Help Wanted!: Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month!

Hello everyone

We are organising an event for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month!

What are developmental disabilities?

Developmental disabilities are long-term conditions. They may be physical, such as blindness. They may affect mental ability, such as learning disorders. Or they can be both physical and mental, such as Down syndrome. These are usually life-long, and can affect everyday living.

Other examples included: ADHD / ADD, autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, muscular dystrophies and spina bifida.

We hope to bring even more activity to the Disabilities Support chatroom and forums, as well as to highlight what it has to share!

So how are we going to honour this observance?

Discussions:

We are planning to host a variety of discussions. These discussions include general discussions relating to disability (and chronic illness/pain) as well as those that focus on developmental disabilities. We hope that these will happen throughout the month of March!

The schedule for March is available for discussion leaders to sign up on the discussion spreadsheet.

If you are a member who wishes to co-lead a discussion with a listener, please look at the spreqadsheet and message me (QuickJazz)!

Listeners: Please look here for further information and opportunities.

Forums:

If you have a developmental disability and would like to write a forum post, do an AMA or whatever you like, in honour of this month, then please let me know when you post it! I'd be glad to share it when announcing the event! You can submit suggestions here too!

Let's get this ball rolling!!

@QuickJazz What if you don't have the disability, but you have dealt w/someone who has it your whole life? My lil brother has ADHD/Autism/mild cerebal palsy and many other issues. I have helped take care of him for almost 20 years. Now he is 30 and lives in a group home.

For those who wish to lead a discussion yet do not have said disabilities, you can still volunteer to lead things as we would then try to pair you with someone who does have said disabilities!

Additionally, if you feel you have the experience/knowledge to successfully lead a discussion on such a topic, then that is more than welcome too @TransAm85 ! We will show you the questions beforehand as well, so that you can see how confident you will feel leading them.

Hope that explains it okay!
