I've been though a lot personally and have come out the other side being better for it and having learned a lot about myself, my own emotions and how people tend to feel in general. Empathy is my strong-point and I think it's one of the most important traits someone can have. Sometimes it's difficult to find someone to listen as I know from my own experiences that can be one of the worst things which is why I decided to be a listener so I can be that person I wish I had in my hard times.
