Thoughts on changing careers later in life?
Hello,
I'm currently a funeral director, which has been great so far, but I'm not sure it's what I want to do forever. As a kid, I've always played music and really had a knack for it! I'm self-taught on a lot of instruments, but at the beginning of this year I decided I wanted to study cello in a non-degree program. It has been a great hobby so far and am in love with the instrument, but it got me thinking—what if I pursue this more seriously and okay professionally in an orchestra pit? It would be my dream job! Does anyone else here have any thoughts or experience with this? If so, please share your stories and/or advice!

I can imagine that it can be challenging to make a career change, especially when you've already invested time and effort into a different field. But, I do feel everyone deserves to follow their passions and what makes them the happiest. Performing in an orchestra pit sounds so cool as well!💜
I'm a career changer myself and the only advice I can give it's: don't wait, just do it. When I was younger I made a decision based on my lack of self-esteem and then I spent the following 20 years regretting it and just thinking "what if I had tried..." . After 20 years, I decided I wanted to try and guess what? I know now my lack of self-esteem was silly but it's quite late and my brain is tired, life is harder and my motivation isn't always up high. So my experience tells you, if you want to change just do it before it's too late. You'll figure it out eventually and you can always go back. Sorry for the rant...
That's awesome! Just keep in mind that the music industry can be competitive and financially unpredictable. Before making any big decisions, do your research and consider the financial implications. It might be a good idea to start playing in local orchestras or ensembles while continuing to work as a funeral director. That way, you can gain more experience and build your network in the industry, while also maintaining a stable income. Ultimately, do what makes you happy, but make sure you have a solid plan in place to achieve your goals. Best of luck to you!
I think that you should just follow what you feel is right for you! It’s okay to change careers no matter your age. You just have to make sure to be prepared and take caution! I hope that you can pursue your passion! Good luck

Yes i thought of changing my career after break and change but due to lack of confidence i could not make it that extend i can earn or stable
Like someone said i too feel tired as my health sometime don't support. So i gave up working on it much. Yeah sometime i look back and feel i wish i had continue in same field.
I had seen many switch their career and are happy also. As they are ready for all outcome. At this stage we are wise enough to take decision not just on passion. So i believe you would success in your passion.
Good luck.
I am thinking of a career change myself at some point. I really want to be a therapist and be the person my 7 Cups therapist was for me! I don’t know when the right time to start is exactly, but hopefully I’ll start as soon as possible! 😜😉
@PestoPasta8973 Well, if music is your passion, and you love the cello, then why not try it?
I think it is better to try, and see how things go, then to wait, and sit back, and later wonder "what if?"
I wish you all the best in whatever you pursue!
Hi pasta!
I have recently changed my career because I needed financial help. Not only that I have transitioned from having a business to getting a job. It was a huge change. But if it is something you are ready for, then it becomes easier. The only thing I wanted to tell you is that even when I was searching for a job, I was careful to pick something that I can perform well at. So that there is a future in it and it won't be a whim. As long as it something that you see yourself doing for a long term period, go for it. Plus it is also your passion! My business is my passion and despite all the issues I still haven't closed it. I wish you all the best in your change and in your life!
