Recovery Awareness Month 🎉 Event 2
Journey of Recovery: The first step
"The journey of thousands of miles begins with a small step"
Hello! Welcome to addiction support community. This is the second event of Recovery Awareness Month.
In this forum post we will discuss the first step towards recovery. We would love to hear your story about the first step towards recovery.
A special thanks to @hounddog2021 (Mike) for helping me with this post. Thank you so much! 💕
The first step is never easy and it differs from person to person. Some are new in this journey, some might have restarted their journey after losing the exhausting battle, some might have been around and still working with their first step.
“We admitted we were powerless over our addiction – that our lives had become unmanageable.”
For those who are using or used the 12 Steps (clickable) in their journey often start from admitting and accepting this as the first step in their recovery.
On 7cups, no matter on which step you are in your journey of recovery or you're yet to start your quest for recovery, always know that we are here for you. ❤️
Since we are celebrating Recovery Awareness Month, I'd like all of you to participate in this event and in this forum discussion.
Feel free to answer any/all of the questions.
- What is/was your first step of recovery and how did you make it happen?
- What would you like to say (appreciate, encourage) to the fellow members on cups regarding the first step towards recovery.
- What's one thing which keeps you motivated in your quest for recovery?

Thanks for tagging, surprisingly I have found this quite hard to answer, hard to ‘pinpoint’ the first step……I guess everything got to a place where I did not recognise the person in the mirror anymore; nothing was left. I was fading and it was going to be all over, literally.
I took a day at a time, two years later I still am. Keeping faith and holding on to hope….hope in what could be and what life is all about.
Believe you can and your halfway there and don’t let go of what matters most. You have the strength within that you need, it will get harder before it gets better but the worst is all needing be left behind.
@tornwillow
Thank you so much for the answers!
I Understand how difficult it must be for you to pinpoint the first step when a lot of things happen at once and yet you decide to keep going on holding on to that one hope and that's why your journey is inspiring for us❤️ Your journey is definitely not easy and I can't even imagine how painful it is to feel like you're fading. Despite all those difficult situations, I'm so happy to see you here!
"hope in what could be and what life is all about."
This is a beautiful quote by you❤️ for all the members of Addiction Support Community! Life goes on and its true that this moment is inevitable but the next moment could be changed and that is where we can put our hope ❤️
Thank you so much for believing in yourself.
@tornwillow
oh willow you said it so perfectly. Thank you so much for participating in our day two event. I couldn’t agree even more with you so beautifully spoken. I felt the hurt but I also felt the progress and you are trying. Without recognizing where our lives stand in a certain place or observing what path we should take, we feel stuck(unmanageable) powerlessness is just what you make it unfortunately , we may be powerless over certain outcomes but we are not powerlesss in our choices until we make the wrong step and don’t have that line anymore. Again thank you for sharing <3
I can relate to what you said completely willow I also didn't know who I was in the mirror neither did I want to look in a mirror.
@dtanushree
- What is/was your first step of recovery and how did you make it happen?
To recognize my low self esteem and my patterns of codependency, always seeking answers and comfort in other people and not in myself. I read a book about it, followed the instructions and wrote memories that had connection to the topic.
- What would you like to say (appreciate, encourage) to the fellow members on cups regarding the first step towards recovery.
It gives a new perspective of yourself, and it is basic to keep growing recovery. Trying to recover is a bless, you always win.
- What's one thing which keeps you motivated in your quest for recovery?
To see how much I learned just writing and also meeting fellows once a week. It works if I work.
@mary31

Thank you for the appreciating words you have shared with the addiction support community 😊 The journey of recovery does help us to see ourselves from a different perspective!
