...See more Hi. I know I'm about to sound like one of those girls we all hated in school. I apologise in advance. I'm not formally diagnosed as Histrionic, but all of my behaviours indicate the strong possibility of me having the disorder. I find that I have a need for constant attention, and when the focus shifts off of me even just for a second, I go crazy. When I was younger, I would pretend like I was sick or injured when I wasnt receiving the attention I thought I needed, and sometimes I would break things or do something to get in trouble. Now that I'm older, I dont usually go to such drastic measures. Instead I do things like wear provocative outfits or dance/act sexually. Many times when I'm out places and I feel like im not the center of attention, I end up storming out and pouting, or I'll swear that I wont ever return and blame the others for not focusing enough on me. Of course, when I receive the attention i need, the behaviour is quelled and I dont act like a brat. A lot of people have become annoyed with me for these behaviours, and I've lost some friends in the process, but I dont know how to stop myself. Any tips besides therapy? Much appreciated, xx

...See more i wanna start this off by saying that i have not officially been diagnosed with ASPD as i have never seeked out a diagnosis for it . I spent the last couple of years trying to understand my self and my behaviors better and try to get better control of them . Through my reading of psychology and watching countless videos and comparing my experiences to first hand experiences of ASPD i realized my experiences are identical to those being described by people with such a condition. I think there is a very high probability that it is the case that i am a sufferer as well. I use the word suffering because unlike what the media and vast majority of youtube videos like to portray , there is nothing glorious about being a sociopath . Especially not a self aware one. It is a painful discovery when you understand that all your connections with other people are fake since you cant feel any emotions whatsoever towards them. I have hurt many people in my life emotionally and other wise . Looking back at my own life i can see chaous and cycles of self sabotage , hurting others for my own gain , using and discarding people when their use is done , disregard for my own safety and substance and alcohol abuse and so much more. I realized i have no functioning conscience whatsoever , i do not feel any remorse when i hurt another person or for any of the horrible things i have done , however i started to get more and more anxious as i got older , i am now 25 , i do want to be a better person because i understand cognitively that its in my self interest to do so . I have a craving to be understood by other people that i can never fullfill because i dont have any person i can unmask around . Always acting gets extremely tiring. I really want to form some type of emotional bond with people but realized its impossible for me. I can only feel a small range of emotions mostly negative and i am constantly sensation seeking through risky behavior. I am extremely ambitious and obssesed with power and control but i am internally being torn apart by these discoveries about my self and what it all means and how i could fit in this world in a way that is not destructive but dont see a path way for that to happen . I am a person who is already dead and i will likely never have anyone understand me , never to love or to be loved , just a cursed soul and its a difficult pain to explain the extreme loneliness and isolation you feel . People like me are created by pain and we die young and the outer shell that is left of us that inflicts pain in the world is just our childhood traumas playing themselves out . Nothing glorious about it . I wish there was a path for me to heal from this condition

...See more It seems everytime I look up any disorder it fits me to a T. Anyway, this one is basically Cinderella's slipper for me. Anyone who's ever spoken to me in the group chat's here can agree. The only thing on the huge list of symptoms that doesn't fit is "obsessed with physical apparence." At least maybe that I have a suspected diagnosis(besides my 4 others) I can work towards being a better friend. Does anyone have experience with this disorder? Were you diagnoses recently, and how did you cope?

...See more Hello. I am currently seeking individuals like myself, that have either been forthcoming with a professional of their own accord or “caught” and pressured to by someone else. I want to specifically mention that I am and always have been non-violent and have no real desire of physically harming others. With that being said, I believe that I would be found relatively high on the sliding scale of psychopathy. I had a slip up and was “caught” by my current romantic partner who is now strongly pressing me to begin seeing a therapist. I had no out, and agreed to seek out anonymous therapy with a professional specializing in this neck of the ASPD woods with no success. As a result, I am VERY cautiously approaching the idea of traditional therapy without anonymity. I have several concerns that I can’t ignore and would like to know the experience of others like myself.

...See more I’m pretty sure that there’s something wrong with me but I’m not sure what. I don’t feel empathy or many emotions and I only feel any sort of strong emotion towards one person. I am extremely closed off to people no matter how close they are to me. I feel some guilt when I lie but I will lie when it will allow me to get away with something. I have some minor anger issues but most of the time I don’t feel anything. I’m sometimes paranoid, especially in public places, when I’m alone, or when it’s late at night. Every once and a while I have violent thoughts or ideas pop into my head without warning. I have been told by a few quizzes/online tests that I may be a sociopath. Does these traits seem in line with that?

