Music as Self-care

VinylFly May 12th, 2023

Self-care is an important aspect of mental health. There are many different things you can do to take care of yourself and ensure you’re getting what you need and recharging your battery. Music is a form of self-care that many people find beneficial. Whether it be listening to music, making music, or singing along to your favourite song, research has shown that music can create significant positive impacts on psychological and even physical health. Some of the different ways that you can incorporate music into your self-care routine include listening to soothing music to help you fall asleep, listening to upbeat music to help you find the motivation to exercise, learning to play a new musical instrument, expressing your feelings by writing your own song lyrics, and connecting with others by attending an in-person or online music performance. This is not an extensive list by any means as there are so many ways you can use music to increase your well-being.

What are some of your favourite ways of using music as a form of self-care?

Regarding your question:

  • What are some of your favourite ways of using music as a form of self-care?

My very favorite is using music to get ready to go to sleep.

Another favorite is using music to have fun dancing every day.

Listening to my favourite playlist while I drive helps with the anxiety and stress I get when driving. Especially for distances longer the 30 minutes. Being able to sing along helps with the stress.

Music for me, is also used as a distraction, to cover the sounds in the house that my parents make, as I work at my desk. It is with music, that helps me with concentrating on my work. When I feel stressed at work, I also hum my favourite tune.

Love this post, thank you! Often when I meditate, I like to have very ambient music playing, but perhaps even more importantly for self care is using music to calm down if I'm very upset. Stress and worry doesn't touch me as often as it used to, but a couple years ago music and getting into a self care ritual to music is a huge part of what got me out of a really bad time. I also think music is a huge part of my relaxing time whether it's watching a movie, or playing a game where it helps me emotionally connect to a story and the characters :)
