There is a lot to unpack in Chapter 2 and 3. Denial and distraction keep us unaware and stuck in patterns that are not particularly good for us as individuals or communities. In this discussion and others, I'm mostly interested in what you think and the type of ideas that we collectively surface as a group. And a quick note that there are no bad or wrong answers here - the important thing is to share ideas and learn together. ÃÂ
Please read chapters 2 and 3 and then answer the following questions:
1. How would you define denial in your own words? ÃÂ
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Please add the following message to the button of all discussion posts
After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

@GlenM
1. How would you define denial in your own words?
Denial - not accepting some things that i need to accept I do not really wanna process things that are not really good .. denying that I am sick or someone is sick or that we will never die or our loved ones wont. The core process we all experience - We will face illness and death and so much more.. Denial is like a protection sheild but we do have to face the reality .
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
That they are not where they need to be and still out there and we are figuring them out non stop instead of being automatically doing .. a learned skill and doing it without really thinking about things.. it stays on the surface not in the core.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
1.Food - People feel better when they feel full with the food that helps distract from what we need to face... eating good things we love when we are depressed, anxious etc.. makes us happy for a short time so then we eat again when an emotion hits.
2. Internet - Social Media sites !! The biggest way to hide from things we need to face .. helps to distract how we are feeling and not facing things not having to deal and seeing others dealing with things can affect us in a good way or a bad way.. It does become an addiction there are so many social media places and millions on them everyday all day feeding their minds with so much stuff and not facing what we need too .. So unhealthy !!
3. Games online- I am old school but i see so many talking about playing online games and apps and spending money on these games and not facing their problems and spending hours upon hours playing not going to school not wanting to work.. They are not healthy at all unless you are someone who can control the addiction just as the others listed... Kids are staying online when they are not out playing and doing sports and enjoying the outdoors.. Adults also same thing... Games can be really distrubing depending on which games but all need to be in moderation..
The Internet is the biggest issue!! People are stuck to cell phones, laptops, tablets and not seeing their family or friends and getting more and more unhealthy physically and mentally..
I know I have my own distractions and not facing things ..
Cell Phones stuck to everyones face .. I am so glad i did grow up when i did .. I am guilty i do own a smart phone and laptops and tablets and smart watches.. thankfully not until like 10 years ago and I am soon to be 55 !

@Tyedyedbutterfly65 great answer!
1. How would you define denial in your own words?
When you try to convince yourself something isn't true.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
Things that occur outside your awareness are things that could be a learned behavior.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
(1) Social Media - in my opinion, social media is one of the most powerful distractions! We are living in the digital age and being able to talk to people in an instant, search and watch any videos and scrolling through pages designed to appeal you - all at our fingerprints is truly a dangerous thing that can get you super distracted.
(2) Family/Friends/People - When being surrounded by people you may feel different emotions that can distract you. For example, you might spend the entire time wanting to socialize or the entire time worrying if you look weird.
(3) Food - sometimes people may get hungry and spend more time in the kitchen wondering what to eat instead of just grabbing something, people may also get distracted especially if they watch something while eating!
@softMusic9759
So true! Thank you for this.
@softMusic9759
Wonderful answers, Music
@softMusic9759
Keep up the good work :)
@softMusic9759
Social Media came in a close second for me on my top 3 distractions. There's just so much we have access to and it's not all healthy for us. Thanks for your insight!
@GlenM
the denial it, we do not can when we do not dare, or do not want to watch with certain things, situations
Things that occur outside your awareness are things that could be a learned behavior.
the media, the on-line world, our direct environment may be distracting for example. I believe it, it is possible to divert his attention difficultly if rather strong principles, self-image, morals are at the man's disposal. When the man believes in himself, it what he makes, then difficultly can be diverted his attention. Has all effects on us, even a change of thing appearing insignificant.
@Mankka
That s a lot! Thank you for that insight.
@Mankka
Great answers, Mankka Thanks for sharing with us Wish you the best in your journey ahead
@Mankka Nice answer!
@GlenM
Hi! How are you?
I think denial is ignoring, avoiding and / or not accepting the truth.
I learned that it can be, without us knowing it, a learned, damaging system. That it can hurt us from the shadows.
I think they are the school, the on-line life, and the wealth. I think the wealth is the most powerful one, because you may think that that s what you need to be happy, but you end up with power, an unhappy life, and a lot of non-sense paper.
