I’m in the market for a hobby. Suggestions are appreciated .

blueTurtle4179 November 5th, 2023

I’m 43 years old and for the life of me, I cannot think of a hobby that I can get into. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m in such a hole with my depression or because I barely know myself anymore. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

@blueTurtle4179 🤔🤔 how about some sort of woodwork? Or make your own comic? Or invent a new board game! Or learn a musical instrument. Possibly write poems, or photography. Candle making it resin crafts. You could write the next best selling book. Or join some sort of martial art group or a dancing or fitness group🤔🤔 pole dancing.

any of them sound good so far???

Decorating things with sharpie! It holds really well on a lot of materials especially canvas, like white hats or shoes and you can cover it with something like mod podge. I've done shoes, hats, phone cases, hair clips, and I'm testing if it works on softer fabric long term.

You could also do baking, perfect one cookie recipe, brownies (REALLY GOOD DESSERT: make brownie batter, and make peanut blossom dough, and then swirl them together and cook for about 40 minutes. SO GOOD)

Write music!

Learn an instrument!

Go forth and enjoy something that makes you feel like life isnt really that bad :) it's what you make it

Thank you for being here

I'm just going to say yoga because I got into by accident after a back injury and it changed my life. I wouldn't of otherwise done something like this. It's just around good for health and wellbeing

so far…all good suggestions! Now someone tell me how to go about mentally and emotionally and obviously physically doing things that make the start of a new hobby happen? Lol I’m one of those people who think about doing something and then when it’s time to execute said plan, I’m stuck. I’m also a collector of blank journals, planning supplies like pens, calendars, washi tapes, and I’ve mastered the process of collecting dust on them while I save posts on Pinterest related to the life I want to create and never actually do…😳

@blueTurtle4179 ohhh! That's a bit of a issue🤔🤔🤔🤔 maybe something that doesn't take much planning to start with🤔🤔 like being a movie critic, or a good critic, or pole dancing😁

@blueTurtle4179 you just Google local said hobby and go for it! Then deal with the rest later. One thing I will say is that you have to be prepared to do something for yourself without any doubt. People were nagging me for years to do yoga and I wasnt interested. If I would of give in to their nagging I never would of enjoyed it or stayed in it. I only started after a physiotherist said it's stretching everyday or eventually that I'd need surgery. So ultimately I was doing it for myself and not for the sake of shutting people up.

Long story short, find a passion for something and do it for your own sake, health and wellbeing ☺️ I hate to quote Nike.. But in this instance they are right. Right now, 'just do it' find something and just go for it 🤍

Personally I find accountability can go a long way in turning intention into action. Also setting aside a specific time where you are going to do something can help.

You mention the washi tape, pens, calendars, and notebooks, does that mean you were interested in making a bullet journal? Do you have an inspiration image or design you might want to emulate?

Ultimately I find if you set a goal, communicate that goal to others, and share your progress it can help with motivation. For example if I find a new crochet project I want to try, and then show the pattern or project to someone else, I feel more motivated to get started and show them how I do. Having others invested or interested in my hobby helps me stay invested when I don't feel like doing it just for me.

So, what are the things you've wanted to do but not followed through on?

It may be a simple thing, but I like to go for walks and hikes, and I use an app called Merlin that is a birdwatching app to listen to birds lol. It helps give me something to do on mental health walks as I look forward to finding different birds. :)
