There is a lot to unpack in Chapter 2 and 3. Denial and distraction keep us unaware and stuck in patterns that are not particularly good for us as individuals or communities. In this discussion and others, I'm mostly interested in what you think and the type of ideas that we collectively surface as a group. And a quick note that there are no bad or wrong answers here - the important thing is to share ideas and learn together. ÃÂ
Please read chapters 2 and 3 and then answer the following questions:
1. How would you define denial in your own words? ÃÂ
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Please add the following message to the button of all discussion posts
After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.

1. How would you define denial in your own words?
not accepting or ignoring or avoiding the truth
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
Things that occur outside our awareness are things that could be a learned behavior.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Social media, Internet, Our thoughts.
I think internet would be considered as the powerful distraction by most of the people as there are lot to explore and learn within it
@DreamTouch
Great ideas, concise notes. Fantastic work overall 💖
1. How would you define denial in your own words?
For me denial is convincing yourself of a fact you wish to be true but isn't, a way to put off processing the truth
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
the unconscious gives us this sense of familiarity and that is why people tend to stick with it, also it can be a learnt behavour, that interested me a lot
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
1) food- either eating too much and making you feel guilting for over indulging or not having enough and this making you feel faint and unable to focus
2) social media- as a teenage girl I speak as someone with a lot of experience with procrastinating my school work but saying just 5 more minutes of mindlessly scrolling
3) school- more specifically homework as the though of it causes you to procrastinate, which means you end up doing it late which means you dont sleep as well which means you are sleepy and therefore distracted in class
@GlenM
How would you define denial in your own words?
I would define denial of something we do as a way to protect ourselves from pain, often like how our bodies will disassociate to protect our mind and heart. It is neither good, nor bad, it is what humans naturally do when needed. However, when denial negatively impacts our lives it is something we personally need to look at and explore. It is like drinking alcohol is not necessarily bad, it is when it starts impacting our lives negatively and those around us.
What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
I learned that things that was a conscious task to us at one time, are now in our unconsciousness such as everyday tasks that we do without thought. Our body also does things unconsciously also to protect us.
What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
I believe social media, gaming, and online would be the top 3 distractions. I think that…it is a struggle to pick between the three. I may lean to social media…I will stick with social media for now. I think it is easy to access social media anywhere. Everywhere we go there it is, we get alerts, there are articles about how our self-esteem is based on the number of hearts, and likes we get after posting. We are constantly comparing ourselves to others so much. Hours and hours can be spent on social media sites, most people have more than one or two sites and are on them several times throughout the day.

1. How would you define denial in your own words?
Denial for me is trying hard to accept the truth but acting consciously delusional about it.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
The environment for me is an important factor. Subconsciously or consciously we always tend to derive energy from our surroundings is it good or bad. Most of our minds being in the state of seeking approval always tries to act in accordance with society. So it's important that society as a whole provides a conducive zone for an individual to grow and flourish and contribute towards well being of society.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
3 Distraction systems for me are Complacency, Desires, Constant urge to seek approval from people. Complacency breeds comfort space. Nothing great comes from comfort space. Constant desires to keep you from the real issues at hand. You end up feeling good for a limited time and this cycle keeps going on. For me, the desire to please people is the most powerful because it can make you feel and see less of yourself.

Denial is the refusal to accept reality and is comforting in a way since it also helps to get through a certain point.
The unconscious part is the part beneat the water of the iceberg. This part acts automatically so whatever thoughts are fed to the mind and whatever habit that is enacted becomes natural and the conscious focuses on other tasks. So be careful what becomes natural to avoid suffocating your ownself.
Food
Online distraction- social media
Accomplishments
The most powerful would be online distractions like social media. Many people around the world are addicted to sites like instagram, twitter and even youtube. These mediums get people's attention and keeps them addicted to getting more information or sending information that isnt as fulfilling as other things. Also, this aids in denial where people temporarily forget about their reality and watch others to get a sense of relief.
@Dazzle28purvi I also agree about comforting part of denial, when it is not about accepting reality but holding off from it for a time.
@GlenM
How would you define denial in your own words?
Denial occurs when someone is unable to accept some unpleasant event that they encounter in life.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
The unconscious mind influences our behavior even when we are unaware of its underlying influences.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most popular and why?
I believe that money, social media, and food are the top distracting systems. Out of these 3, I feel that social media is highly habit-forming which causes people to stay glued to it no matter how unhealthy it may be. It is so addictive that although people are well-educated about its ill-effects they still choose to spend their precious time doing nothing but only scrolling & checking the newsfeed - wasting time.
@lyricalAngel70
Great answers ! ❤
Agreed, social media can lead to a habit formation, which then turns to addiction , and mindless scrolling and checking the feed .
@Sunisshiningandsoareyou
Thank you so much, it's always great to hear from you ❤💜

I agree that social media can be really harmful too since people waste most of their time there!
@herealways27
I agree with you. That's why I feel we must take breaks often from social media accounts. Like how we have self-care breaks here on 7 Cups. I believe that any social networking site could lead to burnout if used excessively.
1. How would you define denial in your own words? Denial is when you don't want to face reality
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
fears that operate outside of awareness will still affect behavior and actions.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
7 cups, discord, and the local news on coronavirus rates. For me, the third is the most negative, but 7 cups is the most powerful because it has the ability to reach into all aspects of our lives, not just the coronavirus rates.
1. How would you define denial in your own words?
Denial is a feeling or behaviour of non acceptance of things.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
Things that are always present within or surrounding us. Being conscious about it can help us be aware about them.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Top distraction systems are : Social Media, Video games, Studies. I feel social media is the most powerful as we live in a mordent age and almost everyone has a smart phone and we often engage in social media or anything on internet. We send hours on it and feel like its seconds forgetting things that actually hold value to us.
1 I think denial is refusing to accept the Reality of what is going on and stuff that you do not like. About your self. It is a form of a protection net to keep you from being hurt.
2 over time it become so automatic in the way you think . It moves from something you are aware of to something that you become not aware any more.
3 alcohol/ drugs I think people use these to stop the pain and they can become dangerous and leads to life one Chaos and Heath problems. I think this one is most powerful in a bad way.
socail meda It can cause people to be come overpended on it and brings it own set of problems.
food it can lead to Heath problems can can be prevented.
@GlenM
1. How would you define denial in your own words?
The refusal to accept something, usually in a manner that it protective towards oneself, or meant to be. This doesn't mean however, that it truly is what's best for ourselves.
2. What is the most important thing you learned about things that operate outside of awareness or the unconscious?
That they can be learnt behaviours. I hadn't thought about this idea previously which I think is interesting as it very much makes sense, and yet, it hadn't crossed my mind.
3. What do you believe are the top 3 distraction systems? Which one of these is the most powerful and why?
Smartphones, work/productivity, people-pleasing.
I think that smartphones are the most immediately distracting and they distract us from things that are necessary like work and the like — in that way I think they're the most powerful. However, I also think that the obsession we (society, not us personally) have with work and constant productivity is a distraction from really, genuinely taking care of ourselves and of others — in that way, I think this concept is the most powerful.
@GlitteringNights
Perfect! all are very spot-on ♡ specially about smartphone, couldn't agree more - 🍀
