Bedroom

BastionKnight October 23rd

"Goodnight and may your dreams be sweet"

The Bed! I beg, just look beneath!

Then sound on stairs, (and gnashing teeth).

Betrayal of receding feet.

Then terror twists the tamed terrain.

Desperate lamp of dusk is fading.

Shadows crouch, anticipating.

Creeping claws across black-ice pane.

Stillness; The whole house holds it's breath.

Each door a traitor in waiting,

A gloom glutted gullet gaping.

Trapped in this night-choked edifice.

The cover shields the fear filled nest.

Hands clenched tight, soundlessly pleading.

But only ghouls hide here heeding

The pounding drum caged in the chest.

Hold your breath or else they'll eat you!

Fear wide eyes are madly searching,

For monsters in the room perching,

Always lurking at edge of view.

With time, sight pierced the murky haze.

Vison grants awful clarity,

A door ajar that should not be!

Panic-struck mind is set ablaze.

The dark bleeds morbid silhouette.

It's just a cupboard, nothing more!

But what is creaking on the floor!?

Unbidden ghosts I can't forget.

Evil forms as an unseen beast.

Insides turned to frozen slurry,

Screaming now for help to hurry.

The hungry fiend prepares to feast.

Blinding life with a click floods in,

Light washes back normality

Comfort scares off brutality.

Standing guard to let sleep begin.

So when in time it is you that sings the lullabies,

Remember that 'twas once you that saw with those same eyes.

@BastionKnight  Beautiful poem! The first few stanzas were absolutely terrifying - I could see myself in that dark room

@azurePond

Thank you so much, your comments are very much appreciated. That you could put yourself into the position of the narrator in the bedroom in the dark is what I was striving for; I was very much hoping that the voice of the narrator becomes the voice of the reader as you share their impotent dread and (happily) final relief at being 'saved' at the end.

Thank you again for your words, it is very encouraging.

@BastionKnight Yes... And I love how the final  two lines serve as a poignant reminder of our collective vulnerability - Singing lullabies becomes a powerful act of empathy, bridging the gap between past fears and present comfort. It's a moving exploration of how we navigate darkness, both in ourselves and for others. Excellent work!
