need help !! *tw*

ShortyLarge June 3rd, 2020

hi there! i'm posting here seeking some wisdom/recommendations on handling a few different things in regards to my BFRBs, so any replies are appreciated :) i am 16 and have struggled with dermatillomania and other BFRBs (chewing, biting lips/cheeks) for years now. i pick relentlessly at my scalp, shoulders, arms, face, and hands. it's gotten to the point where it hurts to shower, i can't be near a mirror without being triggered to pick, i have scars covering my body, and my scabs are constantly reopening and i find myself getting blood everywhere. all of my bedding has stains, some of my clothes, i get it on papers i'm writing and all sorts of things. my family knows i have a problem, but i don't think they realize it's problem that has a name and one that i need HELP with. they tell me i'm gross, if i'm picking they'll swat at my hands, tell me to stop or to go somewhere else and not do it around them (sometimes i do it without realizing). i dont know how to explain it to them or get them to understand. i am seeing a therapist, though. my other thing is that i am in a relationship with someone else who struggles with BFRBs. my girlfriend has trich and derma, and i'm not sure how we can support each other? any help is appreciated !!

@AlphaPheonix4720 and what does TW mean?

RarelyCharlie June 3rd, 2020

@AlphaPheonix4720 Maybe try a quick Internet search? BFRB

And if that doesn't work, try Urban Dictionary: TW

@ShortyLarge You're seeing a therapist?

It sounds like your therapist isn't really delivering. If you've been having therapy for more than a few weeks without significant improvement, then maybe it's time to talk to your therapist about seeing someone more effective.

And then, when you've found an effective therapist, maybe they will see your girlfriend too. Although sometimes therapists don't like to see two clients who are in a relationship at the same time.
