Hello everyone,
Welcome back to the second discussion of the course!
John C Maxwell defines leadership as, a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.
Effective Leadership starts with utilizing skills to guide your team. There are different research and studies that show that to be a good leader, one would require a blend of some key skills like communication, problem-solving, decision making, conflict resolution, clear vision, integrity, emotional intelligence, listening, empathy, adaptability, resilience, etc.
Behavioral Theories believe that people can become leaders through the process of teaching, learning, and observation. Leadership is a set of skills that can be learned by training, perception, practice, and experience over time. Leadership learning is a lifetime activity.
Everyone holds his fortune in his own hands, like a sculptor the raw material he will fashion into a figure. But it is the same with that type of artistic activity as with all others: we are merely born with the capability to do it. The skill to mold the material into what we want must be learned and attentively cultivated. -- J.W.V. Goethe
The same is true with leadership. You may or may not have all the required ingredients of becoming an effective leader. And, thats totally okay. You can acquire them by learning. Taking small steps every day. That is how one learns, practices, and masters skills.
Next step, below in the comments of this discussion, share
1. Are leaders born or made?
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
4. Please reply to 3 of your peers in the thread!
After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

@Heather225
I think leaders are made. They acquire new skills throughout their lives and learn how to be effective leaders.
3 skills I need to works on are not doubting my own capabilities, being better at giving criticism, and standing up for myself
As a leader, I would talk to all parties involved in the conflict individually to figure out the source of the problem. Then we would work together to come to a mutual conclusion.
@Readylistener
Your answers are so accurate and concise! 100% agreed
@Readylistener
Individually figuring out the source of the problem sounds like a great place to start!
@Readylistener good answer !
@Readylistener
Yes. Having courage and self-confidence is necessary for effective leadership.
@Readylistener
That's a great insight to invite everyone to participate in a conflict resolution.
1. Are leaders born or made?
Although people may be born with certain leadership qualities and as such, it could be said that leaders are born – however, I would largely agree that leaders are made, because it is ultimately a life learning process in which leaders have to be consistent in developing and refining themselves.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
1. Communication i.e. to ensure that I make things clear and concise.
2. Emotional intelligence i.e. to improve on my patience and temper.
3. Time management i.e. to ensure that I remember when to take a break.
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
In such a situation, I would first call for an emergency meeting to ask for each of the team member’s opinions as well as their feedback and most importantly, to specifically identify the conflict among them. Once that’s covered, I will make a proposal as to how that conflict can be resolved and if there are disagreements to the proposal, we can collectively brainstorm ideas on how to make it better for the team. However, I will be the one to make the last call as the project lead, to ensure fairness for all.
4. Please reply to 3 of your peers in the thread!
Done!
@Cristen
The emergency meeting sounds like a good idea! It's also awesome how you'd try and find a solution that is better for the team as a whole
@Cristen
Great answer and I really appreciate the reflecion that was done on the skills to be improved
@Cristen "Emotional intelligence to improve on patience and temper," sounds very good.
@Cristen patience is a relateable one! I am learning, too!
@Cristen, I also briefly mentioned about how we are born with certain qualities. We are all born with genes and sometimes one gene is more pronounced than usual. In my case, when I was a kid, it wasn't evident I'd ever be a leader. Through my life experiences though and other things I have now been put in charge of 4 employees and take on manager duties.
@Cristen
1. Are leaders born or made?
Ans: Leaders are made. It’s a skill for which there’s always more to learn. As mentioned in the thread, in order to be a good leader, one must have a combination of vital skills. All these can be learnt from observing others and applying them practically. Hence, I stand by the statement that leaders are made, not born. We may or may not already possess certain qualities, but that doesn’t define the kind of leader we are capable of molding ourselves into in the future.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
Ans: 3 skills that I need to work on are: Decision-making, conflict resolution and adaptability.
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
Ans: As a leader, I will first listen to all sides of the argument. This will allow me to try and find some common ground amongst my members. Next I’ll explain why each member was assigned with their respective responsibility. This will allow my team members to view the situation from a clear perspective. By the end, hopefully, we will have arrived to a solution of responsibility sharing that suits everyone.
@cuteeeezombieeee Active listening to individual members and looking for common ground sounds good.
@cuteeeezombieeee
I like how you mention applying skills practically
1. Leaders are definitely made. You in your life, learn different skills and lessons that helps you become a great leader. 2. Three skills that I need to work upon: (a) Decision making - I'm pretty slow at Decision making. Also, when decisions are to be taking on urgent matters, I'm pretty slow as I analyse everything in detail. (b) Communication - I end up having pretty good ideas at times that will help the team to grow and also the organisation to grow. But unfortunately, I'm not able to put such ideas properly on table for everyone and there's always miscommunication at times like this. (c) Failure fear - I'm scared of failing myself and my team members failing because of me. I need to let go of that fear as every failure teaches you something. 3. If I'm a project leader and a conflict arises among my team members regarding the responsibilities share, I'll call for a meeting. Ask everyone's opinion. And help them in such a way that they themselves come to a middle ground and understand the responsibility and share it among themselves. I'll just be a medium through with they can decide that.
