What do you feel is most misunderstood about depression?
A lot of times we deal with assumptions from other people, what do you feel is the most frustrating?
When you are depressed but it is not due to anything specific. It's hard to get people to understand that because they think depression has a direct cause.
@cSmith02
Exactly! Depression doesn't need a reason. It doesn't always even need a trigger. Sometimes it just turns on.
If have to say other people's perception of it. Like they think it's something we can just snap out of or that it has to be caused by something in particular. Its like people who don't have it just choose not to understand it.
That it's not just about crying all the time. I heard on NPR That robots are better able to spot depression than people, because those who are depressed actually smile MORE than non-depressed people. A lot of people with depression try very hard to hide it, and to 'fit in'.
Though I did used to cry a lot, when no one could see.
@Alia3475 Too true. before I had depression this boy in my class who has a class clown told me he had deprsssion for a year. He likes playing basketball and the piano. He told me that playing the piano makes him want to kill himself but for some reason he just cant stop. He said that people just expect him to just come to school every day and make jokes think that 'he has his life together. hes such a good pianist/basekt ball player. His grades are so good and yet hes fools around with and distractes his classmates. You can do much better.' But they dont know that the person who smiles the most is the most hurt.
Well, I was going to say something about my struggles. Why? I've initiated chats with a dozen persons. After one chat every one I've tried to contact again just appear to be too busy....over days or week. So I'm not sure the function of 7 is. I'm just an old guy with major to severe major depression for twenty years. I lost more than I care to mention and suffered more than I would have believed possible from depression. Alone.
the word "just"
just get over it
just go outside
just make some friends
just be happy
just do something that makes you smile
As if I've never thought to do those things and they can JUST be done at the drop of a hat.
The word just is unjust.
Personally, I feel that the most understood part of depression is how its not just about being sad. it is a lot deeper and some days people might look a litttle happier and that is questioned. Depression is different for everyone but it is not just about being sad or unhappy.
What are some of the beneficial coping mechanisms when dealing with depression?
I've been told that I should just be happy and that depression is just a mentality. Most people don't seem to understand that it's actually a medical condition, and not something you should joke about.
I think one fo the biggest misconceptions of depression is that only a certain type of people can get it. But the truth is that even if you're wealthy and you seem like you have it all together, you can still be depressed.
That depression feels like being sad when it really feels more like having the flu. People who haven't experienced them rarely understand the physical symptoms.
