Questions on assessment

curiousKy1027 October 6th, 2021

Hi! I just needed some help with understanding the difference between a psychological assessment and a psychiatric assessment. I was considering taking a psychological assessment because it is what i found available at the moment but then i heard about psychiatric assessment and now i’m kinda confused on what the difference is. What can i expect from them?

@curiousKy1027 In my limited experience, it depends on what you want to assess. Psychologists and psychiatrists tend to specialize, and you choose whoever specializes in the thing you are interested in. Or, more often, you see a general physician first, who refers you to the most appropriate kind of assessment.

@curiousKy1027 I am not exactly sure what those tests would be used for but in general a psychiatrist is involved with prescribing medicines to counter the imbalances or disorders of the brain.

A psychologist or therapist is usually involved with talk therapy.

Some people respond well to one or the other; some need both. Hope that helps.

a psychiatrist will write you a prescription for medications and a psychologist will give you mental tools to work on your issues. Start with a psychologist and if they feel that they cannot help you they will refer you to a psychiatrist.
