Having a Pet

globalBraid3744 February 22nd, 2022

In good times and in bad, we can turn to our pets for comfort, joy, and support.

  • Do you have any pets? What are they? If you do not have any, would you like to have one (what pet would it be)?
  • Do you think it is important for children to have a pet? Why yes/no?
  • What are some benefits of having a pet?

Hi there, great post!

In answer to yours questions, yes I have two pug crosses. Both boys and such good fun the little rascals. I think there are some really good benefits to having a pet such as they certainly get you ‘out and about’ going for walks, getting fresh air and there’s always someone that wants to have a chat and give them a stroke (or a treat if they are lucky)!

I’d recommend anyone getting a pet (especially a dog!) but of course that’s not always possible. There are things that need to be considered first, ie. What sort of pet, some require more time and attention than others. Do they have enough time to spend with the pet, can they afford it.

Can I ask if you have a pet, if so what sort?

I like pugs so much! They are very cute :) I heard that they are very friendly and have a good temperament. I would definitely need a dog to make me out to nature haha. Thank you for the great recommendations! I also think that before getting a pet one should consider all those questions and ensure they can give the pet everything it needs (not to forget attention and love!).

I have a pet bunny! This is what he looks like:

Aww…what a cute bunny! I’m such a big animal lover, I’d have all sorts…if I had the room and time of course…😀

The same for me! I love animals in general. Once I have my own house, I would like to have more pets. Especially, I dream of having a horse. Horses are amazing creatures and they can also show affection and ´take you out´ for walks as dogs haha. This is exactly what I need.

Ohh, great thread!

Yep, I have a dog! I've always grown up with dogs 😊 At one point we had 6!

I'd be totally open to having more pets, although dogs can be a bit of a handful! We did however adopt and take care of some injured animals, like birds until they were able to fly away again.

  • Do you think it is important for children to have a pet? Why yes/no?

Definitely! Although not everyone is able to take care of a pet, so I wouldn't recommend it unless it was 'right' for the family. But there's so many benefits in a child having a pet; not just the companionship, but all the skills and training in taking care of one.

There's a lot of investment in having a pet which people don't realise- whether that's time, care, money. Fish are definitely on the cheaper end of the spectrum but even then it's the cost of setting up a tank, who is going to take care of them if you go away for a holiday, and also the grief for when they die. 🐡

So so many! This is definately worth a google search if you're interested in learning more. For me it's having the companion, and since my dog needs walkies that gets me out of the house! My dogs have also been creepily in tune with my health; like knowing I'm unwell before I do.

One thing that's really cool to look at is the research around having a pet and mental or physical health, or having a pet and the elderly. There's a good reason we have dogs in hospitals, aged care, rehabs and therapy rooms. One of my friend is even a counsellor and she does equine therapy!

I also used to grow up with a dog, unfortunately, he was already old so now I have a bunny. I can imagine that having 6 dogs is loots of work. I love all kinds of animals as well and when I have my own house one day, I definitely want more animals. It is very admirable of you and your family to take care of injured animals.

I agree that not everyone is able to take care of a pet. Moreover, often the children stop being interested in it once it grows up so I would also consider some kind of a test of commitment with another animal (e.g. fish as you mentioned) or plant and give some responsibility also to the child.

This is so interesting that your dogs can sense when something is wrong with your health before you know. I think it might be connected to their sense of smell.

I was reading a research article recently about therapy with a puppy and it was also having promising results. Equine therapy must be amazing. I am a horse lover myself and riding is exactly what helps me when I feel bad. Having a pet has so many benefits!

I have a chihuahua terrier mix.

I think it is very important for children to have pets. Because it teaches them responsibility. And teach you some how to be caring and compassionate.

I love your answer! I also think that it is a great way how to teach children how to be compassionate and caring but also responsible.

This is my beautiful old boy Tootsie who is coming up 17 this year and honestly a god send for me. I have been dealing with some health issues and agoraphobia for the past near 4 years and he always senses my moods on rough days and comes and cuddles me :)

I do have pets. I love spending time with dogs and chickens... I can connect emotionally with them. Whenever i feel too distressed i take a break and talk to the dogs though idk if they understand or not but i think they can feel me more than any human being! 🙂

I think animals are very good at sensing what a person feels and they can provide unconditional love.

Since I got a cat, my mental health improved. I always loved pets but it's a huge responsibility... Shortly speaking, it's really worth it. If you still have any doubts - just do it and you won't regret. Here you can find more details about cat food and health https://www.catfoodpoint.com/. Hope it's useful for you guys!

Thank you for your reply and for the article! It is great to hear that while acknowledging its downsides, you recognize that having a cat is still worth it and that your cat improves your well-being.

my cats are my very best friends at the moment I love them so much. I am so happy to have them in my life and will do anything I can to make sure they have the best possible life. animals are so great. its difficult when you need to find a place to live and places won't allow any animals - but if you can have one, I highly recommend it. animals can be great for stress and anxiety.

I agree! Animals can make anyone's life better. I also would like to get a cat soon. However, as you say many places for rent do not allow animals even if they are well-behaved.

What pet do you have? I feel sorry having a pet makes it tougher for you! In what ways does it worsen your depression?
