I have seen this movie and I've read the short story time and time and time again and it took till the last time I saw it to truly understand what and who that story was about and I'm curious if anybody else is understood what the real underlying theme was about that movie and story

@luke8686

For me it's a story that can be understood on many levels:

About a man in love who has taken the blame on himself, despite the fact he later found out being not guilty.

About the world being unfair very often.

About people who feel untouchable and punishless... sometimes up to some point.

About men adapting to difficult conditions.

About perseverance and never giving up.

About ups and downs in human lives.

About the meaning of friendship and being a part of community.

About taking the risk when it is the only way to survival and freedom.

About trying to keep the human dignity no matter the circumstances.

And maybe anything else...

I understand exactly what you're saying and I agree wholeheartedly the one thing that I realized is that the story was not about the rich banker whose wife cheated on him and he wound up in prison the story wasn't about Andy dufresne at all the story was about red and his growth from a kid who murdered somebody to a man who cared deeply for others but was too afraid to admit it to himself and others a man who sat back and watched the world grow into something he didn't understand but still found a way to accept it and to be a part of it yes he broke the law that's true at the end but it's what he had to do for him and that's what that story is about to me anyways it's about red and his growth and learning how to shed his past and growing into the man that he was at the end of that movie once I realized that it was just an entire different story for me in fact it made me tear up at the end

Yes, maybe I was concentrated more on the character played by Tim Robbins. Not due to the fact he was rich banker, but because I thought the actor was average - and after seeing this movie I've changed my mind.

Is there something in the Red's story that looks similar to your life? Are you becoming a person like him, getting older, looking for a meaning, being more aware of the world around, even if this world may look awkward or unfair?

It could not be scripted and read by mr. Freeman himself. You hit the nail on the head. I only did 3 1/2 years and i did not commit murder but i did leave prison s complete different person then the one who got arrested for holding a gas station up for $86. I see myself in a completely different way now, i react yo the world in a much more cynical way now yet at the same time i understand what a relationship is supposed to be now and i now know its not about me and my struggles all the time. I have exactly one relationship left and thats with my father and he has never meant more to me then he does now. And its so much more gratifying uplifting him and helping him and earning his trust instead of trying to help myself all the time and manipulating and lying to get my way so yeah I think I kind of resonate with red in a way anyways

Good to hear that. It looks the way you think and feel is quite balanced and mature now.

It's been only a few days of this year left. 2025 is coming. How would you like to see your life in say... 10 years from now?
