The butterfly challenge is you draw a butterfly on your wrist and for how long it lives you can't self harm because you'd be killing the butterfly.

There are many different 'alternatives' to self-harm that someone may use when they are recovering from a self-harm addiction. A common alternative is to draw where you would want to harm, and this can help some people to work through self-harm urges. The Butterfly Project encourages people to draw butterflies - as each butterfly is a symbol of courage, hope and a new start. The butterfly can also stop someone from cutting where they have drawn it - as it can be motivating to allow the butterfly to fade on its own. Whilst the butterfly project may be seen as 'beautiful' (and don't get me wrong - it is a lovely idea) let's not forget that self-harm is a symptom of emotional pain and that people who are going through this deserve both help and support. Self-harm is not beautiful, but recovery can be.
When you feel like you want to cut, take a marker, pen, or sharpies and draw a butterfly on your arm or hand. Name the butterfly after a loved one, or someone that really wants you to get better. You must let the butterfly fade naturally. NO scrubbing it off. If you cut before the butterfly is gone, you've killed it.

Everytime when you want to hurt yourself you draw a butterfly on your skin. Every butterfly represents a person you love and when you hurt yourself again this butterfly dies
The Butterfly Project (also known as the Butterfly/Phoenix Project) is an organisation dedicated to helping young people deal with mental health issues, including self harm.
The Butterfly Project can be an extremely helpful resource for those who self harm. When the urge to self harm arises a person is to draw a butterfly where they would normally self harm, then name it after a loved one or someone important to them. Should they self harm before the butterfly fades (it cannot be washed off) the butterfly 'dies'. This is an interesting representation of the affects of self harming behavior on those the individual loves.
I shall just post the rules.... as its a beautiful project. =]
1. when you feel like you want to cut, take a marker or pen and draw a butterfly wherever the self-harm occurs.
2. name the butterfly after a loved one, or someone that really wants you to get better.
3. NO scrubbing the butterfly off.
4. if you cut before the butterfly is gone, it dies. if you don't cut, it lives.
5. another person may draw them on you. these butterflies are extra special. take good care of them.
6. even if you don’t cut, feel free to draw a butterfly anyways, to show your support.

It is where you draw a butterfly wherever you want to cut, and if you do cut, the butterfly dies. If the butterfly fades naturally, no scrubbing it off, you have set it free.
The Butterlfly Project helps people which are herming themselfes. How it works is, that a person draws a butterfly onthe hand arm of the person which is harming hisself. You have to say when you harm yourself, the butterfly will diw. I want you to protect it and take good care.

If you cut before the butterfly is gone, you’ve killed it. If you dont cut, it lives.
If you have more than one butterfly, cutting kills all of them.
Another person may draw them on you. These butterflies are extra special. Take good care of them.
Even if you don’t cut, feel free to draw a butterfly anyways, to show your support. If you do this, name it after someone you know that cuts or is suffering right now, and tell them. It could help.
It's for people who are trying to stop to self harming. You draw a butterfly on where you normally self harm and if you self harm before the butterfly washes out you killed your butterfly. Keep drawing butterflies each time you want to self harm, it really helps to stop.

The Butterfly Project is a project (for lack of a better word) that is designed to help someone stop self harming. Here's how it works: When you get the urge to self harm, you take out a pen or a marker of some sort and draw a butterfly where ever you feel like harming. You give your butterfly a name, often one of someone you love or who wants you to get better. You then wait for the butterfly to naturally fade. You aren't allowed to try to scrub it off. If you cut before it's gone, you've killed it. If you stay clean, the butterfly lives. Once it's faded, don't just relapse. Draw more butterflies until the urges are all gone.
May all your butterflies live my lovelies.
The Butterfly Project is something that is designed to help those who struggle with self-harm. The idea is that the person draws a butterfly somewhere on themselves and they name it after someone in which they care about and wouldn't want to hurt. It is to try and help the person overcome the urge to self-harm without actually causing any injury to themselves.

The Butterfly Project is a way for people who struggle with self-harm to prevent hurting themselves. When you feel like hurting yourself, the goal is to draw a butterfly in the area you wish to harm. You need to name the butterfly, preferably after a loved one or someone who cares about you. Write the name under the butterfly. If you decide to hurt yourself, the butterfly dies. If you don't hurt yourself, the butterfly lives. It helps in reminding you that there are people who care about you and the butterfly is a symbol for that.

It's basically something to help you stop self-harming. You draw a butterfly, anywhere on your body and if you self-harm you kill the butterfly and you can't wash it away, it has to fade away. And when it does you have made it that long without hurting yourself.

I am pleased that you wish to learn more about this, you can find information on the butterfly project through this link..http://butterfly-project.tumblr.com/ I hope this helps in some way if you are needing help in any way
The Butterfly Project is a project to help people stop hurting themselves. Each time you feel like hurting yourself you take a marker or a pen and draw a butterfly on the place you wanted to harm instead to harming it. You can't scrub the butterfly and if you hut the place where you draw it before the butterfly is gone, it dies. You can name your butterflies after loved ones so it will be harder to hurt the place.
I absolutely love the idea behind the Butterfly Project. It is aimed to help people who self harm. They draw a butterfly on where they normally hurt themselves and it fades away naturally- if not the butterfly is essentially dead. It works for some but not others like myself but the idea is very amazing and definitely a better alternative.
The Butterfly Project is for people who suffer from self-harm but feel they want to stop it. It's for them in case they need support. The beauty of thes project is that they encourage the self-harmer to draw a butterfly at the place that they harm themselves if they did not hurt themselves until the butterfly faded it is said that the butterfly lived and flown away.
It's for people who self harm whenever you want to cut use a marker/pen and draw on yourself. It has 7 rules

The butterfly project is a self-harm project, most people draw the butterfly on their wrist and say that if they cut, the butterfly dies. there is more than one way to do this project though.
The butterfly project is to help those who self-harm. Whenever you want to self-harm, you draw a butterfly where you want to hurt yourself. If you self-harm, you have killed all the butterflies you've drawn. It helps to stop the urge, or prevent you from hurting yourself.
The Butterfly Project has been created for self-harmers who feel they are ready to stop and need the motivation or support to do so.
basically, people will draw a butterfly on their wrist to show support for self harm. the basic gist of it is to wait until the drawing washes off to see if you still want to self harm, but anyone can draw a butterfly to show their support.
The butterfly project is the idea that you draw butterflies where ever you cut. You name them. But if you cut you kill the butterflies. It's an anti-self harm project
