Work is making me feel depressed

I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I got this new job and I’ve only worked here a month so maybe I need to give it more time but I find myself asking why did I accept this job? This isn’t what I want to do and I KNOW what I want to do in life. I accepted this job because I know office experience looks very good on a resume but then I realize in order for it look good, I have to put the time in.

im not sure if I can stay here a year. I don’t know why I took this job and rejected others in the process. This entire year has been filled with missed opportunities. I don’t know what is going on with me but I’ve turned down other jobs and positions that were so much more closely relate to what I wanted to do but my family and relationship kept telling me not. I don’t know why I listen to everyone but now I’m living someone else’s life, not my own. I just don’t know how to stop listening and letting everyone’s opinions influence me.

I hope that makes sense.

@drzombienoodles So, you know what you want, but you took on a job that isn't what you want because other people told you to. It might help me better understand if you were to write out what you want to do in life.

I want to work in the publishing industry with books and everything. Having office experience looks really good on a resume for this kinda job so I know this was a good chance to get experience. But I still hate it and I’m not sure what to do next.

@drzombienoodles ok, so it would look good on your resume to get into your dream job, but you hate it. Do you know how difficult it is to get into the industry you want to be in? I would research available jobs. If there are jobs there and you feel like you have a reasonable chance and you have a financial cushion to tide you over in case you go for months without a job, I would start applying to your dream jobs. There is no reason for you to be stuck and unhappy if you have a reasonable chance of getting out of that and into another job without risking homelessness or another worse disaster upon yourself. Get yourself out of that job if you can.

Hi @drzombienoodles

I’m really sorry you’re feeling like this. It sounds really tough to be in a job that doesn’t feel right, especially when you know what you truly want to do. It’s completely okay to feel regret and frustration about the decisions that brought you here, especially when they were influenced by others.

It’s a good sign that you know what you want and can recognize that this job might not be the best fit.

Maybe there are small ways to start moving towards your goals, even while you’re still in this role. It might be worth having a chat with someone at work to see if there are any projects or tasks that align more with your interests.

It’s also important to start trusting your own voice. You deserve to live a life that feels right to you. You’ve got this, and it’s never too late to make changes that align with what you truly want.

Take care, and remember to be kind to yourself.
