"stellar" for the diatrymas while they were alive, I guess... Heaven help you if you're a primitive hunter-forager living in the territory of a flock of terror birds. Those creatures stood around nine feet tall at the top of the head, could easily outrun a grown man & their kicks could match or beat a back-kick from a horse--& the birds could generate it in a forward kick! On top of all that, the best protection you could get in those days was a bow & arrows or a spear with a head of chipped flint or obsidian...sure it's sharp if made correctly, but stone points are rather brittle. Not the best thing to bet your life on.

An interesting question. 🤔 ...I suspect they can't since they don't have functional upper limbs. They have vestigial wings, but no arms. A diatryma (or an emu) might be able to jump up into low-lying branches but if the bird doesn't land on a branch strong enough to support its weight, then presumably the creature would lose its balance & fall out of the tree.
