Anxiety with new therapists

I am about to go to a new therapist since my old one was too much money. I have a lot of anxiety around new therapists. I had a bad therapist a while back and she would get angry at me any time I did not know the answer to something. How do you become comfortable around a new therapist? What are things you all look for in therapists/ how do you open up to a person you do not know?

@RadiantDeer95

I can understand how you're feeling. The only way to know if you work together and what they're like is to experience a session with them. The control is in your hands - if you don't like them, then you should definitely try out a new one. It takes time to find one that can help you the best possible way!

I'm sorry about that previous therapist, they don't sound professional or helpful at all! I hope your new therapist is much better and it's normal to feel nervous/anxious beforehand. Therapists know it takes time for someone to open up to them, so they won't expect you to open up completely in the first sessioin. Be honest with them that you're feeling a little anxious about it - I'm sure they'll be supportive of you. Good luck!

@SilentSerenityy Thank you! Yeah I have a feeling that it will take me a while to find the right one, but knowing I have control makes me feel better.

@RadiantDeer95

You have to remember is you in control, not the therapist.

The bad therapist you had is exactly that, BAD! Therapists aren't supposed to pressure the patient! Things should go at your own pace. If you want to go slower, you can. If you struggle to aproach a topic right away, take your time, because you can.

When finding a new therapist you want exactly this, respect and control. Is very important you feel confortable.

Now of course in the beggining you'll always feel a bit awkward. But in the long run if you are confortable, if after each session you feel that you truly worked on things at your own pace, then that therapist is a good one.

I agree with all the previous comments stated above .

I'm sorry that happened to you .I've not experienced it myself personally so may not be best to advice on therapists but you have to find one what's right for you.

Your experience should be a good one where you can share in confidence to a therapist how you feel and gain experience in your journey by them being able to help at all times.

Just don't let this one bad experience effect you .

Hope that helps and good luck.
