[OLD THREAD] Project Achieve Your Goals - 18+

Laura December 2nd, 2015

Setting goals is the easy part...reaching them can be more challenging!

Having someone support you in reaching your personal goals can be incredibly helpful. Today, wed like to announce a new community program aimed at helping you reach your goals.

Well need both listeners & members to make this happen! Here is how you can get involved in this project:

Members:

Step 1: Post a goal youd like to work towards in this thread. Be specific! Goals work great when you can make them measurable. Usually that involves a time period and a number of times. Additionally, you want to start by making goals achievable. Do not make your goals too hard or you will grow frustrated and not be able to reach them. Much better to make them easy to accomplish to build your confidence right from the start.

examples:

I want to cook dinner for myself 3 nights per week

I want to go to the gym 1 time per week

Take 3 growth path steps every day

Step 2: Specify if you'd like a listener to check in on you 1 or 2x/week.

Step 3: Wait for a listener to reply to you! They will reply and let you know they will support you reach this goal.

Step 4: PM this listener to get going! They will not be able to support you by checking in on you if you do not first PM them. If you find that a listener has not followed up, then please post again and request another listener.

Step 5: Post your progress each week in this thread and also on your feed so more people can support you in achieving your goals.

Step 6: Once you have achieved your goal and the new behavior or habit has been consistent for 21 days, then apply for the Goal 1 Badge. We'll likely have several goals, so there will be Goal 2, Goal 3 etc. (Feel free to help us come up with better names!)

Listeners:

Step 1: Wait for members to share their goals in this thread! When you see a goal/member youd like to support, reply to their forum post and let them know!

Step 2: Once this member has messaged you and established connection over PM, its your job to better understand the members goal, why its important and what you can do to best support them.

Step 3: Make a commitment! Check-in with this member twice per week and enquire about the goal!

Step 4: Let us know how you and your member are doing! In this thread, we will track your progress as team. Post here to let us know how it's going!

Step 5: After your member has reached their goal, let us know and apply for the Coach badge. More details on this soon!

My main motivation has to be to start doing something with my lfe, something that I feel is meaningful because I feel so empty inside all the time and I want to learn to care about others, about myself, about life... something like this. Hope it makes sense.

Hello @thewintershadow - sorry you feel so empty inside. That is something that can color all of life. What you say does make sense. Some people find that a 1-1 chat is a place that helps sort out these things in our life that are so challenging. You can wait in the queue for any listener or send me a message.

My goal is to work hard everyday from Monday to Saturday, I will wake up early and find new recipes to sell, I will not let depression or social anxiety stop me and I would love if someone would help me out to keep going. My mood is good right now but very often it just plumbers or I get too anxious and sabotage myself...

I am a young adult with a very bad habit of eating too much. No matter how much I say that my body is a gift, I fail to

respect it and eat too much of unnecessary food items. I need someone to help me manage my diet and help me work out so that I can

become better in both health and external appearance.

I just now read about how all this works, so I'm posting here and will close out the other thread.

My goal: Wake up at 7AM and check in at 8:30 to say I'm starting work. - 4x/week frequency

I would like a Listener to support me with this. A 2x/wk check-in would be great.

This seems like it might be an ok forum for daily accountability with my organization goals. My days have very little external structure, but I have lots of work to do, and ADHD. When I go a whole day, like today, and never focus down on anything, I feel like such a miserable loser. I want to avoid that.

.

Thanks! I'm new to 7 cups, and look forward to trying out the different things :-D

12/29 - I got up late, but I'm preppy my work plan just a little after 8:30. Excited about this start, and about the accountability!

@sageclaire

12/30 - so the therapist I've been working on suggested that a strict approach to sleep might not be good for other parts of my mental health. I'm adjusting the goal some: I'm letting myself have my normal sleep schedule (2-9:30), but holding myself accountable to get up, do my meditation, dress, and start work in the first 90 minutes (so by 11AM). That's worked for me today, and with very little strain, though I had to shut myself out of Facebook to do it. :-P

Again, a listener for this would be fantastic for my journey!

@sageclaire. I would like to support you in your goals. Depending on your time-zone I would be available to check-in with you when you get up and then at starting work 6 days per week. I admire your goal to straighten up your sleep. I think it helps in many areas. I would be able to have two standing weekly check-in appointments per week to help you as you pursue your goal. Message me if you want my help.

To go to the gym at least twice a week. Before Saturday, I didn't go for two weeks! I'm starting to make excuses when I shouldn't. I've somehow lost weight though, I have no idea how. I guess I need that push to keep going. I want to go as often as I can.

My goal: have sex this week without having a panic attack and freaking out. Enjoying it would be more than fantastic.

soulsings December 30th, 2015

Hi @nenemi - that is something that is more likely experienced in a trusted relationship with someone that is sensitive to your need for sensitivity and intimacy in a relationship. A partner who will spend 15-30 minutes embracing and connecting on an emotional and essential way could improve your chances of success. Someone that is willing to stop when you reach the limits of your comfort zone would be helpful also.

Some people can work through things on a physical level. Others find they need to heal the deep emotional wounds they have endured in life before they find a normal relationship emerging. It is not you that is the problem. The body is programmed to "fight or flight" responses which are triggered whenever we feel threatened by an experience that resembles ones we had before where we felt we were vulnerable or at risk.

Look at the self help guides that feel they may apply and take some time. Your goal is worthy but the time to accomplishment might mean waiting and working on yourself longer. http://www.7cups.com/supportGuides/selfHelpGuides.php

@soulsings Hey, thanks for answering. I am just going through the support guides you posted. I do have a very supporting partner and a relationship full of trust - everything is in my pace that's for sure. I just happen to have a history of rape and sexual abuse in the past which makes it a bit complicated - that's why my goal is simply normal sex. I feel that it could change a lot.

soulsings December 30th, 2015

Oh no @nenemi - so sorry you have suffered through so much. No one should have to go through that. But you are a survivor of abuse!

Seeing that you have had such difficult challenges, the following guides may be ones you would find relevant.

http://www.7cups.com/domestic-assault-survivor/

http://www.7cups.com/traumatic-experience-help/

The therapy option is a personal choice but many survivors of abuse find that having a therapist trained specifically in helping survivors of abuse come to terms with their tragic past can be a great help. Someone trained in PTSD could also be a help.

If you want to keep me updated on how those self help guides work send me a private message to http://www.7cups.com/@soulsings

Ooooooh! I'm a grad student working on my masters thesis, but last year I wrote my undergrad thesis. I'd be happy to check in with you, I'd love to talk about your topic! Personally I'm researching history, but I love academia in general and would be happy to talk about any subject (although can't say I'm good at math at ALL). Feel free to PM me! And best of luck, deadlines are crazy tough to meet and sometimes I think profs think all you do is work on one project all day every day.

My goal is to let go of any and every emotional tie to the past that causes me to self destruct. I will listen to binaural beats, subliminals, and positive affirmations until I can think without self sabotage. My second goal is to no longer live in fear of the unknown, but to embrace it. I have allowed fear to cheat me out of a happy, peaceful life up to this point, and am no longer willing to give in to this emotion.
