Neon Smiles

I associate love with the smell of gunpowder,

With sneaking around in the dark.

Yeah, I associate love with nerves,

The ball of organs inside trying to stay warm,

Like hibernating snakes.

You see that wild look in my eye,

And you know I've bled for the game,

I've bled for the machine,

I've bled for the experiment,

And I've done it strategically.

This is truly me,

This is the truest anything gets,

I've lied through a thousand lives,

But this truest form sees all.

I've seen a ghost pop up in the TV,

Been told I look so cool after watching a movie,

I see something in the screens they mean to hide,

It comes out in tunes I tried to replicate as a child,

And I just got in trouble for making noises.

The creepy dolls sitting on the top step,

Tell me there's a whole world up there I don't have to worry about.

The smiling neon faces are my guides,

To the world I'm ready to return to when I'm done fighting.

And as soon as I make it to the next room,

They close the door and I know I'll have to bleed again.

I laugh when they hurt me,

I joke at their determined orders and uniform,

And I realize why fighting and conniving never worked…

They don't want to be here either,

They just don't realize it.

It's ok to bleed for a game,

We’re not going to play without the pain,

Just without the suffering.

What color will your neon smile be?

Bodies pressed up to each other in the grass,

Dark outside and the shots and voices audible,

All the seriousness of conflict and love,

We’ve got better places to be,

Let's keep this party moving.
