5 Essential Tips for Women Coping With ADHD
by comfortableNight4463
Last post
November 26th
...See more "Here are five key facts you should know about women and ADHD: * Women are underdiagnosed because they are more prone to mask and internalize their symptoms (hypersensitivity, ruminating, distracting thoughts) rather than display outward symptoms like hyperactivity or impulsivity, although those can manifest as well. * Because women are expected to be nurturers, they often overcompensate for their ADHD with people-pleasing and perfectionism, exhausting themselves further. * During perimenopause and menopause, women can develop ADHD symptoms for the first time–or exacerbate preexisting ADHD symptoms–which show up as brain fog, memory difficulties, increased agitation, and difficulty completing tasks. * Due to a lack of diagnosis and treatment for women with ADHD, they can develop secondary behaviors to cope with, such as eating disorders, casual sex, overspending, and symptoms of depression and anxiety. * Many women with untreated ADHD struggle with emotional regulation and develop rejection sensitivity syndrome, leading to relationship challenges, isolation, and shame. Here are five essential ways women can cope: * Make sleep a non-negotiable. Develop a bedtime routine that you enjoy. Use a weighted blanket to give your body containment. Turn on white noise to soften your brain’s tendency to respond to sensory stimuli while asleep. * Recognize how ADHD impacts your relationship with food. Many women with ADHD use food as comfort or as stimulation. Avoid refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, and foods high in the glycemic index, which increases brain fog. Consult with your doctor regarding taking Iron, Magnesium, and Zinc to help regulate brain chemistry. * Consider hormone therapy. Changing hormonal levels have a number of effects on the brain. During perimenopause and menopause, there is a decrease in estrogen, which regulates important neurotransmitters such as dopamine (executive functioning), serotonin (mood regulation), and acetylcholine (memory), causing the onset of ADHD-like symptoms. * Nurture your sensitivity and internalized trauma. Work with a somatic psychologist to incorporate the body into your healing journey and create a self-regulation practice. Exercise and embodiment are essential to release old trauma from the body, developing day-to-day self-agency, and cultivating more confidence and clarity. * Communicate to your partner about your unique needs. Many women with ADHD struggle with listening, can be forgetful (or never heard it in the first place!), and have a quick temper, leading to communication breakdowns with a partner. Incorporate movement, such as walking together, to help with focus during important discussions. Give your partner context about your sensory issues. Know that it’s essential to set boundaries so you aren’t burning out behind a mask of pleasing others and perfectionism to try to compensate. Have a plan to divide and conquer when it comes to household management. Understand that although you might disappoint others sometimes in order to take care of yourself, in the long run, you will feel better and have more to give." ...See more Music has an incredible power as a therapeutic tool. It can boost our mood, help us relax, or provide an outlet for emotions we can't put into words. In times of stress or uncertainty, music can be a comforting companion, a source of motivation, or simply a way to escape for a while. This led us to think on ways we can celebrate music as an entire community and we came up with the idea for a spotify playlist. We collected your song suggestions in this post [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/SoulfullyAButterflysContentGarden_2136/CallingAllMusicLoversContributetoOurOfficial7CupsSpotifyPlaylist_312097/] and have been adding them over the past few weeks. Here it is! [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1BF1LfgHuY1DFkdxDcdh5A?si=2826d6d3bc4b4acb&nd=1] We are always accepting new requests! If you'd like to recommend an uplifting song, you can submit them through this form. We look forward to hearing what you think of it, and may it be a source of joy and healing. Thank you everyone for collectively making this mixtape possible. - If you notice a song on the playlist that's not appropriate (e.g. contains profanity, triggering subject matter), please let me or Mahad know.
