Art supplies you love to use!
So I was looking to make a travel art set and I started thinking about whether I would put my best pens and paintbrushes in or not.
So I started thinking about whether Hobby Zone artists and wannabe artists (like me) could share tips and art supplies that you love to use and that won't be too expensive.
I am sure that around the world we all have different suppliers and prices so really just detailing the name and why you love it will help rather than giving links.
So I love to use sable similar brushes that are synthetic, they bounce, they hold lots of water and paint and really make my art a lot easier lol I don't like to use real hair brushes anymore now that I realise they are really animal, but the synthetics work well and also tail hair like goat hair bristle is something that a lot of people use.
What about your paints what favourite colors do you use? Tubes, solid pans or powders?
What about paper, what kind, what color, what coating? I use hot pressed for my flower studies and rough for landscapes.
So lets share and see how we get on.

Ooh, art supply talk 😀
I use watercolour personally, and for a travel set, I have a little Windsor and Newton tin, solid pans, that I top up (rarely needed) with tubes. I have a few greens, few browns, and the 'obvious' colours. I never ever use black paint. My grandma taught me nothing is ever pure black. Blue and brown mixed together makes a perfect black. So taking both black and white watercolour out allowed me two more colours. I picked colours useful for landscapes, because that's what I like to paint.
Always use rough for watercolour, and then hot pressed for sketching. If I am sketching and think I might want to add paint at a later date, always do it on rough just to make sure 😀
I have a teeny tiny sketchbook, probably 15cm by 6cm? And I keep that it day bags etc. you never know when you might want to sketch something. Often sketches are nicer memories than paintings as you remember your feelings and remember the act of drawing, I find.
I don't use my best things, I use completely separate things, but also never use cheap things, or things of low quality! You won't be happy with your work, and you never know when a practice will be a master piece!
Great post Misty! Hope your travel art set comes along nicely.
@SparklingSeashells I totally agree about black I use Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine blue, I don't think I even have a white but I do use white gouache as a top layer and splashes but also to thicken or thin other colours and make them less translucent.
Thanks for replying, lovely to hear from you!

I don't often paint, but I have all different kinds tubes, cakes, etc. Oddly enough I think the ones I like the most are my water colour pencils, I find they give me the control I want and let me focus on applying the right amount of water rather than worrying as much about colour/accuracy. Nice thing about my water colour pencils is that they are easy to take along with me, and I can use them even without any water, apply the colour and then add water another day/time. So I'm not sure if it exactly counts as painting but it is a balance I enjoy.
As for colours I enjoy, I like to mix a bit of violet and magenta to get one of my favourite shades of purple when I use the tube paints. In my acrylic paint set I have some lovely metallic blue and metallic purple, and the cerulean blue... I really love all the colours but my favourites tend to be purples and blues that have a hint of green to them. Trouble is I love all the colours until I try to paint something with them, I still want to do a paint pour one day but require a few more tools to do that.
As for paper it's usually whichever I have that is quality and suitable for the medium more than a specific preference.
