Member Appreciation Week - The True Measure of Value
Hey everyone! This week, we have a super special event to celebrate all of our lovely members here - member appreciation week!! (click here to see the announcement post!) our theme is “the true measure of value”, so let’s talk about that! 💙
What does “the true measure of value” mean?
It's important to recognize that everyone is valuable and worthy. We all have different cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds, abilities, gender identities, religions, beliefs, values, and opinions, but we all have one thing in common - we are all human and all deserve support.
What are values?
Your values are the things that YOU believe are important and they affect how you live your life and the decisions you make. These determine your priorities and how you create opinions about certain things. When the things that you do match these values, that can be a great source of happiness, so it’s great to figure them out!
How do values help you?
When we think about our personal values, we can find what’s important to us. Thinking about and recognizing these values can help us make lots of important decisions.
Values and Depression:
With depression specifically, sometimes we may find ourselves violating or ignoring our values because of the emotions that come with it. However, the more value we create and work with, the harder it can be to engage in some behaviours that keep us stuck in those devaluing moods. Trying to instead focus on our values and what we can do to feel better can really help us fight depressed moods. Let’s recommit to our values together!
Here is a challenge for you!
Find your values:
To find out what your values are, here is a fun activity that can help you think about and recognize your values!
1: Think about times when you were the happiest.
What were you doing? Who were you with? Were there any factors that contributed to this happiness?
2: Think about the times when you were the proudest.
What made you proud? What factors contributed to this feeling?
3: Think about the times when you were the most fulfilled.
What was it that was fulfilled or felt fulfilling? How did this give you some meaning? What factors contributed to this feeling?
Reference: Feel free to use this list below to help you think about some of your top values! (try to think of at least 3 and use the questions from the previous bit for reference!)

I'll begin with my example using something that made me happy!
1: Think about times when you were the happiest.
*remembers a time when i was happy*
What were you doing?
I was listening to music and partying!
Who were you with?
I was with a lot of my friends and a lot of people i hadn’t met yet, but specifically my best friend!
Were there any factors that contributed to this happiness?
Some factors that contributed to this happiness were having good food and not thinking about anything except being in the moment!
So, what is the value you chose?
What is one thing you can do this week to make you feel happy, proud or fulfilled with this value?

So, what is the value you chose?
I chose achievement
What is one thing you can do this week to make you feel happy, proud or fulfilled with this value?
I can be proud of myself by working hard in school
I chose the value courage. I can face things I have been putting off to fulfill this value.
Hi. I didn't read through the list of words, but what I value most are partnership and self-reliance. I like knowing that my partner always has my back, cares, and loves me, even when the rest of the world doesn't. I spent a long time alone, and having someone makes a difference in moving forward from the past. Self-reliance has been crucial for me to feel resilient against things that happened. I don't wait around hoping someone will help me. I do what I need to do. So does my partner. Then we really appreciate what we do for each other that much more.
@shellofashell
ooh partnership and self-reliance are super important! i'm so glad that you have your partner and they stick by you no matter what - that's so amazing. doing what you need to do without waiting on other people is also amazing and i definitely understand why that would make you appreciate what you do for each other that much more! thank you for sharing this with us!

So, what is the value you chose? : Balance
What is one thing you can do this week to make you feel happy, proud or fulfilled with this value?: Have a balance between my body and mind by doing yoga and deep breathing.
The value that I chose is kindness. I can perform a kind act for a stranger or loved one, go out of my way and do something nice for my family, or show myself some mercy and be kind to myself.
For me this is very hard as I could choose many, but I have chosen Awe Honour Thankfulness This is because I have had the great Honour of working beside some amazing staff and been able to support hundreds if not thousands of amazing people over the past 18months give or take to receive their vaccination. I am in complete awe of the people I worked with and the people I have met and supported to be able to have vaccinate them, and I am very thankful to have been part of the opportunity to do so.
I chose joy. I started reaching out to my nieces and nephews more this week. I have been so disconnected from them.
Think about times when you were the happiest.
Recently, I celebrated my 23rd birthday!
What were you doing?
Chilling at an Italian restaurant.
Who were you with?
My work friends who, I'd say, have been the very best company/social circle I've ever been a part of!
Were there any factors that contributed to this happiness?
Absolutely! The relief of not spending time at home for another quarantine birthday, like last year, the preciousness of reuniting with most members of the squad whom I hadn't seen in over a year, and the fact that we were able to live the moment🥺
@LilacKalypso9
happy belated birthday!! i'm so glad that you were able to spend your day with your work friends and that they're the best company/social circle you've ever been a part of! being able to spend your birthday some place that isn't at home and being able to live in the moment and see all those people after so long sounds so incredible!

So, what is the value you chose?
Determination
What is one thing you can do this week to make you feel happy, proud or fulfilled with this value?
Setting goals and achieving them no matter what
The value I chose was connection.
One thing I'm going to do this week is contact a few of my friends that I haven't talked to in a while. I have a very bad habit of being in my head too much and isolating myself, but these two friends share some of the happiest memories with me, so they deserve to be showered with love ^^
@cafedaydreams
this sounds so amazing! connection is super important, and reaching out to some of your friends who you haven't talked to in a while sounds like such an incredible way to fulfill that value! i'm so glad that these two friends share some of the happiest memories with you, and you deserve to be showered with love as well! thank you for sharing this with us!
