Study Tips and Destressing Before Exams

Ghost0fNightmares May 30th, 2016

Hi there! <3

my exams are basically next week. And as per usual I'm absolutely freaking out, because these are my last exams ( you know the ones that get you into college ... :0!) So... I've tried many studying techniques , and still cant really figure out something that works. Im off for this whole week in order to study for them. They start on the 8th of June ... :|

So anyways, I believe I am more of a person who learns through talking or visual. I really dont know. And I've tried lots of things :(

Here are some things I've done to help me study :

🍊 I've been following a study plan

🍊 I downloaded an app called "Fabulous" to help me manage my time and daily routine

🍊 I make mind maps to help me visualise I sometimes even draw little pictures in the corners....

🍊 I've managed my time so well and follow it so well...

AND YET I STILL FEEL LIKE NOTHING IS GETTING INTO MY HEAD :'(!!

and yes afcourse stress could be a cause... but I managed my timing.. I get regular sleep and I drink water.. eat a good breakfast. I meditate once in a while... and take 30 minute breaks after each 2hrs of study..

I jut don't know how to get stuff into my head fast. Now. I just have to ://!

Any ideas on how to? <\3

Hi there, I noticed you wrote that you feel nothing is getting into your head. Trying to remember things off-hand can feel difficult so some tips to test your own memory would be to:

1) Try out questions! You would need to practice some exam questions before hand, so this is a good way to see if anything is sticking.

2) Revise. If you have heard it twice or thrice, it sticks. You can try revising by skimming over what the key points of what you just learnt. Then go back for another skim tomorrow just to refresh your memory.

3) Do mindmaps, mindmaps help you to think laterally in all directions and some say its more organic that way. ( Imagine a linear though process vs one thats like a branch). So making mindmaps off the top of your head and filling in the blanks can help.

Pitfalls:

Just make sure you do skimming and not re-read everything again, this can take up time!

Be gentle on yourself , its okay to forget, at least you know what you don't know.

Hope this helps! You seem to be doing a lot of things right like having a good sleep pattern, meal plan and hydration too, thats awesome! All the best for your exams!

Thankyou so much! <3

I've been doing mind maps. And re-reading over them a lot. They help a bit . But what exactly do you mean by 'skimming' :) ?

Hellooo!

Well skimming means you look at the Key Points only, think of it as trigger words that jolt that part of your memory and helps you to remember the rest. It serves as a refresher of sorts!

So one way some people do this is to highlight short quotes or important bits, or read the first or last sentence (thereabouts) of each paragraph just to get a gist of it.

For example if you think about a friend's name, your impression of them and their related memories just come naturally to the forefront of your mind. So naturally when you skim through some key words, the relevant laws and formulas and theories should hopefully come to you too!
