Happy Autism Awareness Day! April 2nd is an International day marked for proper understanding of Autism, acceptance of those on the Autism spectrum and for fostering worldwide support and inspiring people to take a stand on Autism Awareness.

The 17 sustainable development goals developed by the United Nations as a blueprint for addressing the major challenges facing the world, including inequality. The pandemic in 2020 has exacerbated the issue of inequalities in Education. Students with autism have been especially affected with the disruptions in routines, as well as the services and support they rely on.

In this respect, the SDG’s echo the UN convention on the Rights Of Persons With Disabilities. Article 24 of the convention states that people with disabilities have the right to inclusive, quality education on equal basis with others and that reasonable accommodation of the individual’s needs be provided.

That is why the theme of this year’s Autism Awareness Day is ‘Inclusion In The Workplace’ which emphasizes how important it is for people on the autism spectrum to receive quality education so they can fulfill their potential and have success in the labour market.

On this day, April 2nd we stand for inclusivity in all aspects of life including but not limited to Education, Healthcare, Work and Career, etc.

To read more about the United Nations efforts to ensure inclusive education, visit https://www.un.org/en/observances/autism-day

Support plus is an awesome sub-community with focus on Autism, ADHD, OCD, Hoarding disorder, BDD, and Dermatillomania, Trichotillomania & Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRB ).They made an awesome post about autism acceptance month which you read HERE.

In celebration of Autism Awareness Day 2022, we asked members of the disability support and support plus on the autism spectrum, about their personal experiences with living with autism with the aim of learning from them, and understanding them better.

These will also be the first set of interviews in the new interview series called "Inclusivity Diaries".

@MyNameIsNicole I don’t have autism personally but I’ve met people who do have it and honestly I want to help them not feel so alone in the struggle. I feel like no one in this life has to suffer whether it be physically or emotionally. I suffer from a lot of health issues but I always put others before myself. I care about everyone I meet even if they don’t like me.

As an Aspie, person with Asperger's, I am so thankful for people like you. We cannot do this on our own and it is nice to see others who are willing to stand by our side and bring awareness to this.❤️

May I suggest please don’t use autism speaks as a link for this post..?.. The organization takes money from autistic people and is not in support of us, rather they are against us.

@MyNameIsNicole Hi Nicole, thanks for sharing! I have been made aware that Autism Speaks is not an accurate and a very ableist organization. Would love to see more nonprofits made by autistic people shared on the forum.

I have updated it with a different link, shared my @sunshinegiraffe123 on her post in the SP+ forum.

Ice-breaker: What are things you didn't know about autism before?

😈 I am autistic! I know so much about it as I experience it. The other night, I was nearly having a meltdown over being able to hear my devices charging, electricity is loud ;-; my ears are pretty sensitive. Also, stimming, stimming is so great, even for my anxiety : D I also absolutely hate jeans, but I can wear denim shorts.. I know same material.. but like, it’s made different. I am a person with sensory issues, I do get overwhelmed. But the thing I love about my autism is, that it lets me see things differently, I am a really good problem solver because of it 😮 and I’ve always been a problem solver.

And I agree with @sunshinegiraffe123 with the autismspeaks link, that company is literally neurotypical monsters to many people with autism out there, they are known for many terrible things and yeah, they aren’t the most reliable source. And with what I said, many and many other neurodivergent people will absolutely agree. www.autism-society.org - What is Autism - this might be a better link 💕

Hey Emo! Long time no see! Thank you for sharing your experience with us! I can totally understand where you are coming from. I struggle myself sometimes being able to hear electricity. Other days complete silence alone is enough to bother me and I have to have music on.

I struggle more with textures of foods in my mouth than feeling different textures but I still struggle sometimes. There have been many days where I wear sweatpants to class instead of jeans because otherwise I wouldn't be able to focus on my work.

I agree that autism can bring about good things. I am also a problem solver and often I come to the same conclusion as others but in my own unique way. For example, my math homework the one day was too easy so I made it more complex while still arriving at the same answer. I play a lot of word and brain games on my phone to keep my mind sharp and brain constantly challenged.

@wonderfulRainbow817

yes, long time no see indeed ^-^ How have you been?

I am also the same with certain food textures.. I remember trying pavlova on Christmas, and I just couldn’t eat it >_< it was such a bad experience. And I’m always listening to music XD especially to keep my brain quiet as it is literally my biggest bully 😀

Ice-breaker: What are things you didn't know about autism before?

I used to believe that autism trait can be over sensitivity to sound but for some it can be under sensitivity.

I used to believe signs of autism were obvious but still so much to learn.

1 reply
wonderfulRainbow817 April 3rd, 2022

@GoldenRuleJG, I am glad this has helped you learn a little bit. While there can be general traits of Autism it doesn't mean everyone experiences that. That's why it is important to remember that when you've met someone with Autism you've truly only have met one, not all

@MyNameIsNicole another misconception I had to as that people with autism find eye contact challenging but not all do or that they can come across really outgoing but some can be really shy

4 replies
emotionalTalker2260 April 3rd, 2022

@GoldenRuleJG

some autistic people struggle with eye contact, I used to be one of them (I mean, I used to not even look in the person who I was speaking to’s direction.. let alone their face.) 😊 but there is people out there who don’t make eye contact because it is actually painful for them. Some people have their days where eye contact is more difficult then others.

Hi Nicole! Even though I'm a little late, happy autism awareness day! What a great way to spread the word about autism, and to show that everyone is equal—our obstacles aren't limitations, but unique exceptionalities that we should all take to heart. 😊
