Mindfulness and grounding skills

pamharley003 October 28th

Check In for October 28th to October 30th 2024

Grounding helps us control the symptoms by turning away from thoughts, worry and worries and keep us in the present state of mind. Has anyone heard of the 5,4,3,2,1 exercise? I honestly have not and will explain what it is and to also give an image to help better understand it.

This is a powerful exercise when we need it. A mindfulness exercise helps us to come out of things and to ground ourselves to be calmer.  The exercise is for us to:

  • 5 things you can see
  • 4 things you can feel
  • 3 things you can hear
  • 2 things you can smell
  • 1 thing you can taste

These grounding exercises are both mentally and emotionally helping us for situations that make us uncomfortable.  The following image explains grounding better:

Which of the examples above would you try?

What is an exercise you use when needing to ground yourself back to the present time?

Grounding I think is very important to all of us. I feel without it we will not be able to correct things happening in our lives and move on peacefully.

When I can remember the skills during extreme stress, I tend to do the 54321 skill and deep breathing.

Thank you Mango, My position is to not just teach myself but something I read in an email or magazine may help everyone in this Community. I feel helping others gives me the happiness to know I can maybe educate others that maybe afraid to speak out on things,