...See more Hey thank you for opening my message. I am not diagnosed with ASPD -- or anything really. I had one encounter with so called 'professionals' in my country. None of the three therapists would come to any conclusion. Not a real surprise since they spent not more than 5 minutes at best talking with me. --, but after years of research I have a strong suspiction that I might have ASPD (possibly with BPD/Schizoid/Bipolar influences). I've got no 'fancy symptoms' to brag about here like a tendency to violence. Yeah, I have them and thankfully I can keep these in control too so far, so I don't consider these to be problematic at all. The emptiness, the sometimes inescapable boredom, an anger stronger than I, and being left alone in a judgemental society that refuses to understand that come with it is the real suffering I think. I am well aware of the stigma around these disorders and their untreatable nature so one half of me feels I'm better off without any official diagnosis. The only thing I want is some understanding maybe. I'm in my 20's and never had a job in my life, failed at multiple schools due to my bad mental state at the time in the past. (note: not that those degrees could get me any job right now, unfortunately.) Now I have no resources (money and energy) to fix anything. Thankfully I have the support of my S.O. to get me some food and basic goods. I feel dearly and infinitely grateful about this, but I still have an existencial dread mixed up with some nihilism almost constantly because this support does not seem to be enough to let us escape this wasteland. My environment had always felt hostile, and now its hostility seems to be multiplying. My neighborhood is hostile. No jobs available for people like me, since I'm not strong physically and have low stress tolerance. The only things I am good at the creative and mental work that are strongly discouraged here. My country is like going from 1st world to 3rd world and like abuse is the norm here in social interactions. Education and healthcare is declining. You literally have to wait half a day to get a bandage changed or you can consider yourself lucky if you get an appointment in the same year to have your vital organ surgery. I feel stuck and crippled in a relatively large city without affording driving licenses or any means of transportation. The air is polluted by uncaring people. In the big markets 95% of food is unhealthy because people here go for the 'cheap' standard -- which isn't actually cheap in the end -- and good plain stuff I like seem to be getting withdrawn. The last day I couldn't get simple things like bar soap and toothpaste that isn't loaded with all those toxic chemicals and had to walk out of the store without buying anything for myself. The grumpiness of people typical to this sh**hole country was just cherry on top when we (S.O. and I) politely asked the staff about the absent products. Like we were the stupid little annoyments how dare we ask them. Seriously I had to stop myself in there from doing damage to the damn store. I missed last night's sleep due to this. People here are hostile and hateful I hear many arguments from the other side of the walls of my apartment regularly. Yelling seems to be a common thing in families, between parents and their children or two adults. Funny enough that a woman regularly yells at her child or children that they should get a damn job. While even stores and factories often ignore or decline applicants. It seems very common here for people to have a lack of compassion. I may have my deficits in my affective empathy but still I can make the choice to act compassionately to make those close to me feel a bit more comfortable in their daily struggles. Since my philosophy tends to be based on the common nature of suffering, meaning that all life forms come with a suffering in a way or another. So I can't say witnessing these does not affect me despite I have nothing to do with their argument, thankfully. I can't help feeling saddened and disgusted by these people. Probably they keep reminding me to my own parents/relatives. So in conclusion I can't seem to do anything better now than trying to find many ways of enjoyment to make every dull day away. I'm only hoping to keep myself at the healthy side with these. Thanks for reading me.

  • Supportive or neutral threads like “How do I support my partner with PD” can remain in their respective forum sections.

  • Discussing personal issues like “My partner has NPD and it’s really difficult to cope with their diagnosis”, communication issues, stigma and other such issues are allowed in their respective forum sections.

 

Please be mindful of how your words may affect people with personality disorders. Avoid using language or labels in a way that is stigmatizing, stereotyping, invalidating, or generalizing. Explained in depth below:


General guidelines to be inclusive:

  • Use people-first language, such as “person with personality disorder” or “individual with personality disorder” 

  • Be ethically responsible and mindful of how your post impacts people with personality disorders.

  • Do not label individuals and don’t use labels in a derogatory way or with a prerogative meaning.

