What’s the Most Hurtful Thing Someone Has Ever Said to You? Let’s Laugh (and Cry) Together!

Alright, folks, let’s stir things up a bit. I’m calling out those soul-crushing, jaw-dropping, “did they really just say that?” moments—the ones we still think about in the shower 10 years later, plotting our ultimate comeback. What’s the most hurtful thing someone’s ever said to you?

I’ll start, because fair is fair. One time, someone looked me dead in the eyes and said: “You have the personality of an overcooked potato.” AN. OVERCOOKED. POTATO. Like, excuse me?! At least compare me to mashed potatoes or something versatile and comforting. But no, they went straight for the dry, flavorless insult that haunts me to this day.

Or there’s my friend, who once got told by a teacher: “You’re the reason I drink.” The TEACHER. Imagine doing your homework and still being blamed for someone’s Merlot habit.

But here’s the thing—those words hurt then, but now? Now we laugh about them (and also secretly hope karma got those people back). That’s the beauty of sharing these moments: they lose their power over you when you can throw a little humor at them and share them with people who get it.

So, hit me with your stories. Let’s turn this into a group roast of the most ridiculous, hurtful things we’ve ever heard. You can go deep if you want, but even the small, dumb insults count—like that time someone said your new haircut made you look like a “vegetable emoji” (that one hurt a little, not gonna lie).

And hey, if your story is truly wild, I’ll pin it as the Hall of Fame Hurtful Comment. So, let’s hear it: What’s the thing someone said to you that still makes you go, “WOW, okay, thanks for that”? Bonus points if it’s funny, weird, or just downright petty. Let’s keep it light, and maybe—just maybe—we’ll all feel a little better after laughing at the absurdity of it all.

Alright, your turn—don’t leave me hanging! Btw i will post this in another forum just to reach more people.

@brightaday I guess ima start, mines not a big wild thing, in fact its really small but maybe I will get this forum going. I had a toxic friend, and my bunny/best friend Captain had passed away a couple days ago so I was grieving hard when this happened. We met up one day and she told me 'Captain deserved to die' like bro wth, but her house burnt down a few yrs later so im at peace lol

Oh wow, “Captain deserved to die”? That’s not even toxic that’s full-blown villain origin story behavior. But hey, looks like karma stopped by her house for tea and decided to stay a while. Captain is probably thumping in approval from the other side. You deserved way better friends (and Captain definitely deserved a lot more respect). 💪❤️

@brightaday 'personality of an overcooked potato' ouch! lol.

Two times come to mind and unfortunately, neither are funny.

I was maybe 12 and playing happily in the basement when my mom came down and said a bird got trapped in the garage and died because it kept smashing into the windows attempting to escape before she could free it. I said 'Okay.' I was not bothered. Then she said something along the lines of 'You're heartless! You should be sad!' and I was completely taken aback and upset that I wasn't upset about the bird dying and now I have 'You're heartless' echoing in my head whenever I feel myself not reacting with the utmost empathy for anything. I guess I can make fun of that by making beep boop sounds and doing a robot dance the next time the thought comes up lol.

Second one was when I was maybe 17 and I was very reclusive at school, only talked to my best friend, and then my best friend turned around and said 'You're selfish!' because I didn't make the effort to reach out to others or share my life with others and I just put my head down on my desk and started crying because being selfish is my worst fear. Bonus: this is the same friend who declared to me 'You hate people!' I guess I can turn this into a joke by owning it with an evil laugh: mwhahaha! yes, it is I, the villian!

idk writing all this was 25 percent fun and 75 percent depressing lol

I gained weight after my daughter was born. My husband told me he was embarrassed by me! Then when a lost a significant amount of weight and was very thin he told me I was ‘starting’ to look better. It still hurts after 30+ years.

needless to say, we are no longer married and he married a cubby lady🤦🏼

Sounds like your ex had a PhD in being awful. Good riddance! Honestly, the irony of him marrying someone curvy after all that nonsense is chef’s kiss. You’ve been thriving without that negativity, and he can keep his embarrassing opinions to himself.❤️

For the bird: What were you supposed to do, deliver a eulogy? Beep boop robot dance is the perfect comeback—clearly, you’re not heartless, just 12. 🥲

For the “selfish” friend: Sounds like they were projecting. Own the villain vibe with your evil laugh—mwhahaha! Reserved doesn’t mean selfish, it means you’re saving your energy for people who deserve it.😌

@brightaday Deliver a eulogy lol. I was just 12, but I've come to realize now that my mom has unrealistic traditional idealisms about things, so when her little daughter wasn't a perfect empathetic angel, she got upset. She's also gotten upset about me not being girly and thinking 'weird deep thoughts' lol. I don't really take her seriously anymore. And I do think that my friend might have been projecting, especially since whenever I go to visit her, she always puts her needs before mine and I realize she has always done this since day one. I'm still trying to find people to spend my energy on though and it's been a decade since high school lol.

