Fourth of July Fireworks: 4 Tips to Help Veterans and Other PTSD Sufferers Enjoy the Holiday
Trauma Support / by blitheSun94
Last post
July 11th
...See more Dear Readers, As we move into the early morning hours of July 4th, 2024, I want to take a moment to recognize all our heroes, standing and fallen alike, and thank them for their service by offering a moment of mindful silence. At the same time, I think it's important to highlight from both personal and professional experience that this is not a joyful day for all. For those of us suffering from PTSD, it is often associated with flashbacks, loud noises banging late into the night, episodic anxiety, and a great sense of distress. Angelica Stabile at Fox News writes, "The Fourth of July should be a day for all Americans to celebrate our nation's birthday, but for some, especially America's heroes, celebratory traditions like setting off fireworks can be mentally and emotionally grueling. As the explosives are usually set off at night, with bright flashes and loud bangs that come at inconsistent intervals, veterans may struggle with these celebrations."  In an interview with Fox News Digital, Florida family physician and former Navy Officer Dr. Christopher Scuderi offered tips for people with PTSD to prepare for the sudden, loud noises of the Fourth of July holiday. Here are four: * Communication 'PTSD sufferers should ask their neighbors if they plan to set off fireworks, so they aren't caught off guard if it does happen,' Scuderi said. In a previous interview with Fox News Digital, Dr. Tony Brooks, a combat veteran based in Everett, Washington, also recommended having this 'simple human-to-human conversation.' He recommended that anyone planning to set off fireworks bring up the topic casually in conversation. This step offers an opportunity for others to voice their concerns without forcing them to admit something they may wish to keep private.  Veterans who have issues with fireworks will most likely speak up if they're mentioned, according to Brooks - even if the response is as simple as, 'I'm not a fan of them.' * Noise Cancellation For Veterans who will be indoors, Scuderi recommended darkening the room, as well as using ear protection, such as foam earplugs or noise-canceling headphones, while fireworks are going off. 'Have some items around the house that can help with self-care before the holiday that will center you if you are exposed to loud noises,' he advised.  * Trigger Management For those planning on being out in the evening, Scuderi suggested having a designated driver in case triggers occur.  Having self-soothing methods on deck during stressful times can be helpful, according to Scuderi. This might include deep breathing exercises to calm the nervous system or other mindfulness techniques, like mindful eating using 'all of your senses (how does the food look, smell, feel),' Scuderi said. 'Sometimes the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory exercise can help with recentering,' the physician said. 'What are five thing you can see, four things you can hear, three things you can feel, two things you can smell, and one good or grateful thing you can say about yourself?' Especially during the hot summer months, Scuderi suggested cooling the body temperature by taking a cold shower or using an ice cube or bag of frozen vegetables on the skin. 'This can help with PTSD triggers,' he said. * Positive Self-Talk Scuderi also recommended practicing positive self-talk. 'Just reminding yourself that you are in a safe zone can help,' he said. 'Accept your emotions and remind yourself that fireworks are startling for anyone, and that you are safe.' Not every PTSD sufferer is the same, Brooks mentioned, as many veterans enjoy Fourth of July fireworks.  For veterans who are struggling with their symptoms, Scuderi suggested contacting their physician for treatment, and reaching out to VA resources like the PTSD Coach mobile app or VA crisis line at 1-800-273-8255. Endometriosis: Complications Post-Hysterectomy
Women's Issues / by blitheSun94

...See more Good Good morning early birds, late birds, and afternoon birds, In a previous post [https://www.7cups.com/forum/women/ReproductiveHealth_2516/UglyTruthsWhenitIsntEndometriosis_295980/] I tell my story from the beginning and mention the following in the comment section: '"t's important to note that Endo is not solely a reproductive disease, it is an estrogen dependent condition which explains why pms, menstrual cycles, and diet exacerbate the many manifestations of this illness. Endo can be found in the eyes, brain, and even strangle the heart. My hope is to share my story and provide support to other individuals and their loved ones who are deeply impacted by the symptoms and hard decisions Endo will force one to make. While it is a chronic pain condition with no cure, that is only one facet of its impact on organs throughout the entire body. Everyone experiences this disease differently. It is uniquely a case-by-case basis, and frankly, that's exactly why it deserves its own community. My hope is to connect with that population and lift them up by providing a more viable platform where currently there exists none." All that to say I am ten months post-op and last Sunday, I wet the bed. That's right. I peed my pants. This is something I had never done before, which lead me to very real questions concerning the position of my bladder post-hysterectomy. I have been experiencing the following resurfacing of symptoms and made the mistake of consulting Dr. Google. I’m ten months post laparoscopy, total hysterectomy, and diagnosis. (01/04/2023) I’m 34 years old and have never experienced incontinence, although I did have severe urine retention post-op.  On top of Nocturnal Enuresis, I have been ignoring the following: * Bladder Pain * Digestive problems (blood in stool)  * Sacral and Low Back pain  * Hip pain * Pelvic pain * Bloating  * Fatigue  * Pain with Urination  * Inability to empty my bladder * Ovarian Pain (lower abdomen) * Pain Flare Post Intercourse  * and now, Incontinence  I know these surgeries can damage your bladder and pelvic floor in general, so yesterday I went back to my OB for a new ultrasound. When I say it was painful, I mean it was somewhere between barbwire and a uterine biopsy, but I wanted answers more than I was afraid of the pain. I practiced my breathwork while the technician kept me distracted by her own life story. I gently reminded myself that this lifelong illness that engages like benign cancer and mimics an auto immune disease has no cure. In my opinion it's underfunded, understudied, and in the wrong category all together. [So far, signs point toward the UK managing endometriosis patients better than the US.] While logistically I understand that I have to do all that it takes, the state of overwhelm nearly brought me to tears. I had taken a break from procedures due to ongoing medical trauma related PTSD. Subsequent surgeries are nearly imminent and with that comes a unique type of grief. I recently fired my Pain Management doctor because he refuted my Neurologist and wanted to perform Cervical Ablation on me for no good reason. My mother has said herself that she will never be cut open again. Mostly I came here to say that you're not crazy and you're not alone if this is happening to you. I slept a whopping four hours due to the stress and anxiety of it all. Today we go back to get the results and decide what to do next. Keep you posted. 💛
