4) Team Lightship: Tweeting Empathy

SoulfullyAButterfly January 31st, 2021

In our introduction, we briefly understood an introduction to how social media-based marketing at 7 Cups uses a project called Team Lightship.

In this discussion, we will understand how the Lightship initiative works in terms of using tweets for spreading awareness, support, as well as 7 Cups content and other service information. We will also learn how the Twitter platform can be used to outreach to people requiring and in search of mental health support, in order to ensure that mental health is not ignored or stigmatized on social media.

(i) Using Tweets to Spread Awareness, Support, and Content/Service Information:

As previously discussed, the goal of Lightship is to use social media to reach out to those in need using kind and empathetic messages.

General tips include:

  • What you tweet about should reflect the compassionate, supportive, and kind community that 7 Cups is. Use your best judgment.

  • View your Team Lightship account as a force for good, and for spreading the 7 Cups mission and values.

  • Feel free to discuss emotions, situations, and topics that often occur on 7 Cups.

  • You might also want to post/retweet quotes or pictures, and that’s 100% okay! Just remember that reaching out to people should be a priority. Think of how social media graphics can be used in that sense, to engage people.

  • Note: Lightship uses referral links (found on your dashboard page under the list of chats) to direct users to the 7 Cups site.

Tips in regards to which areas or services of 7 Cups you can mention (apart from the general fact about 1:1 or group chats!): Self-Help Guides, Expert Articles, Free Mindfulness Exercises.

Sample Tweets:

Having a tough time? Don't keep it all inside. If you want to talk, we're here to listen 24/7 #7Cups https://www.7cups.com/17156123 #MentalHealthMatters

Need inspiration from people who have overcome Postnatal Depression? Read these stories of women using their recovery to aid others! https://www.7cups.com/experts/postnatal-depression-recovery

(ii) Using Twitter to Outreach People Seeking Support:

The following steps are helpful ways to identify and respond to people seeking support:

  1. Search for Keywords

Some keywords or hashtags can prominently help search for people in need of support.

Note: The following and other mental health-related tags on social media platforms can contain potentially triggering content.

  • Prominent Tags: need to vent, need a friend, feeling lonely, anxious, and depressed.

  • Other Tags Examples:

  • #depressed #anxious #depression #mentalhealth (high volume tags)

  • #needtotalk

  • #bullying

  • #chronicpain #chroniclife

  • #coping

  • #peersupport

  • #selfcare

Note: These keywords or hashtags can also be used in your own tweets to help ensure visibility and engagement.

  1. Reply to Tweets

After your search for important hashtags and keywords, when you find someone who has tweeted using one of those tags, and looks to be in need of support, reach out to them! Respond to their tweet with a message that includes information about how 7 Cups can support them.

Activity

Using what you learned about the Lightship protocol:

  1. Create one general hypothetical tweet that is supportive and compassionate.

  2. Respond to this Tweet using the outreaching tips:

3. Reply to one other student’s responses for both (1) and (2) and offer a review about their response: don’t forget to mention strengths as well as improvements they can make!

Please do not forget to personally save your activity answers as well as your reply to another user’s answer (recommended on Google Doc or other means) as you will be asked to share this for your Weekly Progress Report.

Fighting our battles in life is very exhausting and often makes us feel lonely and unheard🌻 Sometimes we just want to vent and let all these unknown emotions and feelings out and feel better. 7 cups (7cups.com) is a free mental health service where well trained listeners volunteer to listen to you and show you true compassion and kindness🌻#youmatter #youarebeingheard #mentalhealthmatters

2. Respond to this Tweet using the outreaching tips:

I can understand how overwhelming it can be when you go out during an ongoing pandemic and see people not following basic safety rules. You can always reach out to listeners at 7cups.com to talk more about your feelings🌻

Sometimes talking to a stranger is all one needs to feel better🌸

1) I love how well you've described what we offer here at 7cups. You've made it clear what this person can expect and showed lots of warmth and empathy in your opening sentence.I'm not 100% sure if it's too long?

2) Great empathy and labelling of the problem, I bet this person would feel heard just from your response. Again, you clearly state what sort of help we can offer which is great!

YourCaringConfidant February 12th, 2023

@cristlecares I love your tweet! You did a great job validating the person's emotion. You were very kind and empathetic and you are soooo right-- sometimes all we need is talking to a stranger to feel better. Your tweet was great for outreach and your response to the person was great, as well! Great job!

@gentleFox20

I really like your answers and how empathetic they are, great use of # and language.

My two observations would be spelling check on the response tweet and I think #covidsupport would not be the best hashtag to use as it will already be flooded with politics, government, and healthcare type of tweets, linking it closely to mental health like you did with #covidanxiety is great!

@guidamaximo I really liked socially distanced but emotionally connected line. Great hashtag or a caption to use. I really liked your choice of hashtags you have used.

Although I feel there are few grammatical errors, apart from which your responses were great.

(1) I really liked your tweet concept! It was concise and fit several relevant hashtags. I think I would prefer if at least one was within the main body of the tweet, rather than having them all at the end.
(2) I thought your response to the hypothetical tweet was good; it had a lot of empathy and the referral to 7 Cups felt very natural.

I liked how concise the tweet is and covers the most important aspects of the site. Same goes for the second tweet. Both the tweets are professional but the second one is empathetic too. For the second tweet, I think a link can also be mentioned so that it is easier for people to reach to the site.

Your tweets were actually insightful. Thank you!

It can be difficult to deal with anxiety related to such simple tasks during #covid times. You can find support at 7cups in 1:1 or group chats. We'd be glad to help https://www.7cups.com/ #anxiety #7cups #mentalhealth

@SunshineNaina some strengths is that I love how short and snappy both of them are! It is very clear. I also like how you emphasize and summarise the person's issue. One point for improvement could be a bit more detail on what 7Cups is but then again I feel like yours is pretty good anyway! Good job!

I like that you provide a link to a self-help guide on getting unstuck. Many people feel stuck, but don’t know how to get unstuck! Great resource and support!

In your response tweet I feel like you did a great job validating and empathizing with the person’s emotions around the pandemic. I also like how you described how 7cups can support them in their anxiety.

Honestly, I’m not sure what feedback I have for improvement. Tweeting is not my go to social media and I struggled to create a hypothetical tweet and response that was within the character limit that twitter allows. I really like the way you navigated that challenge by providing concise, yet useful information!

I like the use of a question to pique interest. Followed up by a great corresponding link and good hashtags. The reply tweet was compassionate and informal. I liked how you empathized with the tweeter. The only thing I would look to improve is that in Twitter's 'how to use hashtags' guide they recommend only using two hashtags. https://help.twitter.com/en/using-twitter/how-to-use-hashtags#:~:text=We%20recommend%20using%20no%20more,a%20Tweet%20as%20you%20like.

Great work! Looking forward to seeing more of you on the Forums.
