What is a habit?

A habit is... 

  • a well-learned behavior that has become...
    -------------- 
  • a reflex-response to a specific situation so that...
    -------------- 
  • after it has formed... it can be done with little or no attention.

How does a habit form in the brain to become automatic?

  • It all starts with your deliberate awareness and repetition
    -------------- 
  • Your brain programs itself to do the task for you
    -------------- 
  • Then you can do it almost automatically with minimal thought
    -------------- 
  • The more you repeat the task consistently,
    the better and faster the brain programs it

Even complicated tasks can become made automatic...
if they are made of many small tasks or habits.

  • That's how you can drive while intensely listening to the radio

  • Many small already learned habits do the driving for you

What can become a habit?

Any behavior that is... 

  • consistently repetitive and...
    --------------
  • doesn't require much thinking

-------------- 

Just repeat it over and over long enough -- very consistently -- and it can form in the brain as a habit.

The keys to success in habit-building are...

  • Design the habit first... so it's very tiny... and then...
    --------------
  • Repeat it consistently until it "takes-root"

So... What cannot become a habit?

  • Something that changes a lot
    -------------- 
  • Something that needs a lot of thinking and decision-making