@Daf8
"I learned that it can be, without us knowing it, a learned, damaging system. That it can hurt us from the shadows." Love it. Best line. A lot of nonsense paper, haha I like that phrasing.
@rebecca947
Awww, thank you! Knowing that you are a wonderful person, I bet that you also have great lines! Thank you for your words
@GlenM
1. How would you define denial in your own words?: Denial is blocking out the truth and refusing to be aware of the reality of the situation
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?: Can be a learnt behaviour
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?:
1) Social media
2) Internet
3) Mobile phones, tablets etc
All three are powerful but the most powerful one is social media because it basically rules our life and we are at the risk of depression, eating disorders etc since we compare our lives to others
@azuladragon34
Nicely worded re denial definition!
@azuladragon34 I liked your answer! Nice and short.
@GlenM
1. How would you define denial in your own words?:
Denial is a defense mechanism which involves a refusal to accept reality
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
Can be a learnt behaviour
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?:
1) Social media
2) Employement
3) food
Social media , as it has resulted in social aloofness in real world, and affects out thoughts n opinions the most
@blissart
A refusal behaviour- I like that summarised definition. I agree that social media is indeed an extremely powerful distraction- the more access to things and information, the more we are swamped and distracted from what's most important.
1. How would you define denial in your own words?
Purposefully being unaware of the situation around you or the things happening.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
It's a learned behavior!
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?:
Social media, food, phones, laptops, etc...
I think all of the these are important, but social media has the most impact. It gives us a perspective on other people's lives and makes us feel self-conscious about our own.
@smolecho
I like how youdefined denial, denial being a deliberate action we doo, consciously or subconsciously. I think everyone would agree that social media is one of the biggest distraction systems we have currently.
@smolecho
Liked your answer :)
@GlenM
1. How would you define denial in your own words?
I would define denial as not accepting the truth about something.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
They are hidden markers and clues about what we can next do in our lives.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Unhealthy food, toxic people, and internal mental strife like repression - they make us work harder to utilize our cognitive resources, but it would be easier to manage items if barriers like toxic food, people and the self are managed more effectively.
@SynSavory
The most profound might be toxic people, since they can disrupt us across many avenues.
@SynSavory
Very true about what you said in point 3- it would be much easier if they weren't there. But hey, that's part of life's challenge haha
@SynSavory
Good job :) <3
1. How would you define denial in your own words?:
Denial in my words is the refusal to accept reality, accept the change, or accept the truth.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
We can't control the things happening outside of our awareness or the unconscious but we for sure can control our reaction, our attitude, and our perspective towards them. And for me, that is what creates a difference.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?:
For me, The top 3 distraction systems are:
1. Books
2. Any creative hobby
3. Extreme Grief/Happiness
For me, all of them are very powerful and it depends on the circumstances which one prevails.
For eg, Once I start a good book, I won't see the time. I will promise myself, this is the last chapter but I will read the next one as well and so on.
Similarly, once I start painting, I can actually go on until the whole canvas is completed and spend an entire day if no one interrupts me.
So, a creative hobby can be a great distraction.
Last but not the least, extreme grief or happiness. It prevents you from making rational decisions and forces you to stay stuck at times and that is a very powerful distraction once again.
(I know most people here mentioned Social Media but I am not on any social media sites like insta or FB but I do agree with their opinion that it is one of the most powerful distraction tools right now)
@VerseArt
Denial is indeed the opposite of acceptance! Very true that it depends on circumstances and context- I feel that everything does and it's a good reminder to have. Nothing exists in a vacuum! As for extremes, that too. We need a balance in life- if not, something suffers and is off kilter.
@VerseArt
"We can't control the things happening outside of our awareness or the unconscious but we for sure can control our reaction, our attitude, and our perspective towards them. And for me, that is what creates a difference."
I absolutely LOVE this response. To still exhibit accountability for self is important because we indeed do have control over how we react to certain situations. Thanks so much for saying this!
@GlenM
1. Denial - It's the act of not accepting accoutability or responsibility after actively being confronted with an issue/concern.
2. Things that occur outside our awareness are things which could be a learned behavior.
3. Our jobs, our devices, and our circle (good and bad! Good people reaching out at the wrong time can cause distraction, too!).
@CompassionateDreamer8522
Denial being a deliberate action, I love your definition. Very true that timing needs to be right for it to not be a distraction! A distraction in and of itself is something that comes into our awareness at a bad time and takes our focus away.