  • Avoid phrases and language that excludes people with personality disorders or place them into an outgroup. Example: “These people with Personality Disorders” or “They who have Personality Disorders”. Please instead use “Those with Personality Disorders” or simply “People with Personality Disorders”


Guidelines to follow when explaining a personality disorder:

People often borrow from psychological texts to explain what they perceive to be a personality disorder. 


Reminder: 

A psychologist or psychiatrist is a trained professional and their activity of segregating types, symptoms, severity of disorders, etc. is conducted from a diagnostic perspective. 


Issue 1.

We are not trained individuals. While we may try to offer helpful information, those descriptions can be disparaging to people with personality disorders.


Issue 2.

Oftentimes when such distinctions are explained by people who do not have lived experience with personality disorders, these distinctions portray people with personality disorders in a negative light.


❌Please do not:

  • Promote labelling individuals, especially based on perceived differences; it is not helpful and only an individual can label themselves. 

  • Cater content towards those who are not people with personality disorders, with an intent to defame, malign or slander people with personality disorders.

  • Promote stereotypical images of what individuals with personality disorders are like. 

  • Promote unhealthy standards of behavior for people with personality disorders.

  • Invalidate the lived experiences of people with personality disorders. 

  • Promote stigmas and prejudices associated with personality disorders. 


✅You can however:

  • Critically represent data or engage in supportive discussions on psychological texts which are from credible sources and catered towards the benefit of people with personality disorders.

  • Raise issues in a supportive way, promote self care, share coping mechanisms, start a conversation or share personal experiences.


Hence when threads conflict with the personal wellbeing or interests or an individual with personality disorders, these posts/threads will be corrected or deleted, under the following guidelines.


  1. Unsupportive content including targeting or attacking other users in the community is not allowed. Disagreements may happen, but always maintain a respectful tone and try to move the conversation forward in an on-topic and constructive way. Sometimes this means agreeing to disagree.   2. In order to maintain a therapeutic space, we delete forum posts that take away from a supportive forum environment. If a forum post is not helpful, nor positive, then it will be deleted. Click here for expanded guideline post 


Guidelines to follow when explaining symptoms of personality disorders:


The line between what is a descriptive symptom and what is stereotypical can be very thin. Hence we are sharing some rules of thumb to explain how you can stray away from generalizations and stay supportive. 


❌Please do not:

  • Describe someone from perceived actions or behavior. 

  • Assume or assert the personal motivations of an individual.

  • Use emotive descriptive words which attribute malicious intent to the experience of a person with personality disorders.


✅You can however: 

  • Highlight the internal experience of the individual.

  • Identify that these symptoms are on a spectrum. 

  • Explain critically the experiences of the individual who has these symptoms from their perspective.

  • Use emotive words which describe how a person with personality disorder feels. 


When a thread does not follow the above guidelines and portrays any symptoms or individuals with personality disorders as abusers or in a negative light, they will be corrected or deleted under the following guideline:


3. Inflammatory, racist, sexist, offensive, homophobic, transphobic, etc. posts are not allowed. Posting about the impacts of abuse, racism, sexism, etc. or seeking support on these topics is allowed. Click here for expanded guideline post

If you believe a forum moderator has edited or deleted your post in error, you can email forum@7cups.com and we will investigate.

Note to Forum Leaders:
Appropriate action: If at all possible, the forum moderator should remove the unsupportive content while retaining the post. All edits should include the forum moderator’s name and the reason for editing (e.g. unsupportive content). In the event that the post cannot be retained, the forum moderator will delete the whole post.

Note to Group Leaders:
These guidelines will be followed in the Personality Disorders Chat Room as well.

  • At first please gently nudge the conversation towards a supportive atmosphere.

  • Gently correct any misconceptions, stereotypes or stigmas.

  • Use your de-escalation skills as per the room supporter training to resolve conflicts if they arise.

  • Gently explain or remind the speaker that their stance although with the best of intentions is not helpful or supportive to people who have personality disorders and this is firstmost a safe space for people with personality disorders.

  • Please share the link of this page when necessary.

  • Call a community moderator on duty if you need support; you can fill in the emergency form available in “Chatroom Guidelines” for the same.

  • If a member still insists on seeking support regarding their issue, please refer them to a one-on-one chat or rooms such as Support Room 24/7.
