Rethinking Authentic Self-Care
In recent times, the concept of self-care has become increasingly prevalent in our discourse, and rightfully so. However, as we delve deeper, it becomes apparent that much of what is marketed as self-care often revolves around superficial practices.
We are bombarded with messages suggesting that self-care equates to purchasing makeup, indulging in skincare routines, and essentially funnelling our resources into industries that thrive on undermining our self-esteem. It perpetuates the notion that our appearance is the sole aspect of ourselves worthy of attention.
True self-care goes encompasses nurturing ourselves holistically. It involves taking genuine care of our physical and mental well-being, nourishing ourselves, prioritizing our health, and engaging in activities that genuinely bring us joy and fulfilment — activities that resonate with us on a personal level, not dictated by societal standards or trends.
- What is self-care to you?
- How do you currently practice self-care and incorporate it into your daily life?
- In what ways do you aspire to improve your self-care practices?
@Mya000 to me self care means watching the sunrise every morning ❤ doing art and craft ❤ making toys and playing with my little guinea pigs ❤ relaxing to music, with mood light s on and the sound of my fountain treakling, light some candles. Also looking after my indoor palm tree, he's a beautiful tree
@Mya000
I agree and relate with your points about self-care being encouraged in a way that requires spending money on things that are often not required nor that helpful to have or experience. Thank you for raising this important topic and starting a discussion
To me self-care is discipline. When you do what you have to to either maintain or improve the quality of life, that is you taking care of yourself. To me its things like choosing a noursihing meal over something that tastes good but does not nourish, going for a walk instead of watching the 5th episode of a series in a row. Treating yourself like you are someone under your responsibility and 'care'.
@Mya000 What an awesome post! You are absolutely right; self-care is a holistic approach that involves more than indulging in temporary pleasures. One way I practice self-care daily is by making healthier food choices that nurture my body. I want to be more proactive instead of reactive when it comes to my health.
