How do you visualise your depression?

Depression is one of the hardest things to explain to our loved ones, because it robs us of our very ability to communicate, and it's so easy to believe that it's a part of us, whereas in reality, it's something that stops us being us. How do you see your depression and what name do you give it?
I tend to view depression as a wave that pulls us under the surface of the water - we can see the surface, see the light, but it stops us swimming up to get there.

Studies, peer pressure, family differences. I get depressed as soon as I think about those three factors.
@Disneykstew
Definitely, lovely, those can all be definite factors that contribute to low mood! In terms of depression, if you've ever experienced it, how would you describe it to someone else, how do you make sense of it?

@Lyra
My depression blocks me from talking to others in a optimistic way. It's a barrier I need to overcome everyday to go to school but I'm mostly unsuccessful. My parents are mostly concerned about studies, they really can't take it easy if I get bad grades. I'm mostly lonely in the school since I have no friends. I criticise my almost all the time and I'm full of negativity, but thanks to 7 cups, I'm trying to cope.

@Lyra
I see my depression just as a constant dark cloud, which is not allowing me to think or see clearly. So even on days, where everything *appears* it should be fine, I still feel restless.
It's hard to explain the constant void, emptiness and apathy too.
I like the picture you posted, as that's exactly how depression can feel for me; even when trying to study or work or do anything productive, it's just a spiral of negative thoughts, unable to be moved or controlled.

@Lyra
I agree, i visulise it is a similar way... but as a dark fog.
The dark fog will always surround you but there are times when you can see certain light throught it. but you just dont know what way you are meant to go to get there.

I really identify with this tumblr blog (butthorn.tumblr.com) and how she describes her depression. Sharing her drawings with people have helped them understand sometimes what depression makes me feel.

I see it as me, but a shadow. Constantly following me around, whisper in in my ear, dragging me back, convincing me otherwise.

@Rologirl exactly. Like a shodow who is ur only friend. And the rest are dead.

I see my depression like a never ending darkness that I can't find away out of

I see my depression as this small dark bubble, that doesn't let anything come out but let's everything in and I can't prtotect myself from it and its suffocating me and there is no escaping it, because the moment I feel better its walls get thicker and I'm trapped in it and can't get out

I see my depression as an overwhelming darkness that is consuming all that I am, know matter how hard I try I can't seem to find the exit

Like a ghost sitting on ur shoulder and never letting u off.

Like a corridor. Sometimes it's light, and I think I can see a door at the end but then it's all pitch black and I'm stumbling around in the dark, terrified and trying to find anything to grab onto. Until I sometimes get too tired and loose all hope. Even when I find a light switch I know the darkness is just around the corner. While everyone else seems to have already made it through the door.
