Anxiety over intrusive thoughts, need advice

raspberryDog5868 April 1st, 2020

Hi, I'm reaching out on here because I can't really talk to anyone irl but I really need to ask about this. Starting a while ago, I found I would get an awful thought about "what if you did __". I know random thoughts are normal, but it just freaked me out. Even though I am absolutely 100% certain I would never do said thing and it will never happen, it just seems to keep replaying and it's freaking me out really bad. I looked it up and it seems this is "intrusive thoughts." My problem is it's to the point where it's starting to scare me and causing me a lot of unnecessary worry, even though I understand it's completely irrational and makes no sense to worry about it. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this because I really want to figure out how to handle this. Thanks

it's basically just you fighting your brain, which is acting like an annoying poltergeist sabotaging your happiness. Just remind yourself that those thoughts aren't part of you and your personality at all. i know from personal experience that it's so much easier said than done, but the more that you worry about it, the worse the thoughts get. You can't control your brain, unfortunately.

@dworth257 that makes sense, thank you. I've been trying to remind myself things like that, but sometimes I forget and I just focus on it too much and let it scare me. I appreciate the advice, I think I needed that reminder :)
