Those who are undergoing/have undergone therapy, how was your experience?

Grrreywolf July 22nd, 2017

I'll be going to a therapist tomorrow for the first time, and I'm scared that it won't work. Can someone share their experience with me, please?

It took me a few different therapists to find one that I clicked with. But once I did, she was amazing and I stayed with her for five years on and off. (Life got in the way unfortunately.) And I did get better. The thing to remember is your therapist is there to help you, so if something isn't working, you can be direct about it. Also, I found it helped to be completely honest with her,even when I knew I screwed up or did something wrong. Change is hard, it takes alot of work. And it's so completely okay to be afraid. Being afraid means it matters.

@blueocean45 thank you. That encourages me. I do I hope I change though, because I feel like I'm the worst version of myself right now.

@Grrreywolf along with be honest. Try not to be hard on yourself if don't see changes. Sometimes even with Therapy it takes more than one try before things can change. You may not connect with the first therapist and it's okay, doesn't mean that something is wrong,It just means that you have to try again. I hope you get the help you are looking for and things get better for you soon smiley

@WendyBird15 thank you. :) just got back from a consultation with my therapist, and she recommended me to consult a psychiatrist as well because I need medication. But I feel good that I went.

@Grrreywolf

The first time I found out I was going to a therapist I thought it was stupid and that it wouldn't help. I did however, find the right therapist that had a connection with me. You may not like this therapist very much, but I promise you, that you can never ever go wrong with talking to someone new.

First, it's okay if you don't click with your first (or second or third) therapist! It's nothing wrong with you, and you have every right to try different therapists to find what works for you personally. You also may feel very shy with your therapist, but know they are there to help you, not to judge you. Feel free to say whatever you are feeling, and just talk about yourself. Look at it as a learning experience, because I'm sure you'll be able to take something away from it, and be open to it helping you

Just be honest.
