Threads no longer visible from SC page
@7cupscommunity
We can no longer see threads from a subcommunity's page, we can only see subforums.
Is this intended or a glitch?
If it is permanent, can the number of subforums that appear on the first page be expanded? Currently it's only 4. With the lack of the 1st 3 most recent threads in each, I think the number of subforums seen could be easily doubled, it would still be less lines overall than what we had previously. Ie 3 or 4 subforums + 3 threads each = 12 or 15 lines vs the 8 I suggest we she at minimum.
I also think thata with this change it's more important to be able to sort threads by the most recent post. I shared about this already. With how things currently view we need to scrap 'most popular' as the current title, as it's just a list of subforums. Newest is fine, but should be more specific to newest thread, also have newest post as a sorting option, needs reply is fine, top posts have been renamed most upvotes to that change.
Also a reminder, if this was an intended change, a quick update is helpful so users know it's intentional. With certain changes this can also help prevent some of the issues with rumours.
For small changes, I would like to subscribe to a thread over here, for cases when a change isn't seen as big enough to send out a notification to everyone - https://www.7cups.com/forum/SiteUpdates_100/Siteupdatesandchanges_2007/
@AffyAvo I hope it's a glitch (it seems as though they're doing something in the forums at least, I now get a "create a member account to participate" button on the general forum page, and every time I load a forum I get a split second of an unformatted page....so I hope it's just something they accidentally messed with?). Being able to see the posts within each subforum (sorted by which ones had newest comments) was pretty helpful, otherwise I'm just going to have to guess which threads are being actively commented on within the subcom? Without having to subscribe to every thread :/
I think it's also helpful for newbies to get a sense of what kind of posts are in each topic to get an idea where to post, otherwise you'd be clicking in each to see (or at least, that's how I navigate in the subcoms I'm not super familiar with :P)
Not sure how effective just having an updated sorting feature would suffice for just...what was already working alright, in terms of this little change at least :(
@TaranWanderer Oh yeah, things look glitchy, I get that create an account thing too.
I agree it's helpful to see the posts in the subforums, but it also helps to have a subforum list without having to click through 9 different pages. Subcommunities often have subforum lists in their describtion and/or resources to try to help with that, but that's not obvious to newcomers either. So there are advantages/disadvantages to both.
If the number of pages to see each subforum stay the same AND the most recent threads don't show up I only see a disadvantage.
Maybe win/win could be reverting back to what we had PLUS also having a obvious subforum list button. Something like See All Subforums - drop down list.
@AffyAvo I would love a small list to the side of just the subforum names/links, along with the usual listing of subforum with the few newest used posts. I agree, it's annoying to have to click through so many pages to find a particular topic, and especially not being familiar with a subcom, to have to click through all of them to see what exists at all
@TaranWanderer Those general forum pages with the "Create a Member Account to Participate" button are an absolute mess internally. That's why you see unformatted links briefly before the real page loads. I can't imagine why anyone would mess with the page in that way, and I can't imagine why anyone would put the resulting mess on the production server. I suppose we'll never know.

Newest does appear to be newest posts now. I think newest threads was still a helpful feature, I hope this isn't going to be lost.
Update - or not. All 3 of the sorting options give the same result and are a bit all over the place. So my guess is this is being worked on?
Agree that forum sorting is broken.
I figured out what it's currently doing. "Newest", "Needs Reply", and "Most Upvotes" all return "Newest" except that it's displaying pinned threads first, which I don't think is really helpful.
Tagging @7CupsCommunity
@QuietMagic Ah, thanks for sharing that! Temporarily it was helpful to go through and unpin a bunch of threads that didn't need to be pinned anymore.
It looks like the default forum sorting ("Most Popular") has also changed, and I'd say in a way that isn't very helpful.
- What it used to do: Display a list of all forums in the sub-community (4 per page), sorted by most recent post. Within each forum, display the first three threads sorted by most recent post.
- What it now does: Display a list of all forums in the sub-community (4 per page), sorted by most recent post. Within each forum, display the first three threads sorted by most recently created thread.
@7CupsCommunity
I've submitted two Help Request tickets regarding the "Most Popular" sorting issue (#279218 on 8/7/21, #280226 on 8/12/21) and it still hasn't been fixed almost 2 weeks later.
Could you please reach out to the tech support team and ask them to fix this ASAP?
I'm pretty frustrated with the lack of progress on this:
- I followed the proper procedures for reporting this issue and provided enough information about what is happening, what is supposed to be happening, and why this issue matters.
- Based on my own programming background, this should be an easy fix.
- It should be as simple as replacing a single variable in a database query.
- I'm not asking for a new feature. I'm just asking for an existing/critical feature of the forum to be fixed back to the way that it was working for months before they broke it.
- The other three forum sorting options were quickly corrected about a week ago, so I see no reason why they shouldn't be able to also fix this issue.
- I haven't received any response to my tickets or any status update indicating whether they plan to fix this or have a reason for not fixing this.
- This thread also hasn't received any response from the @7CupsCommunity account, despite being tagged multiple times weeks ago.
Thank you.
@QuietMagic I put in a ticket too and haven't heard back, it's more than just the forums that have issues.
This update really makes a lot of the forum responses difficult. All threads now show up under Needs Reply.
I couldn't find this thread from the Updates area, I had to look at my forum threads to get back here.
It would also help to see which threads are pinned - when they go to the top why don't they show as being pinned in the lists?
@7CupsCommunity @Mel
Problem: There are bugs and the way the forums sort no longer seems to be logical and makes it difficult to find posts that need responses. When updates aren't announced it can also be confusing which is a change that's not done with forethought to how it affects everyone and what is actually a bug. Tags and emails go unanhswered.
Solutions:
Give us logical methods of sorting the forums. If threads are pinned, indicate there are pins to them.
Announce updates.
Discuss changes with regulars in the community so potential issues can be solved before they even become a problem.
Respond to tags and emails.
FYI--the "Most Popular" sorting appears to have been fixed (i.e. now displays the 3 posts with the newest replies) as of today, at least for me.
@AffyAvo
I am hoping it is just a glitch! But either way, great ideas like always, Affy!
@HopieRemi Thanks! Hopefully we can get solutions soon!
@AffyAvo
Hopefully!
Thank you for the feedback we have sent the feedback to the rest of the community team and the developer team to look into these issues.