@Heather225
1. Are leaders born or made?
Leaders are definitely made. A good leadership includes characteristics that stem from development, maturity, consistency, precision and experiences. These play a pivotal role in shaping a leader and these characteristics are earned through time and experience, not fast paced and immediate.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
3 skills that I need to work upon would be precision, consistency, and emotions. These three skills according to me will help me in my journey of being a successful leader.
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
I would first call my team members in for a discussion and listen to the details of the conflict. I will ask each member for their opinions and thoughts on the conflict. Reflection is a key component of success and that's something that I will work on at times of conflict. After hearing their opinions, I will ask them to reflect on it and guide them in finding out the core issue that caused the conflict. I would ask my members an honest opinion if they are willing to switch and swap tasks given to them if that would solve the issue.
@giggleZebra2708
Very well explained answer. I agree with you and moreover yeh reflection is really important😊
@Heather225
Made
As we all have some or other leader quality but very few use it and work on it to be great leader in real life.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
More socialise, keep update with new changes and explore myself more rather limited to few tasks.
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
As leader I would be neutral person and will make both person comfort so they can share what happened and I will listen both side of story.
Keeping in mind the goal is to make both party be at peace so acknowing the emotions they are feeling and get into calm state.
So they get into listening term if they need space to cool down alone than will give that space.
Reminding them the importance of them in term and their good quality that had made team work so well.
Through negotiation and if need to correct something I would be polite enough to put that point to the person (listening mode the person would be).
Also, remind the goal all team share. That would make them look bigger picture and work together. Accepting the difference they have as individual.
@blindHeart12
Love your answers. Especially the last one. Neutrality is really necessary in the leadership to make people feel equal❤
I think that leaders are made, though people may naturally have characteristics conducive to leadership, these qualities can be improved on or aquired.
I can work on being more aware of my environment, asking everyone for there opinion, and asking for help when I need it.
I would hold a meeting with those involved in the conflict. I would let everyone share there side, then share my vision of how things were supposed to be split up and see if everyone agreed. If not, we would design a new plan to share the responsibility to try to keep everyone satisfied.
Hello Everyone!
1. Are leaders born or made?
It's possible that it's both. In any case, we'll have to keep improving our skills and abilities to become the best version of ourselves.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
Delegation, Patience, Boundaries
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
I'd first encourage them to practice conflict resolution amongst themselves, and I'd also set up a meeting with them to hear their perspectives and discuss responsibilities. In the end, I'll try to find a common ground taking a collaborative approach so that we can continue to work together as a team.
Thank You!
Be the change that you wish to see in the world.
@SuryanshSingh
Are leaders born or made?
There is a sleeping leader in each of us, which can be made to wake up, through understanding and practising leadership skills.
Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
Problem-solving - I need to work together with the team to work way towards solutions.
Emotional intelligence- I need to use my emotional intelligence further to regard the feelings and spirits of individuals in the team, to enable the best out of them shine through.
Adaptability - I need to adapt and bring changes in my approach for the sake of the cause (which is much bigger than any one individual).
Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
"A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." So, I will take a pause there to re-communicate to myself about the right way, then I will practise the associated values, and finally I will communicate to my team the purpose and vision which I carry in my spirit. With this reminder, spirits would be uplifted and then we can work to re-discuss responsibilities.
@Fristo I love the way you explained your thoughts on whether leaders are born or made!
@Heather225
1. Are leaders born or made?
I think there is a leader hidden among all of us, somewhere deep down. We all have the abilities if we try hard enough. For some, its easier as they already have some of them, for some its much harder. In the end, it all comes down to the amount of effort you put in yourself. I feel like leaders are neither born nor made, they are rather discovered by an individual in themselves.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
Patience, i am a result-oriented person, and i find it hard to accept fruitless struggles
Problem solving, I find it hard to create step by step patterns to solve a problem.
Adaptibility, i always try to seek my own comfort zone and work within it. I need to learn adjusting to a new environment
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
I will step out and share the workload with them, to show that teamwork is the key to success. I will share the responsibility among everyone equally, including myself.
@DigitalKnight
I love the answer for the first question and the rest of em but particularly that first one. Well done knightie
@DigitalKnight
I agree with you. There is definitely hidden leader in everyone we just need to work on it ❤
Hi @DigitalKnight! Your responses are really well written. I love how you brought up the concept of a hidden leader within us. I’ve never really thought about it that way.
