Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in Wednesday 4th April 2018
Hi Trauma Family, when going through a traumatic period or recovering from a traumatic event, we look for support from our friends family and peers etc. However, support (comfort,encouragement, inspiration) can also manifest through "creative means". For example a friend commented that the song "Don't give up" by Kate Bush and Peter Gabrielle had brought her great comfort in her darkest times. The well know singer Adel is known for her heartfelt songwriting, and as a result many have felt comforted by her songs.
How about books? "The Colour Purple" written by Alice Walker explores themes such as child abuse, domestic violence, empowerment and liberation. This book has strengthened many over the years.
Have you watched the film The Matrix (1)? I first watched this film in 1999. There is something about the last scene of this film that I found strangely comforting. In this scene Neo (the main character played by Keanu Reeves) died. His oppressors had succeeded in killing him and you think that it is all over, but then he comes back to life. This time when the "Agents" (baddies) try and kill him he is far more powerful than before, and he easily overcomes them. Neo now know's who he is (his identity), and now the Agents (baddies) have to acknowledge who he is. Acknowledging that he is strong, resilliant, and powerful! I just love this scene, because it's about "fighting back" overcoming those who try to destroy you, and stepping into your identity.
How about poetry? one of my favourite poems is by Maya Angelo "Still I rise", here is a verse from this poem;
You may shoot me with your words
You many cut me with your eyes
You may kill me with your hatefullnesss
But still like air I rise.
So how about you? As you walk on your road to recovery are their songs, books, TV series, films, music, artwork, poetry etc that has inspired you or provided you with comfort, encouragement or strength along the way? If so what impact did this have on you?
How has your day been? this is a your place a safe space

Hm! Interesting!
Also, that poem is really striking.
I'm in a phase of my life where I like anti-heroes and more gray area protagonists. Stuff like Arsene Lupin by Maurice Leblanc and people who are essentially "noble thieves" or people simply trying to be a decent human being while balancing chaotic life circumstances and getting out of them. I get tired of the arrogant Sherlock Holmes type with his codependent sidekick. Or geniuses that can do all the things and are a terrible person but revered anyway. Same thing as ol' Sherlock, here. Other than that, someone fighting against all odds is also inspiring.
Not sure what to say today...my first day back in therapy. Hope things go well later...
Hey @CaloenasNicobarica! How did therapy go? I like the stories with people fighting against all odds too, and I think that
@BeeLeigh
Hey, BeeLeigh! Good to see you, again! :)
Therapy went well, thanks for asking. Got the latest appointment time on a different day. I get back super late now. It fits my needs, though so it's cool. Covered a lot of stuff and set some boundaries. Feel like things will go well and I'll work harder towards addressing issues. Anyway, those stories are so relatable. Now that I think about it, most of the stories I enjoy the most have that person against all odds type of thing. lol Especially video games! Love to see them grow and then be able to overcome those staggering odds.
@CaloenasNicobarica
Sounds like you put in some work Cal!! You got this buddy. Therapy can be really difficult, but it
@BeeLeigh
Thanks, BeeLeigh! Safe hugs to you today!
@CaloenasNicobarica
Hi Caloenas,😀 I also like "gray area protagonists" because they show that you don't have to be perfect or have it all together, to do something good or worth while. I hope that your therapy session went well 💗.
@Amandisa16
Thanks! It totally did. And that's such a good point about the gray area protags. Not all of us are perfectly stoic neurosurgeons solving crimes and building space stations. XD
Music helps me cope.. art helps me release my emotions.
@energeticPenny8
Hi Penny 😊, music has such a power to soothe, glad that it helps you to cope. Art is a wonderful way of releasing emotions. A family member was recently telling me about the work of an artist called "Mark Rothco" that primarily used colours to express different emotions. So art can bring such a release. Thank you for sharing❤
@Amandisa16 My friend introduced me to a wonderful anime show called Laid-back camp which is a very happy show about friends going camping. :) There's another show by the same director I might check out.
I've been feeling pretty stressed the past few days because of starting a new job and fears of being late and negative evaluations. I also struggle with fear of authority figures like my boss.
@Daydreamer47
Hi Daydreamer😀 sounds like a fun relaxing show. Sorry to hear that you are feeling stressed out about your new job. lt is perfectly natural to feel fearful or anxious when starting a new job. When I began my new job I was very anxious, insecure and stressed. Fearing that I would fail or do something wrong, in fact whenever I step out and do something new I have these same feelings!
You mentioned that you are afraid of getting in late, is there any way that you can leave earlier to ensure that you arrive on time? Although you fear authority figures again it is perfectly natural to feel fearful of a boss, particularly when you have started a new job. Is there anything you can do to take your mind off your fears and anxieties concerning this job? In what ways can you treat yourself, and practise some self care. A nice soak in the bath, watching your favourite TV programme etc. Finally, congratulations on your new job💗💗💗
I'm totally new to this but am having trouble coping with trauma. An I in the right place, and what now?