Verywell Mind - 7 Natural Ways to Increase Your Dopamine Levels
by zealousGrace5023
Last post
October 23rd
...See more “Dopamine is a chemical messenger [https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-a-neurotransmitter-2795394] in your brain. It’s essential for motivation, movement, memory, mood, sleep, and behavior regulation. Dopamine is also at the center of how the brain’s reward system works. Dopamine rewards you whenever you engage in a beneficial behavior and motivates you to repeat the behavior. Every time we do something enjoyable, like eating a nice meal, having sex, or going for a run, a little bit of dopamine is released in our brain. However, engaging in vices like alcohol or recreational drugs also causes dopamine to be released into the brain. This is why the chemical messenger has been closely linked to addiction [https://www.verywellmind.com/addiction-overview-4581803]. Low dopamine levels [https://www.verywellmind.com/common-symptoms-of-low-dopamine-5120239] have been linked to several medical conditions like depression [https://www.verywellmind.com/depression-4157261], addiction, schizophrenia [https://www.verywellmind.com/schizophrenia-4157221], and Parkinson’s disease. Low dopamine levels can make you feel less motivated, apathetic, listless and affect your ability to concentrate. Some symptoms of low dopamine levels include: * Low libido * Muscle stiffness * Insomnia * Lack of motivation * Fatigue * Inattention * Apathy * Listlessness How Dopamine Works Most of the dopamine produced by your body is made in the midbrain after which it is distributed to different areas in your brain. Despite decades of research, scientists are still baffled by the exact mechanism of dopamine in the brain. There are four major pathways for dopamine in your brain. Each one controls a different process in your body. Three of these pathways are your rewards pathways and their function is to release dopamine into your brain when you engage in a rewarding activity.1 What Causes Low Dopamine Levels? Many things could cause low dopamine levels. Some of them include: * Medical conditions: Some medical conditions have been linked to low dopamine levels. Conditions like schizophrenia, Parkinson’s diseases, depression, substance abuse, and bipolar disorder are common culprits of low dopamine levels. * Poor diet: Eating a diet that doesn’t contain adequate nutrients for optimal brain health could cause low dopamine levels—especially a diet that’s lacking in tyrosine. * Substance abuse: Abuse of alcohol and recreational drug use can, in the long term, cause your body to reduce its natural production of dopamine. This, in turn, causes you to rely on the substance you are abusing. * Certain medication: Some medications like antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs work by binding to dopamine receptors. This blocks the natural activity of dopamine in your brain. How to Increase Your Dopamine Levels Naturally Treating dopamine loss aims to cause the production of more dopamine, slow down the breakdown of dopamine that is being produced, create more dopamine receptors, and repair existing dopamine receptors so that they can work better. There are several supplements [https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-dopamine-5185621] and medications available for people who have low dopamine levels. Medication is often used in cases where your depleted dopamine levels is caused by a condition such as depression or schizophrenia. However, there are some techniques you could also use to increase your dopamine levels naturally.2 Get Enough Sleep Getting an adequate amount of sleep every night is necessary for maintaining our health. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults get an average of seven or more hours of sleep every night.3 When you don’t get enough sleep, dopamine receptors in your body can be adversely affected. Research has linked sleep deprivation [https://www.verywellmind.com/an-overview-of-chronic-sleep-deprivation-4770156] to the suppression of some dopamine receptors in your body.4 Listen to Some Music Make a playlist of some of your favorite music and listen to it when you are feeling listless, unmotivated, or experiencing other symptoms that indicate your dopamine levels are low. In a 2011 study, researchers found that when you listen to music you find pleasurable it can lead to a release of dopamine in your brain.5 Maintain a Healthy Diet Eating a healthy diet has several benefits for both your body and mind and increasing your dopamine levels is part of this. Foods that are rich in tyrosine like almonds, egg fish, and chicken are especially good for boosting dopamine levels. Tyrosine is an amino acid that is naturally produced by the body. Dopamine is made from this amino acid and can be found in protein-rich foods. Foods that contain natural probiotics such as yogurt and kefir may also increase dopamine production. Drinks like coffee also boost your dopamine, but keep in mind that as your dopamine levels drop after drinking it, this could cause a caffeine addiction [https://www.verywellmind.com/caffeine-addiction-4157287]. Exercise More Exercising regularly has been proven to be very important for your brain’s health. It can also help you boost your dopamine levels. Whenever you exercise your brain releases some dopamine.6 While more research needs to be conducted into the exact mechanism that leads the brain to produce dopamine when we exercise, you are probably familiar with the feeling you get after a workout. Frequent runners also report experiencing something called a runner’s high. This is described as a feeling of relaxation and elation and is a result of the release of dopamine by the brain. Meditate Meditating has a positive effect [https://www.verywellmind.com/meditation-overview-4581783] on a host of mental health conditions. Research also shows that meditation has the ability to increase your dopamine levels.7 Cut Down on Processed Sugars Consuming processed sugars like candy and soda have the ability to increase your dopamine levels, but this increase is only temporary and artificial. Like with alcohol and recreational drugs, sugar can give you temporary boosts of dopamine while affecting the rate at which your body produces it naturally. When you consume a large amount of sugar in a short time, you may notice that you feel a rush of elation. This is a sugar high. It is typically very temporary and followed by a crash that leaves you feeling down. Remove Stressors From Your Life Stress [https://www.verywellmind.com/stress-and-health-3145086] is a precursor to many medical conditions, it also causes low dopamine levels. We aren’t always in control of the things that bring stress into our lives, but you can eliminate stressors [https://www.verywellmind.com/what-are-stressors-3145149] that you have some control over. For instance, if a long commute to work is causing stress, you might consider moving closer to work. You can also engage in activities that reduce stress like meditating, exercising, or getting a massage. A Word From Verywell If you are experiencing symptoms that indicate that you might have a condition more serious than low dopamine levels, it’s important to see a doctor. If the cause of your low dopamine levels is an underlying medical condition, treating the condition will alleviate your low dopamine level symptoms and leave you feeling healthier and happier. ” By Toketemu Ohwovoriole [https://www.verywellmind.com/toketemu-ohwovoriole-5082111] Read source article here [https://www.verywellmind.com/natural-ways-to-increase-your-dopamine-levels-5120223] #BainHealth #Dopamine #NaturalRemedies #HealthyLiving
