I am a alcoholic I drink until I black out I had an episode last week. But I currently 5 days sober now I did have urges to drink a few days ago but I didn't drink I am proud of myself I really do hope to continue on my sobriety from alcohol. It's hard I come from an alcoholic family I had few family deaths in the past two years from them drinking everyday. I tend to get my urges when I am stressed or depressed and I would drink my pain away because that's all I ever saw. But when I black out I'm an angry drunk or I wonder off and have people worried don't know where I am and have family and friends look for me. So I will try to check in as much as I can and have this post help remind me to stay sober and fight the urges when I get them. I been sober twice from alcohol 1st time was for 2 years and the 2nd time was for 6 months last year.

Hi, Native,

God bless you. I am an alcoholic and it is a daily struggle not to drink, but you can do it. Every day you stay away from alcohol is a day better than drinking alcohol.

I started doing something that works for me. I didn't know what it was called but my therapist told me it is called harm reduction. It is an alternative to alcoholics anonymous. This is how it goes...if you can regularly drink only one day per week, then you are reducing the harm that alcohol is doing to you. It may sound ineffective to some alcoholics, because not all alcoholics can control their drinking that way. I understand them and sympathize with them. But it works for me.

I pick a day of the week when I don't have to work in the morning, and stick to that day. For a while it was Friday for me. Every day, I would ask myself, can you wait until Friday to drink? Then you can have as much as you want. I found that I could wait one week to have drinks.

Once you master that, start to limit how much you drink on that one day. No drinking until after a set hour. I picked 5pm. Then no more than one shot every hour and 1/2. For me, it works. If it doesn't work for you, don't feel bad. Everything doesn't work for every body.

Did you know that alcoholics anonymous has meetings online? Go to their website and search for online meetings. I did that for a while, too. They're good people.

I wish God to send all his blessings to you.

@ambitioushope1234

God bless you Hope.

And you can stretch out the time between drinks even longer. If you can eventually master waiting two weeks or three weeks or longer, all the better.

Congratulations for staying sober for long stretches of time. That's admirable. :)

Hey folks forgot to check in last night but 1 week sober I was watching movies and tv with the wife all night. I try to stay sober and if I relapse I'll try the pick one day to drink and limit how much to drink. Hard liquor brings the worse out of me. When I did maintained my drinking all this year expect from big episode recently in the post I was doing fine I was only drinking 1-3 beers wouldn't get drunk but have a very lil buzz due to my hight tolerance because I drink, not that I am proud of that it's my biggest down fall. The alcohol doesn't fully effect me til hours later and that could mean I drink for 8-12hrs. I still can get drunk off of beer as well if I drink a very lot of them. I do like to have a occasional drink to celebrate an anniversary with my wife or holidays. But for right now I want to see how long I can stay sober. If I do relapse which I try my very hardest not too I will only drink a beer. I know hard liquor and me are not a good mix. I don't plan to drink today and will not. It's something that me and my wife would have to talk about together since I do became a mess at times. It's not just me that it effects it effects her. I'll do another check in later today which will be at night.
