room moderators who complete all the challenges successfully will be awarded the most prestigious award: Award-Winning Mod!
Criteria of Award-Winning Mod
- Being passionate about group support chat rooms
- Being compassionate and engaging with the community members
- Being professional and ensure the safety of the room
- Using active listening and de-escalation with all chat participants.
- Being supportive to the fellow chat room moderators and room supports
- Being an open-minded communicator
- Being yourself and having fun while being there in the rooms.
Fun fact! To this day, only 12 chat room moderators have earned this exclusive award! And for extra incentive, every chat room moderator will be awarded 100 cheers per activity they complete.
I am signing up for the challenge and I invite every moderator to accept the challenge too! May we grow together as the best moderators of the community!
Activity #71
Partner: @CommunityModElliot
Session date: April 26th, 2021
Session time: 3:30pm-4:00pm
Room: Support Room 24/7 (Adult) / Member Community Room (Adult)
Notes: Started this activity a bit unexpectedly. We both happen to respond to an ER mod request in MCR. We then proceeded to co-host / co-mod a check-in session in SR. The session went well, hopefully the members felt supported. As usual, Elliot is a socializer, and I'm a mix between thinker and relator.
@richuyulin 71? :O you are unbeatable!
@CommunityModElliot LOL 71 is still not the up to date logs. I fell behind on logging.
Activity #72
Partner: @CommunityModParker
Session date: April 26th, 2021
Session time: 6:15pm-6:45pm
Room: Sharing Circle (Adult)
Notes: Stopped by Sharing Circle during transition time. There was quite a bit of chaos and confusion with members talking over each other during shares as previous hour had no host. Worked together with Parker to bring some structure back to the room. I still think Parker's style might be thinker. Thank you for letting me join you! Looking forward to working with you again in the future.
Oops forgot to edit time when I copied and pasted previous post. It should be 4:00pm-4:30pm.
@richuyulin now you've done the challlenge for 7 people
Lol. Are you keeping track of how many people I've completed challenge for, for me? 😛
Activity #73
Partner: @CommunityModElliot
Session date: April 26th, 2021
Session time: 10:30pm-11:00pm
Room: Sharing Circle (Adult) / Support Room 24/7 (Adult)
Notes: Started this activity off with an active supportive check-in session in support room. About half way throught the activity, we got called to Sharing Circle to deal with an unsupportive and rude member who was repeatedly interrupting shares. As usual, Elliot is a socializer, and I'm a mix between thinker and relator. Thank you for letting me join you on your shift!
Activity #74
Partner: @CommunityModAaron
Session date: April 27th, 2021
Session time: 1:00am-1:30am
Room: Sharing Circle (Adult) / Support Room 24/7 (Adult)
Notes: So for this activity, we decided to swap rooms from our last activity as it was another relatively quiet period. Aaron was in Sharing Circle helping out with Healthy Habit session while I was in Support Room leading check-in session and supporting members. I think Aaron's moderation style a mix of socializer and relator.
Activity #75
Partner: @CommunityModRobin
Session date: April 27th, 2021
Session time: 9:20am-10:00am
Room: Sharing Circle (Adult)
Notes: Co-hosted / co-modded Healthy Habits session. We didn't really face any challenges during the session. Everyone was supportive which was really nice to see. I think Robin's during the session is relator. Thank you for letting me join you on your shift!

Session time: 2:00pm-2:30pm
Room: Support Room 24/7 (Adult)
Notes: Co-hosted / co-modded yet another SR check-in session with Elliot taking the lead and supporting members. We didn't encounter any challenges during the activity. It was really nice to see members supporting each other. As usual, Elliot is a socializer, and I'm a mix between thinker and relator. Thank you for letting me join you on your shift!
Activity #77
Partner: @CommunityModElliot
Session date: April 27th, 2021
Session time: 3:30pm-4:00pm
Room: Support Room 24/7 (Adult)
Notes: In contrast to the last check-in session we co-hosted / co-modded, this time I took the lead for hosting session and supporting members. Once again, we didn't encounter any challenges during the activity. And it was really nice to see members supporting each other. As usual, Elliot is a socializer, and I'm a mix between thinker and relator. Thank you for letting me join you on your shift!
Activity #78
Partner: @CommunityModCharlie
Session date: April 27th, 2021
Session time: 5:10pm-5:40pm
Room: Sharing Circle (Adult), Support Room 24/7 (Adult), Member Community Room 24/7 (Adult), Depression (Adult), Disability Support (Adult)
Notes: This was an unplanned activity. I just happened to join Charlie on his shift while responding to a series of ER mod requests. All false reports but none the less co-modding and visiting different rooms was a nice experience.
Activity #79
Partner: @CommunityModElliot
Session date: April 27th, 2021
Session time: 10:30pm-11:00pm
Room: Support Room 24/7 (Adult) / Member Community Room
Notes: Hosted SR check-in session. Just as we wrapped up the session, we were called to deal with a situation in MCR (next log entry will talk a little more about this). As usual, Elliot is a socializer, and I'm a mix between thinker and relator. Thank you for letting me join you on your shift!
Activity #80
Partner: @CommunityModElliot
Session date: April 27th, 2021
Session time: 11:00pm-12:00am
Room: Sharing Circle (Adult) / Member Community Room (Adult)
Notes: Multi-tasking during this activity. Co-hosted / co-modded Healthy Habit session while backing up Jovial in Member Community Room in sorting things out there. We resorted to using icebreaker session to redirect conversation. As usual, Elliot is a socializer, and I'm a mix between thinker and relator. Thank you for letting me join you on your shift!
