10 Ways to Cope With Hypervigilance in PTSD

blitheSun94 July 28th, 2017

Dear Readers,

It wasn't until I was properly diagnosed that I ever associated my sensory sensitivity, or hyper-vigilance, to the symptoms of PTSD- better known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Many people with PTSD describe sensations of feeling overwhelmed by their environment. This might include bright lights, too many people talking, loud noises, or being touched. These difficulties can reach into all areas of our lives and go on to affect our relationships, our jobs, our families, and our friends. Many times these individuals are seen as different or withdrawn, when in all actuality we are likely exhausted, over-stimulated, or confused. Highly sensitive people, or HSP, may also fall into this category in general. Please visit the following article for the Top 10 Survival Tips for Highly Sensitive People (HSP) from Psychology Today.

Do you often feel overwhelmed by lights or sounds or touch? Do you find yourself hiding at family gatherings, or on bad days unable to leave the house? Please use the space below to share stories and encourage one another.

Thank you so much for stopping by and taking the time to read my post. I think this is a topic that often gets overlooked, and like many other things in mental health, appears to be generally misunderstood. What brings you to this part of the Forum? Does someone you love live with PTSD?

No problem! I just became a Forum Mentor (Teen Star) for this subcommunity recently since I have a passion to support those with PTSD around here. I don't know anyone with PTSD but I was just going through the Needs Reply section so that's how I found this specific thread smiley You're super great for helping to bring light to such an important topic; keep being your awesome self!

Yup! All subcommunities (as well as regular forum sections that aren't subcommunities) have a Needs Reply section, as well as the overall forum. The Needs Reply section for the Trauma subcommunity can be found here as well as the overall forum's Needs Reply section being found here. You can find these by clicking "Needs Reply" at the top of the forums, this feature is not on the app though; site only. I hope this helps and stay awesome! heart

Perfect, thank you! The app needs a lot of work. I prefer the world wide web myself. 😀