@anonyLoner7 Wow. If you were going to make light of something this horrible, I guess you could dress up as a ghost and throw both your middle fingers up at her, like damn. That is not an ok thing to say.

I can’t imagine the pain of hearing something so cruel, especially from someone who’s supposed to be family. That comment says so much more about her lack of empathy than it ever could about you. You’ve endured an unimaginable loss, and to face that kind of negativity on top of it is beyond unfair. I truly hope you’ve surrounded yourself with people who lift you up and remind you of your strength because you deserve nothing less. Her words may sting, but they’ll never define the incredible resilience you’ve shown.❤️❤️❤️❤️

When I was looking for moral support, I was telling people about my abuse, and I was called "beneath contempt" by one of my old friends.

“Beneath contempt”? Did they pull that line out of a Shakespeare play? Honestly, sounds like they were just auditioning for the role of Worst Friend Ever. Sharing your story takes guts, and their reaction says more about their lack of emotional intelligence than anything about you. You’re not beneath contempt you’re above their pay grade!❤️❤️❤️🙌

I’m so sorry your family treated you that way that’s a level of betrayal that cuts deep. Wanting some form of justice or to see them feel the same hurt is totally natural. But here’s the kicker: the best “vengeance” is living your life on your terms, thriving without their toxic energy. They don’t deserve to be in your headspace. The fact that you’re even thinking about moving forward shows how strong you are, and that’s the real punchline in this story you’re winning by just being you. ❤️🙌

alright i have some that are really serious and some are unserious,

1) someone once said to me, unprovoked while i was working "are you really that pale or is your makeup skills just really sh1tty".....i still don't know how to respond to that but ouch bruh

2) "you deserved to get r^ped, you're such a slvt" this one was told to me after i had gotten taken advantage of by this guy i went out on a date with and while we were under the influence, i befriended his neighbor through quick add on *** and i told the neighbor what the guy did to me, and he said that just out of the blue but it really hurt me, i still think about the incident everyday even though it's been almost a year

3) "you look like mavis from hotel transylvania" i get told this all the time at school, this one doesn't actually offend me in any way but i just like playing along and being astonished by it

4) "i really wish dad went through and finished you off when he nearly beat you to death" i don't remember how what or why this was said to me, i just remember it was said because my sister was upset at me for something

That comment about your makeup? Honestly, that person must have mistaken you for a makeup artist in training. You’re too pale? Just tell them it’s called “moonlight chic,” and they clearly don’t know fashion.

What a disgusting, heartless thing to say. That “neighbor” doesn’t even deserve to be in the same room as you, let alone speaking to you. You are so much stronger than those hurtful words. Take back your power you deserve respect, love, and support, not cruel comments from people who don’t matter.

Mavis? You should totally lean into it! Throw on some dark lipstick, rock that “vampire chic” look, and tell them you’re just waiting for your Transylvanian castle to come through. Who doesn’t love a classic, timeless look, right?🙌

Wow, that’s a level of cruelty that’s just unreal. No one should ever say something like that, especially family. But the thing is, your sister’s words have nothing to do with your worth. You’ve survived things that would break most people, and that’s what truly matters. You’re still here, and you’re stronger than anyone who’d say that to you.

You’ve been through so much, and the strength you show by talking about these things is inspiring. Keep your head up you’re worthy of love, respect, and peace.❤️

What a piece of work your ex was! Trying to bring you down with all that nonsense while you were already going through so much? Classic move from someone who clearly doesn’t know how to handle someone as strong as you. “More mature” than you? Yeah, sure, tell that to someone who’s still stuck in high school-level drama. You’re way smarter, stronger, and more beautiful than he could ever comprehend. And honestly, his loss gullible? No, you were just trusting, which is way better than whatever he was trying to do. You dodged a bullet there!❤️🙌
