Layers of Ink: Writing and Risk

WinterAims March 9th

In the depths of ink, where shadows dance,

I ponder the role of vulnerability's trance.

For in the lines I weave, I bare my soul,

Yet fear the toll of wounds untold.

With each word penned, a piece of me,

Exposed to the world, yet longing to be free.

Navigating the labyrinth of my mind,

Seeking solace, solace to find.

Vulnerability, a double-edged sword,

Unveiling truths, yet striking chords.

How do I balance, how do I cope,

With emotions raw, with scars and hope?

I tread lightly on the page's expanse,

Guided by courage, yet wary of chance.

Protecting my heart, my sanctuary within,

As I navigate the delicate dance, where to begin?

Yet in the vulnerability, there lies strength,

A testament to resilience, at any length.

For in the act of sharing, wounds find their voice,

And in the echo of empathy, I find rejoice.

So I embrace the risk, the fear, the unknown,

For in vulnerability, true growth is shown.

Navigating the balance, with each word I write,

I find the courage to expose, to heal, to ignite.

Ive started therapy, and I’ve only been to a few therapy sessions, and my poems were a big part of how I would share my experiences and emotions, and my therapist gave me some “homework” and told me to think about this, “What role does vulnerability play in my writing process, and how do I navigate the delicate balance between exposing my wounds and protecting my own emotional well-being?” I don’t have a super simple answer or anything but I used it as the topic for this poem.

@WinterAims

That's a very nice poem! Writing poems has gotten me through some very hard times. Sometimes I get manic and I write about it. I'd be happy to share one of my favorites if you'd like. Keep writing! You're very good at it.

Blessings, Day

-PERCEPTION-

Perceiving what we believe in

is deceiving and has no meaning

as life's mistreating

dishes out this beating

........Leaving us bleeding

But we cant see it if we close our minds

....and we cant think about this when we're blind

so walk away and you will find,

a friend here waiting for a sign!

So take your time

.....and organize

whats on your mind

and you'll wisely find

you're not really behind

so relax your eyes and you'll realize

you're fine just the way you are!

And you can reach for the stars

put cream on the scars

and then healing transpires

The delusional parts only confuse our goals

...and they corrupt our souls

Leaving us with a heart full of holes.

Set goals now and your mind will see

what closed eyes have failed to believe

Don't let sight deceive & keep us on our knees

....throwing logic into the breeze.

Winds at your back excited

Winds of hope reignited me.

Step by step confide

so we can share secrets of life

........Thinking

"what could be?"

.......But only if we let it,

if you hold back you'll regret it!

"There, Now I've gone and said it!"

We hold ourselves down......

Dirty on the ground.....

I've found myself tormented and bound

by invisibility. ......

I've ignored all possibility.....

so I must set myself free

of a self-inflicted confined mystery

....That causes so much mind-bending misery

@WinterAims beautiful, I can relate using poetry as a means of expression.

A poet plays a beautiful race,

When the mind thinks deeply and can replace,

The fast-paced world into a few lines,

How can we be open yet keep things intertwined?

What happens is a magical time,

For our words may be interpreted,

In many ways.

And so, if we trace back time,

Using words and rhymes,

We might find.

Peace and harmony.

@WinterAims Beautiful writing!

I agree that writing is a great way to get your emotions out and organized.  I love doing it myself, though I haven't been able to do it recently; just haven't been able to work up the motivation...

What kinds of stuff do you like writing?

What types and styles do you use?

One of my minors is in creative writing, in other words i've taken a ton of writing and poetry classes lol.  I loved a lot of the challenges that my classes gave me, especially in poetry.

@Geodegirl Thank you!

Writing is definitely a great way to express your emotions! It can certainly be difficult to work up the motivation to start writing something, I’ve been having trouble with that recently too.

i really love writing poems like the one you read, I’ve written a few stories based off of my experiences too, but those are a lot harder for me to write. So many things to make the story about, do I include this in the story, where does the story start, where does it end, and so on, and I always end up proofreading them 30 times and updating them twice as much 😂

As for types and styles, I’m not really sure what the different types and styles of poetry there are, I’m a bit new to it, on and off for a year or so, maybe less, and I’m sorta self taught, never really done any sort of research on them, just know the stuff that I’ve read if that makes sense?

As for the stories, I mentioned that they are based off of my experiences, however the story is written in 3rd person and of course a “fictional” character and setting. It was hard to write them for sure but I think they turned out alright, they’re the only 2 stories I’ve ever written.

It’s awesome that you went to school for creative writing, and writing challenges sound fun, may I ask what sort of challenges you’d get for poetry? I’d love to learn more about it and improve, but that goes back to the motivation issue though I guess lol

Sorry about the novel I just wrote 😂 I love meeting and talking to others who love to write ❤️

@WinterAims You're fine lol, you should see some of my essays.  If i get motivated enough, it gets hard to stop writing,  A lot of the exercises that i've done are from Ordinary Genius by Kim Addonizio

I'll list some of the exercises   that I've done

1. "Start with a line from someone else": For class we were given a list of lines to pick from.

2."Challenge the evidence: choose a photograph of yourself or someone you know. Describe the external things the photograph shows, and the reality it seems to portray. Then describe why, and how, the photograph is a lie."  I interpreted this a bit differently, and wrote two different poems about the same picture (a group pic at one of my birthday parties) With the external one i made the poem in the shape of a balloon, the reality one was reversed into a tear.  That was one of the rougher ones that i've written.

3. "Write from the point of view of your shadow": Once again i interpreted this one differently, and made my shadow into a person connected to me.  This one is probably the most emotionally difficult poem that i've written

That'll be a good start.  If you want to see the poems that I wrote to get an example feel free to ask

@Geodegirl I get that, it’s the same for me when I get motivated, definitely hard to stop writing sometimes lol. These seem like good exercises too, and I’d be open to see some of your writing for sure! It may be a while before I start though, I haven’t written for a while, since my last post actually, haven’t been very motivated lately, I’m sure I’ll get back to writing soon, just have to work through some things first….
