[OLD THREAD] Project Achieve Your Goals - 18+

Laura December 2nd, 2015

Setting goals is the easy part...reaching them can be more challenging!

Having someone support you in reaching your personal goals can be incredibly helpful. Today, wed like to announce a new community program aimed at helping you reach your goals.

Well need both listeners & members to make this happen! Here is how you can get involved in this project:

Members:

Step 1: Post a goal youd like to work towards in this thread. Be specific! Goals work great when you can make them measurable. Usually that involves a time period and a number of times. Additionally, you want to start by making goals achievable. Do not make your goals too hard or you will grow frustrated and not be able to reach them. Much better to make them easy to accomplish to build your confidence right from the start.

examples:

I want to cook dinner for myself 3 nights per week

I want to go to the gym 1 time per week

Take 3 growth path steps every day

Step 2: Specify if you'd like a listener to check in on you 1 or 2x/week.

Step 3: Wait for a listener to reply to you! They will reply and let you know they will support you reach this goal.

Step 4: PM this listener to get going! They will not be able to support you by checking in on you if you do not first PM them. If you find that a listener has not followed up, then please post again and request another listener.

Step 5: Post your progress each week in this thread and also on your feed so more people can support you in achieving your goals.

Step 6: Once you have achieved your goal and the new behavior or habit has been consistent for 21 days, then apply for the Goal 1 Badge. We'll likely have several goals, so there will be Goal 2, Goal 3 etc. (Feel free to help us come up with better names!)

Listeners:

Step 1: Wait for members to share their goals in this thread! When you see a goal/member youd like to support, reply to their forum post and let them know!

Step 2: Once this member has messaged you and established connection over PM, its your job to better understand the members goal, why its important and what you can do to best support them.

Step 3: Make a commitment! Check-in with this member twice per week and enquire about the goal!

Step 4: Let us know how you and your member are doing! In this thread, we will track your progress as team. Post here to let us know how it's going!

Step 5: After your member has reached their goal, let us know and apply for the Coach badge. More details on this soon!

Hi @bubbleLake078 - regular exercise is good for the body and the mind. Having a plan and sticking to it can really help. Here is a self help guide on exercise motivation that I found very helpful.

@bubbleLake078 Well though goal! Your goal sounds doable and measurable. How do you act when you are not being consistent?

@AlanRY Hey, thanks. If my body refuses completely - I listen, but in all other times - its better to start - and once started - you just can feel so much better after exercise. I started doing Yoga at home. Thanks to @soulsings who recommended wonderful yoga with adrienne (youtube). Everytime after exercise I feel more energetic - so I remember this feeling and it keeps me going when I feel lazy or sleepy.

Hi @itsnina101 - I know what you mean about over achieving. It often starts with extremely high expectations that can leave someone feeling melancholy with lower self esteem if they are not reached.

I am glad to have a 1-1 chat or exchange messages as it will help you. Send me a message to

@itsnina101 hey there..what makes you do that? sense of restlessness? maybe detaching yourself from everything buzzing in your head can help...just be there for a moment without thinking about what you have to do...you dont have to do anything...really...it is your mind and habit so ingrained guide your thinking...but if you remain calm inside and just try tp feel warm inside, happy, like at home, where you completed all and dont need to go anywhere.

I'm a senior at high school and my goal is to succeed my final exams so i can study medicine. I used to be first in my class but this semester was really bad. I also have social anxiety; i can't participate in class or talk in front of a group, or walk in a crowded place. i'd feel overwhelmed and self conscious.

I can't imagine myself studying anything but medicine and i'm really worried i don't pass. i'd be grateful if there's a listener out there who can help me through it and check on me about twice a week.

Hi @sara101 - I understand how there can be road bumps in life and how things don't always turn out the way they hoped for. I have experienced social anxiety also and know how uncomfortable that can be.

I am glad you have such a strong idea of what you want to do. I am happy to keep in communication to help motivate and remind you of the importance of studying. If interested, send me a message

Hope it is a good weekend.

I have two goals on my mind currently.

The first one is the most important to me, as this seemed to be the most helping in the past. I'd like to strengthen the bond to my mom. I didn't talk much to my parents the years I lived with them, not to mention even opening up to them even a little bit. I started to change this recently. But I need to continue down this path. My dad died before I even got the chance to change anything in our relationship. If I make this mistake twice, I don't know what consequences that would have for me. My goal is to at least text my mom on a daily basis. I want to know how she feels and want her to know how I am feeling. This might seem pretty basic, too simple to mention or even stupid to an outsider. But to me, talking to her or even talking to her about emotions is very hard for me. My mom is of utmost importance to me, and I want her to know it.

My second goal is to fight my social anxiety. I don't know if its real social anxiety, I just presume it is. I have a very hard time going shopping. When I am in a crowded place like a supermarket on a busy day, I have a hard time controlling myself not to flee outside and just drive home. Every time someone is violating my comfort zone, I am getting angry and very anxious. My insides are cramping and I feel like someone just hit me in my stomach. I have to learn to at least cope with this so I can pursue my weekly shopping trips without feeling like I just had a 100 mile marathon afterwards.

I'd very much like to have a listener help me with one of these goals. Its too easy to just lock yourself inside your house and not see anyone.

I'm still trying to figure it out my goals. sad

Risetorebellion December 20th, 2015

You are not alone in that! I constantly hear recommendations from others to set small goals and acheive them, but i struggle to honestly identify any goals, let alone recognize achievable ones vs long term ones.

Sometimes i start by retroactively identifying my goals, such as looking back at something I've done or accomplished and saying, hey, that was good! I'd like to make that happen again!

Sometimes I have to set really ridiculously easy goals too, like tonight I'd like to only brush my teeth once and not eat anything afterwards so i don't have go rebrush.

Hi. I have depression and finally realized I need to make a few positive changes for myself. I've lost motivation and interest in my college studies at the moment with my first semester of this year finishing terribly. I would like to get my sleeping schedule back to normal as I have a tendency to oversleep. I'd also like to eat healthier as I've neglected eating even enough for a while now. I'd also like to keep up with my school work and to try to get my motivation up somehow so I can enjoy what I once loved. Thanks for listening xx

My goal are to not let my mental illnesses get in the way of my other life goals:

-work for a non profit helping youth build their own leadership development journeys

-go backpacking through Eastern Europe and through the balkans (more travel after that)

-learn a 4th language

-build a tiny house

my illnesses have put a stand still on my entire life including these goals, school, work, hobbies, and many more. I want nothing more than for me to not be crippled by them, and I've had to put all of my energy into not letting it, leaving little to no energy left over. But things are going to change. I need them to and I'm going to make them.
