Medication, Goodbye and deleting my account

Today I was told by 3 moderators that by me saying (on my member's profile) that I was on [edited for mentioning drug names] and had side effects I was promoting drug addiction and suicide. I have been on this medication since I was 11 it affects me more than anything else in my life and I feel deeply hurt that I can't even mention which medication I am having issues with or side effects as it may 'give people ideas'.

Alcohol, glue allsorts of things give people ideas glue can either be used for being creative and making art or used for addiction, the same with certain meds like codeine it can help those that need it and it can be abused. I find it very weird I can't talk openly here about what I'm going through and feel it is time to leave 7cups.

I have decided not to delete my account as I am going to remain supporting those messaging me and have realized that those who were so critical of me came from a different country with an entirely different view to medication.

Hey there, I'm sorry that happened to you and you had a bad experience! As a rule of thumb; however, one of the rules that applies to all Group Support and Listener rooms prohibits the mentioning of specific medication names. This is because it may trigger addiction to others if some Members are at risk of being suicidal, and probably other reasons as well! That was the reason I could think of at the top of my head at least. Tagging @Heather and @Jenna if they want to weigh in more reasons or if I was incorrect! As long as the Listener is comfortable, I believe it'll be alright to discuss side effects of medication and how it effects you. You may also PM the Moderator who warned you about why theu warned you so you can be cautious not to do it again. Remember, as with all warnings, do take this as a growth opportunity rather than an "Oh no I'm in trouble!" We all make mistakes, even Moderators! You're not in trouble heartI'm glad you've decided to stay on 7 Cups and take care laugh

10. Please do not share names of drugs or medication with others.
This is again, for safety reasons. You can discuss being on medication, or problems with drugs/addiction, but if you share the actual name of the drug or medication you may receive a warning.

This post explains why each warning happens

10) Please do not share names of drugs or medications with others.

We briefly experimented with allowing drug and medication names to be used, however this raised numerous safety concerns and we received a lot of feedback suggesting that it is safer to refrain from sharing names at this time.

This post also says pretty much the same thing about the rule

Most times when a drug name is mentioned, a conversation is made out of the topic of that med and people get into reasons why it's safe, or unsafe. People have opinions of medications and think all are bad, and you have some who feel it's okay to take anything. While everyone is allowed to have their opinions and feelings, people can feel the influence to take or not take a drug or their own drugs which can be dangerous for their health.It should all be directed by medical professionals. It's okay to express your feelings about an addiction, or a medication you have to take for a condition you live with, but we want to take these precautions to keep everyone safe.

I have no issue with the fact that i can't mention medicine names due to it triggering people who may have an addiction, i now understand that but to say that someone would commit suicide becuase someone mentioned the name of a drug is absolutely rediculous. I also think as drugs affect people with long term conditions more than anything else, (alot of us take up to 20 tablets at least a day) i think it is vital to have a space on here that is openly allowing conversations about the symptoms and difficulties of that medication. I was told i wasn't allowed to talk about the name of it, the symptoms or the difficulties associated with medication at all... @Jenna

Not sharing meds names is for safety issue, and avoiding to encourage people to take specific meds/drugs by themselves, or stop to take a prescribe med, based on opinion of other people. It is for avoiding controversal topics and conflicts on the rooms and forums.

but it's not because you can't mention the names that you can't seeking and getting support about your conditions, your addiction or how you feel about your treatment. By example, it's totally ok to say "my pain meds don't work", "my depression meds gives me side effects such xxxx" or "I can't work without my drugs, the withdrawal makes me xxxxx", etc.

Totally it was more the way that it was handled that i objected to, total lack of understanding i was told that people could talk about alcohol and illigal drug addiction yet i'm not allowed to say the symptoms of a very common drug used to treat our dissorders. If someone is so easily triggered that they are going to commit suicide just becuase someone mentioned they were on painkillers they need hospitilastion and not an online forum. @vivelespatates

I do find it odd that people can openly talk about alcohol even though that can trigger otheres; but can't mention certain other medications, it is all a bit confusing. I understand the reasons behind the rules, and generally support them; but the ways they are enforced mean I am often unsure if I am breaking the rules when posting certain things. I've been warning for a post before, and when I explained that the word didn't mean one medication it was an unbrella term for lots of meds which is why I used it, I was told it was ok then to use it. I'm still unsure if that was one person's view or if that is policy. People often make posts which name a drug in them and they aren't flagged e.g Meth. Why is that allowed, or is it just that no one flaging them, or the area isn't being closely monitored?

It was one person's view.

The rule is that we are not to name any drug or medication, but no one ever enforces that rule. Instead, different people enforce different things at different times.

@RarelyCharlie OK thanks for the response. That goes a ways to explain why things are so confusing though.

So if it isn't always enforced why was i banned for mentioning a drug that isn't even illigal and is even in children's medication yet other people can talk about illigal drugs and alcohol?! @RarelyCharlie

@RarelyCharlie

If a mod is present in the rooms and someone is breaking the rules of the chatroom, they should be enforcing the rules. Not only sometimes as they see fit.

@Jenna

Well yes! We are surely all agreed on that wink

But I am not a mod, so telling me does nothing to resolve the situation.

@RarelyCharlie

Maybe not, but posting it in this post can make everyone aware of the right things to do.
